INTRODUCTION:
Welcome! Following this introduction is a timeline of events chronicling the
history of the STAR TREK universe as it is dramatized in the television
episodes and feature films.
Although some obscure visual details have been confirmed by refering to photos
and illustrations from Starlog's STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION MAGAZINE and
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE MAGAZINE,, all source material used in compiling
this timeline has been taken directly from live-action & animated film/video
footage. No supplemental material has been taken from any 'authoritative'
written materials such as ST-phenomenon books, technical manuals, adventure
novels, or fan magazines.
This timeline has been organized as a chronologically ordered series of
independent entries. In numerous cases separate threads of information from
different sources have been drawn together and interwoven to produce a coherent
speculative picture of events in the STAR TREK universe. Less often;
contradictory data from different sources has been sifted, weighed for accuracy
and credibility, and then melded together to present a plausible compromise.
The author has made an effort to resist the temptation to unduly embelish
existing materials beyond reasonable extrapolations, or to "invent" new
information to fill in tantalizing gaps in existing material. The conclusions
offered in some instances in this timeline may not agree with the extensive
body of external fan-lore that has grown up around STAR TREK.
This timeline consists of several parts:
TIMELINE.INT : This Introduction.
TIMELINE.MAI : The Main Timeline primarily chronicles the rise of Terra as a
spacefaring civilization, as well as the formation and growth
of the Federation. It covers the period AD 1968-2369, and
focuses primarily on important events referred to in episodes in
historical context. it also includes events which occurr "live"
in one episode, and which are then mentioned again in a later
one.
TIMELINE.CRU : The Crew Timeline focuses on chronicaling the personal histories
of prominent characters in the STAR TREK universe. The same
criteria are used as mentioned above.
TIMELINE.GAL : The Galactic Timeline chronicles events in galactic history
prior to AD 1968. The torrential deluge of references to Earth
history have been ommitted to prevent this work from turning
into a grade-school Social Studies book, as well as to preserve
the sanity of the author.
TIMELINE.FUT : Rather short; the Future Timeline chronicles events which are
perported to happen in the far-distant future of the current
STAR TREK universe, as reported to the main characters by time-
travelers.
TIMELINE.ABR : The Appendix of Abbreviations contains an alphabetical listing
of episode abbreviations used in this timeline for the reader's
reference. The following explanation of episode citations should
make this more clear.
Each entry in this timeline is followed by one or more reference citations to
aid the reader in identifying which episodes have been drawn upon for
information for forming the entry. Episode citations are given in the format;
(XXX\yyy)
where "XXX" is an anacronym for a specific episode, and "yyy" is one of the
following:
'top' = The Original Pilot ("The Cage")
'tos' = an episode of The Original Series
'tas' = an episode of The Animated Series
'tff' = one of The Feature Films
'tng' = an episode of The Next Generation
'ds9' = an episode of Deep Space Nine
'atv' = the Alternate Television Version of "STAR TREK II: The Wrath of
Khan"
'mtv' = the MTV special "The Star Trek Logs"; a 25th anniversary special
starring Marina Siris as Deanna Troi, reveiwing the history of the
classic TREK crew.
Although an ever increasing number of precise dates for events are being culled
from computer displays shown in episodes of TNG and DS9; the vast majority of
the historical material presented in this timeline is never referred to with
specific dates. Generally, events are referred to as having happend "'X'
number of years ago". The following concrete date references have been used to
determine a framework for the rest of this timeline:
1) In the first season TNG episode "The Neutral Zone", Data states that
the current year is 2364.
2) In the MTV special "The STAR TREK Logs", a computer display indicates
that Captain Spock died and was ressurected by the Genesis device in
2285.
3) In the TNG episode "Evolution" Data makes a thinly veiled reference to
the severe technological problems suffered by the Enterprise-A in
"STAR TREK V: The Final Frontier", saying that these events happened
79 years earlier.
4) In "STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Khan", the following sequence takes
place between Admiral Kirk and Dr. McCoy in Kirk's San Francisco
apartment early in the film:
KIRK: (Examing McCoy's bottle of Romulan ale closely,) "2283..."
MCCOY: (looking sardonic,) "Yeah, well it takes this stuff a while
to ferment."
KIRK: (smiling,) "I'll say."
The apparent joke is that the bottle contains "cheap" Romulan ale; tts
only a couple of years old.
5) In "STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Khan", it is stated several times
throughout the movie by different characters that fifteen years have
passed since the events of the original series episode "Space Seed".
In instances where a precise date cannot be established for an event, an '@' is
used to indicate a close approximation.
When citing events related to Vulcans and Vulcan history, equivelant modern
Vulcan calendar dates have been provided. The following references have been
used to determine the workings of the modern Vulcan calendar:
1) It appears that Vulcan's cyclic period of solar revolution is slightly
longer than one standard Terran year. At the time of the animated
episode "Yesteryear"; (2272 AD,) it is indicated that Spock is 37
Vulcan years of age. In the MTV special "The Star Trek Logs" a
computer display quotes Spock's date of birth as 2231 AD. This would
mean that 41 Terran years = 37 Vulcan years, or;
1 Terran year = 0.90 Vulcan years
1 Vulcan year = 1.11 Terran years
2) Also from "Yesteryear"; Spock tells the Guardian of Forever that he
wishes to travel to his home 30 Vulcan years in the past. He then
tells Kirk that he needs clothing appropriate to that time period;
circa 8877. This would indicate that the current Vulcan year at the
time of the episode is 8907. With the other time related data just
cited, it is possible to calculate Vulcan dates.
There are a number of time-related references from various STAR TREK episodes
that do not correlate with the vast body of data used to calculate this
timeline. It is assumed that these references are erroneous and they have
simply been ignored. These include references from "The Squire of Gothos",
"Tomorrow is Yesterday", "Space Seed", "The Infinite Vulcan", "STAR TREK V:
The Final Frontier", "Encounter at Farpoint", "Sarek", "Rascals", "Tapestry",
and "The Nagus".
Regarding Stardates: For the purposes of this timeline 1,000 sequential
stardates are presumed to equal one standard Terran year. Although this
assumption is admittedly shaky when considering classic TREK material;
particularly the feature films, it is firmly bourne out by the TNG & DS9
series.
While perusing this timeline, the reader may ocassioanlly discover the
ommission of some obscure factual material from the episodes or feature films
which should be included in this timeline. While it is entirely possible that
the author has inadvertantly overlooked something, this isn't necessarily the
case. In a number of instances source material has been withheld when a lack
of specific detail surrounding a particular event makes it impossible to create
a meaningful timeline entry. The author maintains files containing fairly
extensive listings of obscure source materials so that if, in the future,
further references are made to these events in another episode, a timeline
entry can be composed.
All material included in this timeline is subject to change as we learn more
about the STAR TREK universe from future television episodes and feature films.
Updates will be issued periodically incorporating new data.
