THE CRUSADE

THE CRUSADE.   Written by David Whittaker.   4 episodes.                 27th March - 17th April 1965.                The Lion, The Knight of Jaffa, The Wheel of Fortune, The War Lords.  COMPANIONS:- Ian, Barbara and Vicki.    It is 12th century Palestine and the Saracens wait to ambush King Richard  the Lionheart. The Doctor manages to save Richard and Barbara is kidnapped  by the Saracens. Ian rescues her but the main plotline of the story involves  Richard's attempt to end the Holy War by marrying his sister, Joanna, to  Saladin's brother.    This story was most notable for the appearance of Shakespearian actor  Julian Glover in the role of Richard. His acceptance of the role meant that  the programme gained some value amongst the more established acting set and  as a result, "name" actors wanted to appear on the show.
