                         ---------------------------------

                           STAR TREK UNIVERSE TIMELINE

                        ---------------------------------

MAIN TIMELINE

AD 1968       On Terra, a high-level assasination, coupled with a major

government coup in Asia, broadens the scope and magnifies the

intensity of the brush wars on the Asian continent.

                (APLW\tos), (AE\tos), (EAF\tng)

AD 1968       On Terra, the United States prepares to launch a sub-orbital

nuclear platform in response to a similar launch by other

nations.  The near holocaust caused by a malfunction of the

platform's guidance system during launch, results in the

negotiation of a new treaty banning the deployment of orbital

nuclear weapons.  Unfortunately, the treaty is later violated

by a number of the signatary nations.

                (TDM\tos), (AE\tos), (TVH\tff)

AD 1969       On Terra, the United States launches the first manned

expedition to its nearest neighbor, Luna.  The stunning success

of the Apollo mission, coupled with the promise of numerous

practical and profitable benefits from the exploration of

space, leads to an aggressive surge in the development and

utilization of space-related technologies by the United States

                and other nations.

                (TIY\tos), (RTT\tos)

@ AD 1970       In the Andromeda galaxy, scientists of the Kelvan Empire

discover that increasing radiation levels will destroy all life

in that galaxy within ten millenia.  The Kelvans send out

multi-generation exploration ships to survey other galaxies in

                preparation for conquest and colonization.

                (BAON\tos)

@ AD 1970       On Terra, Canadian agricultural researchers successfully

synthesize triticale; a resilient high yeild grain developed

from a hybrid strain of wheat and rye.  The introduction of

triticale is a significant step in the struggle to provide

sufficient food to feed Terra's exploding population.

                (TTWT\tos), (MTMT\tas)

@ AD 1970       On Terra, US President Richard Milhouse Nixon undertakes an

unpreceedented diplomatic mission to improve American relations

with the Peoples Republic of China.

                (TUC\tff)

AD 1972       On Terra, the United States launches the space probe Pioneer 10

to explore the system's outer planets.

                (TFF\tff)

AD 1974       On Terra, the unsolved stabbing-deaths of five women cast a

shadow of fear over the city of Kiev in the USSR.

                (WITF\tos)

AD 1974       On Terra, US President Richard Milhouse Nixon vacates his

office in the wake of the Watergate scandel.

                (QL\ds9)

AD 1976-77    On Terra, the United States forges ahead with its space program

by unveiling the Enterprise; the proto-type for its re-usable

space shuttle program.  The US also launches the Voyager probe

series to explore the outer solar system.  Years later, Voyager

VI disappears into a spatial anomaly beyond the edge of the Sol

                system.

                (TMP\tff)

AD 1983       Pioneer 10 becomes Terra's first unmanned spacecraft to journey

out of the Sol system.  Decades later the probe disappears into

                a spatial anomaly.

                (TFF\tff)

@ AD 1984       Birth of American astronaut Sean Jeffery Christopher on Terra.

                (TIY\tos)

@ AD 1987       On Terra, nuclear disarmerment talks between the United States

and other nations begin to flounder.

                (TDM\tos), (AE\tos), (TVH\tff)

@ AD 1990       On Terra, the proliferating chryonics industry turns to the use

of solar-powered orbital space capsules to solve the increasing

problems inherent in ground-based storage facilities:

Particularly the problem of power failures.

                (TNZ\tng)

@ AD 1990       On Terra, the first re-usable commercial spacecraft is

unveiled.  The DY-100 class vessal is capable of interplanetary

voyages.  It features advanced fission-powered propulsion and

employs chryogenic suspension technology derived from chryonics

to preserve crew members for extended journeys.

                (SS\tos), (TUC\tos), (TWOK\tff), (TVH\tff), (TNZ\tng),

                (UTLL\tng)

AD 1992       On Terra, the historical biography _Chicago Mobs of the

                Twenties_ is first published.

                (APOTA\tos)

AD 1992-96    THE TERRAN EUGENICS WARS: In the wake of wide-spread horror

stories concerning the secret development of biological

weapons, the majority of Terra's population succumbs to blind

panic when the existence of a growing group of genetically

engineered "super-humans" is publicized.  Utilizing their

superior physical and mental abilities, the "super-humans" and

their supporters take advantage of the mass confusion caused by

the wave of global hysteria to seize power simultaneously in

over forty nations.  The "super-humans" are eventually overcome

by their own superior ambition: Internal strife and conflict

amoung various "super-human" factions provides sufficient

opportunity for their overthrow by pro-liberation forces.

