   The Doctor encounters the evil Krotons when he lands on a planet to find
 its people, the Gonds, to be under their control. The Krotons live inside
 a huge machine, the Dynatrope and educate the Gond people who worship them
 as gods. The Gonds have large gaps in their knowledge and the Doctor is
 suspicious of the Krotons motives.
   Every year the Gonds send their two brightest students into the Dynatrope
 to become companions of the Krotons. In reality, the chosen ones have all
 of their mental energy drained to power the Dynatrope and their bodies
 are dispersed. The Doctor manages to rescue a girl student and then learns
 of the Kroton scheme. He gives the Gonds the knowledge to make sulphuric
 acid which they use to attack the crystalline Dynatrope. The Doctor and Zoe
 pass the Kroton tests and enter the machine where the Doctor uses acid to
 destroy them.
   This was the first Dr Who story written by Robert Holmes who later
 became one of the most popular writers the show had, inventing the Autons
 and the Sontarans. The story is available from BBC Video.
