My son found two extensions on a Apple CD called Graphics Accelerator and 7200 graphics accelerator. He installed them on an 8100/110 and it increased the rendering speed in Infini-D (2.6a) by about 4 times.  Have you heard of these and do they make one spcifically for the 8100 and 8500?

Hmm... I have "graphics accelerator" on my 9500 by default. I understood it to be the driver for the ATI-PCI vidcard. Its odd that it would increase ID's rendering speed...


BTW, did I understand the above post to say that you have BOTH of these items installed? Why?

If you've actually read or thought about any of the things that RicmaSoft is talking about, they're all related to wanting to make a game and interesting questions. Hardly spam at all. The questions are actually even put in the appropriate folders! Perfect material to spawn meaningful discussions. Are you perhaps offended that his login is appearing more than yours? Where is the button that turns you off, ErikTek?

It's really hard to get Myst quality (in terms of its look) in a realtime game.


First, a lot of rendering time is required to get photorealistic results. Qd3d (or any other graphics library, GL, Hoops, Heidi, etc.) aren't up to it. To get the look, you either have to use tons & tons of little triangles for all the models (sort of the Renderman micropolygon approach) or use computationally expensive rendering (EI, Strata, etc.) which can't currently be performed in realtime without a lot of expensive hardware. Either approach doesn't lend itself to realtime.

Second, the size of the database for a Myst game can be enormous. This also limits performance and possibly even if the game could run on typical PCs. The complexity of the models is a real bottleneck.


On the other hand, there are things that can be done to improve the interactivity of a Myst-like game. If you use QuicktimeVR (or a Qd3d equivalent) as the viewing mechanism, then at least you can look around the environment in a Marathon fashion. This way you could still render beautiful images but look at them in more interactive way than Myst's "slideshow." You'll still have to jumpe from spot to spot, however. 


There are also some tricks you can play by texture mapping simple polygonal models and putting this light weight models into your game (a Nintendo/Sega approach). But these always compromise quality for speed.

Cheap shot Crawfish, cheap shot.  If you want to bring up the past, fine by me, but don't fool this forum with your "psuedo saint" intentions.  My statement was in reference to the abudance of posts throughout the various categories, not the content.  Normally things can be summed up in one general post.

How can you possibly be offended when I simply used your own words to Ricsmasoft back to you? If I'm taking a cheap shot, then doesn't that mean you took a cheap shot?? Two sentences and I have a "very big and very crass mouth"?? I certainly don't care AT ALL personally about you. I just don't want your negative sarcastic comments to discourage somebody like Ricsmasoft from asking questions in whatever manner he feels like.

Thats just part of it, you took an oppurtunity to insult me directly.  Your motives are of a personal nature that go way back.  The quote I made has been made by many in this forum, why don't you go at the others as well?  You once again twist things around to make it appear as something else.  Why don't you let Ricma Soft speak for himself.  I never tried to discourage him from making posts, I was putting humour into the situation about posting in every topic folder.  You are the one who amplified this situation so ask yourself who the instigator is here.