With the defeat of Khan Noonian Singh and his followers in

southern Asia, most of the remaining "super-humans"

disappear: Presumably hunted down by radical purist elements.

Remarkably, neither nuclear weapons or the recently developed

biological viruses are employed during the struggle.  Despite

the disuse of these nightmare weapons, war casualties exceed

                thirty-seven million.

                (SS\tos), (BAC\tos), (TIV\tas), (TOG\tos), (TWOK\tff),

                (AMOT\tng)

AD 1996       On Canopus III, the acclaimed romance poet Tharbold composes

his greatest love sonnet _Nightengale Woman_.

                (WNMHGB\tos), (A\tos), (TEOTB\tas)

@ AD 2000       On Terra, the old United Nations is reorganized and

re-chartered.  The New-UN gradually widens the scope and

breadth of its influence; assuming a strong leadership role in

matters of global policy.  In an effort to encourage

cooperation among various national space agencies, the New-UN

establishes InterSat code as the standard communications

protocol to be used by all Terran space probes and manned

                explorations.

                (WNMHGB\tos), (SS\tos), (TC\tos), (TTI\tas), (EAF\tng),

                (UTLL\tng)

@ AD 2000       Dr. Stavos Keniclius; a maverick Terran geneticist, publishes a

series of scientific articles and political essays postulating

the feasability and practicality of selective cloaning as a

means of advancig human civilization.  Residual hysteria from

the recent Eugenics Wars causes strong public reaction.

Keniclius' work is denounced by fearful colleagues, and

unofficially banned from publication.  Keniclius himself goes

                into hiding and disappears entirely.

                (SS\tos), (TIV\tas), (TWOK\tff), (AMOT\tng)

AD 2002       Nomad; Terra's first interstellar probe designed to seek out

and identify extra-solar lifeforms, is dispatched from the Sol

                system.  The probe's principal designer Dr. Jackson Roykirk;

arguably the most brilliant though erratic Terran scientist of

the early 21rst century, seeks to create the first electronic

intelligence system capable of independent logic and action.

After leaving the Sol system, he Nomad proto-type suffers a

meteor collision and is presumed destroyed when data

transmissions cease.  No further nodels of the probe are

                planned.

                (TC\tos)

AD 2018       The first successful tests of a Terran spacecraft equipped with

a fusion-powered Impulse drive system opens the way for rapid

expansion into the solar system.  The necessity of sleeper-

ships for interplanetary voyages is entirely eliminated by the

near-relativistic speeds made possible by Impulse drive.  Under

the auspicies of the New-UN, a multi-national effort is

undertaken to colonize Mars and utilize its natural resources,

as well as to explore the outer planets of the solar system.

                (WNMHGB\tos), (Cm\tos), (TIY\tos), (SS\tos), (WITF\tos),

                (TDM\tos), (EOT\tos), (RTT\tos), (SB\tos), (EAF\tng), (TR\tng),

                (TSS\tng), (UTLL\tng), (Rel\tng)

@ AD 2020       Terra's first manned expedition to explore Saturn's moons is

successful.  Colonel Sean Jeffery Christopher is the first

Terran to set foot on Titan.

                (SS\tos), (TIY\tos), (SB\tos), (TR\tng)

AD 2024       THE IRISH UNIFICATION: On Terra, Great Britan accedes to the

pressure of decades of terrorist rebellion, and negotiates the

cecession of its Northern Irish counties to the Republic of

                Ireland.

                (THG\tng)

@ AD 2025       By the end of the first quarter of the 21rst century, Terra's

population of humpback whales is hunted to extinction.

                (TVH\tff)

@ AD 2025       On Terra, the New-UN acquiescess to mounting pressure from pro-

humanity lobbyist groups outraged at the development of the

Nomad probe and other independent electronic intelligence

devices, by ratifying the Acts of Cumberland; a set of

regulations designed to provide for strict monitoring of the

development, utilization, and enhancement of artificial

                intelligence systems.

                (TC\tos), (EAF\tng), (TMOAM\tng), (UTLL\tng)

AD 2026       After eighty-five years, the fifty-six game home-run hitting

streak of the Terran baseball-legend Joe DeMageo is surpassed

by a short-stop for the London Kings.

                (TBGb\tng)

@ AD 2030       In the Zeta Orionis system, the acclaimed novelist

[untranslatable] authors his classic bestseller: _[ambiguous

translation]_; a drama inspired by the simple phrase

                [approximate translation: 'let me help'].

                (TCOTEOF\tos)

AD 2033       On Terra, the 52nd American state is admitted to the Union by

                the United States Congress.

                (TR\tng)

@ AD 2035       Birth of Dr. Zephram Cochorane, inventor of warp drive, on

                Terra.

                (Me\tos), (WGD\tos), (MAT\tng), (NG\tng), (TOu\tng)

                Matthews is first published.

                (TR\tng)

AD 2036       On Terra, the New-UN ratifies a human-rights resolution

specifically articulating that no Terran citizen may be made to

answer for the crimes of his race or forebearers.  The

referendum is passed on the fortieth anniversary of the end of

the Eugenics Wars in order to help stem the continued

persecution of hybrid descendants of the "super-humans".

                (SS\tos), (TIV\tas), (TWOK\tff), (EAF\tng), (UTLL\tng),

                (AMOT\tng)

Carribdus is launched from Terra.  Under the command of Colonel

Steven Riche; the Carribdus is Terra's third manned attempt to

                travel beyond the Sol system.

                (SB\tos), (TR\tng)

@ AD 2040       With the growth of more diverse, interactive forms of home

entertainment, traditional television becomes obsolete and dies

                out.

                (TNZ\tng)

AD 2044       In the Sol system, NASA loses telemetry contact with its

                interstellar exploratory shuttle Carribdus

                (TR\tng)

@ AD 2050       On Terra, the steadily declining chryonics industry finally

collapses due to changing social attitudes and a growing public

understanding of the falacious, unscientific nature of

                chryonics.

                (TNZ\tng)

@ AD 2050       Terra's ozone layer becomes so substantially weakened by the

unabated release of chemical pollutants into the atmosphere,

that global bombardment by high levels of ultra-violet

radiation causes cataclysmic health and environmental problems

which threaten the continued survival of Terran civilization.

The timely introduction of the Universal Atmospheric Element

Compensator developed by the Lukurion Group's bio-engineering

research outpost on Klent in the Mars/Jupiter asteroid belt,

narrowly averts irreversible global disaster by artificially

re-oxygenate the ozone layer and breaking down decades of

                accumulated pollutants.

                (BAC\tos), (TVH\tff), (WTBB\tng)

@ AD 2050       On Terra, the Draco lizard becomes1 extinct.

                (NG\tng)

@ AD 2065       On Terra, the brilliant propulsion physicist Dr.  Zephram

Cochorane pioneers the field of warp physics.  Utilizing a

                controlled matter/anti-matter reaction and a proto-type warp

coil, Cochorane succeeds in generating a stable sub-space field

and propels an unmanned test probe beyond the speed of light.

The rapid development and utilization of Warp Drive requires

the concerted efforts and resources of Terra's many nations and

space colonies to be achieved.  Several cooperative ventures

are undertaken to design and construct warp driven vessals.

The first starship development project produces the SS

Bonaventure.  The success of the Bonaventure's maiden voyage to

Alpha Centauri serves to spur on the construction of other

vessals.  The Bonaventure herself is lost during her third

                voyage near the Delta Triangle.

                (WNMHGB\tos), (Me\tos), (RTT\tos), (TTT\tas), (SB\tos),

                (TIV\tas), (WGD\tos), (EAF\tng), (TR\tng), (UTLL\tng),

                (BT\tng), (TM\tng), (MAT\tng), (TBOBWP2\tng),(FI\tng),

                and Trollesta clans.

                (TVF\tng)

@ AD 2065       The pacifist culture of Mizar II enters a period of successive

                conquests by various spacefaring neighbors.

                (Al\tng)

@ AD 2070       The Terra-10 mission departs from the Sol system carrying

colonists to a newly discovered class-M planet.  When

communications with the colony ship fail, it is presumed lost

                in deep-space.

                (TTI\tas), (UTLL\tng)

@ AD 2070       THE FORMATION OF THE UNITED EARTH SPACE PROBE AGENCY (UESPA):

On Terra, the New-UN continues to assert its leadership role in

Terran space exploration and colonization efforts by forming

the United Earth Space Probe Agency (UESPA) to oversee Terran

expansion beyond the solar system.  UESPA devises new

communication protocols to be used by all Terran interstellar

                vessals.

                (CX\tos), (TIY\tos), (TTI\tas), (EAF\tng), (TR\tng), (UTLL\tng)

@ AD 2070       In desperate need of mineral resources, Terra dispatchs survey

vessals to other star systems to seek out new potential

sources.  The SS Valiant disappears into a magnetic space storm

                while conducting such a search.

                (WNMHGB\tos)

@ AD 2070       THE FOURTH KZINTI WAR and THE TREATY OF SIRIUS IX: The fourth

interstellar conflict between the Kzinti and the humanoid

civilization of Sirius IX ends with the final defeat of the

Kzinti menace.  Under the terms of the imposed peace treaty,

the Kzinti are denied any form of armarments beyond those

                necessary for civilian law enforcement.

                (TSW\tas), (MP\tas), (TTT\tas), (TIV\tas)

revolution.  The planet's oppressive theocracy is supplanted by

                a hedonistic culture.

                (WITF\tos), (Rel\tng)

@ AD 2070       The religious messiah Alar spreads the philosophy of peace and

brotherhood among the warlike Skorr.  Before his death, Alar's

brain-wave patterns are recorded and memorialized in a piece of

                indurite sculpture.

                (TJ\tas)

@ AD 2070       On Ulia, centuries of violent cultural upheaval gradually

subside as peaceful social reforms sweep the planet.

                (V\tng)

@ AD 2075       Dr. Zephram Cochorane; perhaps the most famous human of his

time, leaves Terra to retire on the Terran colony in the Alpha

                Centauri system.

                (Me\tos), (RTT\tos), (WGD\tos), (MAT\tng), (NG\tng), (TOu\tng)

Academy, first makes telescopic surveys of Quadrant 904.

                (TSOG\tos), (TTWT\tos)

@ AD 2075       THE TERRAN NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST: After more than seven decades of

relative peace and growing international cooperation on Terra,

the movement toward global unification is shattered by a

successful coup in the United States by a growing reactionary

element of the American military establishment espousing hard-

line nationalism.  The coup's leader; dubbed "Colonel Green" by

both followers and foes, is an acknowledged US military

tacticical genius.  He and his followers employ secretly

developed chemical control agents of a highly addictive nature

to gain influence over other key US military leaders and

specialists.  Green's forces launch a campaign of chaos to

forstall any organized response to his takeover.  While

appearing to negotiate for a cease-fire with domestic

politicians and foreign representatives; Green executes a wave

of calculated assaults which invariably lead to the out-break

of global war.  The ensuing conflict is infrequently punctuated

by the use of tactical nuclear weapons.  As a result of Green's

mad ambitions, Terran civilization spirals downward into a

period of savagery and barbarism.  Only Terra's space colonies

                manage to escape the carnage.

                (TDY\tos), (RTT\tos), (TSC\tos), (EAF\tng), (TR\tng),

                (AMOT\tng)

@ AD 2075       THE FUNDAMENTAL DECLARATIONS OF THE MARTIAN COLONIES: Fearing

that the out-break of war on Terra might spread into space; the

multi-national colonial government of the Martian Colonies

takes unilateral action by abrigating its New-UN charter and

declaring itself, all Martian citizens, and all Martian

territories free and independent of any Terran authority.  In

adopting the Fundamental Declarations, the Martian Colonies

establish a free, democratic society.  Consumed by more

immediate problems at home, no Terran government is able to

take action against the colonial revolt.

                (Cm\tos), (WITF\tos), (TSC\tos), (EAF\tng), (TNZ\tng),

                (TR\tng), (UTLL\tng)

AD 2079       On Terra, the ravaged population stands on the verge of another

                genocidal war.

                (EAF\tng), (TR\tng)

@ AD 2080       Desperate Terran leaders successfully avert the onset of

another genocidal war; turning the planet instead back toward

recovery and reconstruction.  Diplomatic relations between

the United States and other war-torn nations are reopenned via

the ressurected New-UN, with the Martian Colonies acting as a

neutral mediator.  With the restoration of nominal peace and

order to many areas of the planet, the environmental clean-up

and economic recovery are allowed to begin.  On the medical

frontier, research into the treatment of radiation sickness

with adrenalin is abandoned when hyronalin; a bio-gen agent

proves to be highly effective in treating most known forms of

radiation sickness, is made widely availible.  The new drug

offers hope of relief for countless numbers of victims of the

                post-atomic horror.

                (TDY\tos), (RTT\tos), (EAF\tng), (TR\tng), (UTLL\tng),

                (FM\tng), (Di\tng), (AMOT\tng)

@ AD 2100       THE FORMATION OF THE EUROPEAN HEGEMONY: On Terra, the many

nations of the European continent successfully unite to form a

strong but flexible democratic government which serves as a

model for the development of a unified world leadership.

                (UTLL\tng)

@ AD 2100       On Terra, the philosopher Liam Degon founds the Neo-

transcendentalist movement; espousing distain for the fruits of

technology, and advocating a return to a simpler style of

living, more congruent with the harmonies of nature.  Degon's

teachings have notable influence on a global population still

recovering from the horrors of nuclear conflict.

                (UTLL\tng)

AD 2102       The DY-500/C-class vessal SS Hokuie'a is dispatched from the

Sol system by UESPA to conduct a deep-space exploration mission

                to the Ficus sector.

                (SS\tos), (TUC\tos), (UTLL\tng)

AD 2105       On the Martian Colonies, the unsolved stabbing-deaths of eight

AD 2285       Starfleet engineers complete two major starship construction

projects:  The USS Excelsior NCC-2000; a proto-type for a new

class of deep-space exploration vessals, is assembled at the

San Fransisco Navy Yards orbiting Terra.  The Excelsior is a

testbed for several of Starfleet's emerging technologies

projects.  It is initially equipped with an experimental

transwarp drive system which, despite its theoretical soundness

on the drawing-board, proves ineffective in actual field tests.

During the same year the first contingent of Constellation-

class starships, including the USS Hathaway NCC-2593, are

commissioned into service.  This new class of light cruisers

employs an Avidyne warp drive system.  With the rapid

production and deployment of Constellation-class vessals,

Starfleet begins to phase out its older Soyuz-class cruisers.

While most Soyuz-class vessals are decommissioned and scrapped,

succeed in stealing the Federation's top-secret Genesis device.

A confrontation between the "super-humans" and the USS

Enterprise in the Mutara sector leads to a mad act of revenge

by the insane Khan: The Genesis torpedoe is intentionally

detonated in the Mutara Nebula; creating a new star system with

an unstable class-M planet.  The open demonstration of the

new terra-forming technology also creates a host of far-

reaching galactic ramifications for the Federation.  Discovery

new round of diplomatic talks between the Federation and the

Klingon Empire to flounder under a wave of protests and

accusations as to the Federation's true intent in developing

such technology.  The Romulans also view the Federation's

motives with extreme suspicion and hostility.  When Starfleet

dispatches the science vessal USS Grissom to study the newly

formed Genesis Planet, Klingon forces move in; destroying the

shortly by the death of Duras himself in combat with Enterprise

Security Officer Worf; leaves Gowron as the de-facto successor

                to the imperial leadership.

AD 2367       The USS Enterprise is assigned to convey Federation Ambassador

T'Pel of Vulcan to a secret diplomatic meeting with Romulan

representatives in the Neutral Zone.  When the Ambassador is

abducted via sophisticated subterfuge; the Enterprise confronts

the Romulans, and discovers that the 'Ambassador' is in

actuality a Romulan spy returning home.  The incident

intensifies ever-increasing tensions in the region.

AD 2367-68    THE KLINGON CIVIL WAR: The on-going power struggle within the

Klingon Empire comes to a head when Gowron; the officially

designated successor to the imperial leadership, attempts to

solidify his claim by moving forward with his installation as

Chancilor of the High Council.  The family of former Councilor

Duras and their supporters challange the succession of Gowron

and publicly raise the spectre of Federation influence in

Klingon politics by questioning the neutrality of Captain

Jean-Luc Picard in his role as the Arbiter of Succession.  The

charge of Federation interference in the affairs of the Empire

serves as a rallying cry to muster armed opposition to the rule

of Gowron.  In the early stages of the ensuing conflict,

loyalist forces under the banner of Gowron suffer several major

defeats at the hands of the Opposition.  The overwhelming

forces fielded by the Duras faction on several fronts with

seemingly inexhaustible resources, leads Federation observers

to suspect covert Romulan aid to the Opposition.  In an effort

to expose the Romulan connection; Starfleet establishes a

blockade equipped with a tachyon detection net along the

Klingon/Romulan border and eventually succeeds in snaring a

Romulan supply convoy transporting desperately needed war

materials to the Duras faction.  With the exposure of the

Romulans' involvement and the loss of their supply pipeline,

the Opposition rapid falls apart; allowing Gowron's forces to

triumph.  Curiously; official Klingon accounts of the war

compiled shortly after its resolution, fail to make mention the

crucial role played by the Federation in helping to bring an

end to the conflict.  Several leaders of the Opposition,

including the sisters of Duras, evade capture and remain at

                large.

AD 2368       The sudden disappearance of Federation Ambassador Spock from

his native Vulcan, and his subsequent sighting on Romulus by

Starfleet intelligence sources, raises the spectre of a high-

level defection of disasterous proportions to Federation

security.  An immediate investigation by Starfleet personnel

reveals that a private diplomatic initiative undertaken by the

Vulcan ambassador and a member of the Romulan Senate aimed at

peacefully reuniting the Vulcan and Romulan peoples may be

nearing fruition.  Further investigation reveals the

reunification initiative to be a ruse by the Romulan military

designed to disguise an invasion force en route to Vulcan as a

peace envoy.  As the Romulan facade unravels, a complex web of

intrigue encompassing Federation smugglers, Ferengi arms

dealers, and Barolian traders is uncovered.  The ill-fated

invasion is thrawted, and the Romulan forces are intercepted

near Galorndon Core.  The Romulans elect to destroy their own

invasion force and retreat back across the Neutral Zone. In

addition to further aggrevating ever-strained relations between

the Federation and the Empire; the incident also underscores

the significance of a previous Romulan intrusion at Galorndon

Core nearly two years earlier.  Despite the failure of

diplomatic efforts with Romulan government, Ambassador Spock

chooses to remain on Romulus to aid in the fostering of a

growing peace movement among the Romulan masses.

AD 2368       While surveying the half dozen star systems comprising the

Argolis Cluster; an area being considered for colonization by

the Federation, the USS Enterprise discovers the presence of

Borg scout vessals in the region.  The Federation starship also

finds a humanoid civilization on the fourth planet of the

Tagra system.  The immenant danger of Borg encroachment on the

system causes the Enterprise to initiate first-contact.

AD 2368       Federation scientists discover evidence of alien visitations to

Terra during the 19th century.  Investigations by the USS

Enterprise uncover the prescence of time-travelers on Davidia

II carrying out termporal incursions into Terra's past to

collect large quantities of human neural energy for

nourishment.  The aliens' threat to Terran history is thrawted

by the destruction of their triolic power source.

AD 2368       In orbit of Tyrus 7A, the Tyrian Particle Fountian finally

AD 2369       After six decades of brutal occupation, the Cardassians

complete their systematic plunder of the Bajoran system's

natural resources and withdraw their forces from the area.  The

troop withdrawl is marked by excessive violence by Cardassian

soldiers in retribution for past Bajoran terrorist activities.

AD 2369       The deployment of additional troops by the Cardassian Union

along its disputed border with the Federation, coupled with

rumors of possible metagenic weapons experiments by the

Cardassians on Celtris III; prompts Starfleet to prepare for an

expected Cardassian incursion into Federation space.  Starfleet

Command also dispatches a group of USS Enterprise officers led

by captain Jean-Luc Picard to investigate the metagenic weapons

rumors.  Reconnisance efforts reveal the rumors to be a ruse

designed to capture Picard for interrogation regarding his

knowledge of Starfleet tactical operations in the border areas.

AD 2369       At the request of the Bajoran provisional government, Starfleet

establishes a presence in the Bajoran system to administer

Federation releif efforts and assist in near-space peace-

keeping activities following the withdrawl of Cardassian

occupational forces from the area.  Station DS9 is designated

as the control center for all Starfleet operations in the

system.  The subsequent discovery of a stable wormhole in the

Dinorius Belt, providing a permenant short-cut to the distant

Gamma Quadrant, serves to expand Starfleet's role in the area

to include the administration and protection of the phenomenon

                as a Bajoran natural resource.
