<<Digging out from the blizzard of '96 this turned out to be a lively chat.  Topics this evening ranged from finish, where to find a furniture design, making quick estimates of wood needs for projects, and a wax formula for lathe work, to where to look for tools, veneer, and edge joining.

READING LOGS

Most logs can be read using AOL software by double-clicking on the filename after downloading to your hard drive. Logs longer than 32K will need to be read in a text editor or word processing program.

GENERAL LOG INFORMATION

The filename should contain a code that tells you the subject and date of this log.

LOG FILENAME CONVENTIONS

Some early logs were recorded before the filename system was devised, and have non-standard (and sometimes cryptic) filenames. But generally, logs currently are coded according to the following formula:

Example: CWF0528.LOG

The "C" stands for "chat"

The "WF" stands for "wood finishing"

and the 0528 is the month and date (May 28, 1995)

The extension ".LOG" means this file is a log of a live meeting.

We are using the following two-letter abbreviations for subjects:

WF wood finishing

WT woodturning

WW women in woodworking

RR refinishing and repair

SG special guest

WC woodcarving

FR furniture refinishing

CB cabinets & built-ins

Our logs are grouped in separate libraries so AOL members don't have to search extensive lists to find what they want. Each log is found in only one library.

Read the file description for LOGS and LIBRARIES at the top of this library

for more information.

ElseNew: Much easier on shaper JE

FredD17209: better color and grain matching if you make your own doors I

think

ElseNew: Good point Fred

DaveLVWA1: Veneer ? anyone

MadOvHeart: just the THOUGHT of running a moulding head on a table saw scares

me

Bobalice: No snow in s fl, but at 45 to 50-- too damn cold to work in the

shop withj the door open.

MadOvHeart: <shudder>

ElseNew: All the time Dave

GJohns421: good door people will meet your spec for color and grain match

DIEWORKS: much safer too je - hard to work with 4 fingers.

HITCH47106: Die works  Love to but you'd probably never get me to quit!

Dt1212: dave..gotta question?

DaveLVWA1: Else, how does the pre-adheesed stuff hold up?

GELLR: Sears Tablesaw Fence - Any ideas on building a shop-made table saw

fence?

ElseNew: Spotty Dave

DaveLVWA1: better to glue yourself?

Dt1212: bob  ctrl fl know what you mean

ElseNew: Yes Dave

Livediver: Does anyone have ideas on undercabinet spice rack that pivots up

for storage??

DIEWORKS: gell ive been drawing up some designs myself

DaveLVWA1: Thanks Else

MadOvHeart: If you're just starting out, dave, try to go with the

paper-backed veneer,,much easier to

MadOvHeart: handle

ElseNew: Or 2 ply

GJohns421: just added cad to this mac

DaveLVWA1: paper backed meaning pre-glued?

MadOvHeart: and with paper back,,,you can cheat,,and used contact<grin>

ElseNew: Paper backed is usually paper thin

ElseNew: No Dave but it is flat

HITCH47106: GELLR- Saw a pretty neat one once made out of thick wall 1 1/4

elec conduit

Sailwood: Someone mentioned hot melt sheets for veneering the other night.

Any experience ou there?

MadOvHeart: paul, not if you stay away from "door skins" and buy from a

decent supply

Dt1212: dave like all paper

JSDOPM: Wood workers store catalog has some of the hrd wr for under cabinet

spice cab.

GJohns421: hot melt here

Livediver: thanks JS

Sailwood: How do you like it,GJ?

Dt1212: weldwood here

J Stiegel: I just entered what is the subject?

GELLR: DW - did you see the design in FW earlier this year?  Do you think

it's worth the time?

ElseNew: Weldwood plastic resin glue is very good for veneering

GJohns421: clothes iron wrapped in cloth

Dt1212: js pick one

Livediver: is system response time down tonight or is it just me?

ElseNew: Veneer right now JS

GJohns421: you live you

Dt1212: live ..its not you

J Stiegel: thanks elsenew

SHPSMITH: Not you, system is really sloooow

GJohns421: can we request the speed to increase?

HITCH47106: GJ- I use a small iron made to heat shrink plastic film for  r.c.

airplanes

Livediver: must be the coooold and snow up here

Sailwood: The more people using the system, the slower it is.

GJohns421: warm here

Dt1212: gj...where are you?

GJohns421: thank sail- welcome

GJohns421: mobile, al

J Stiegel: has anyone had experience selling boxes using inca jig joints? do

they sell?

MadOvHeart: wow,,,,two AW hosts,,,we must be in trouble

Dt1212: gj its 'cold ' in fl tonight

ALLENEAS: hi, I'm allen, home improvement contr, specialize in old home

renovations.  can't work

JSDOPM: Is there any opinions re edge joining boards with biscuts or just

glue?

GJohns421: what a novel idea JS

ALLENEAS: because i'm stuck in 3 feet of snow in b'more.

JEder3: good question j s anybody used the inca jig

DIEWORKS: use biscuits

J Stiegel: good joiner edge and yellow glue is as good as you can get.

ElseNew: Just glue up JS

GJohns421: use bis.

DaveLVWA1: biscuits not that much more trouble

Dt1212: jsd ..what is it to be used for?

FredD17209: JS I edge glued until I got biscuit cutter

Sailwood: Biscuits are good for aligning the boards, but add strenght

unecessarily in some cases.

DIEWORKS: alternate biscuits so not in center of edge its really strong!

HITCH47106: JS -I only use biscuits to align tricky setups otherwise just

glue

MadOvHeart: when is anything TOO strong?

FredD17209: for instance?

JSDOPM: I'm still lost here folks lots of opinion but reasons?

GJohns421: unesssary stength?

GELLR: Dieworks - Did you see the fence dsgn in Fine Woodworking last summer?

Is it worth the time?

JKF16: jsdo a good glue joint shouldnt need a biscut

ElseNew: When its stronger than the wood itself Mad

SHPSMITH: Biscuits are better than dowels and more foregiving

Dt1212: js...you'll need an engineer for reasons

Sailwood: You don't need to spend the time gluing up panels, but for

structural integrity in carcases

MadOvHeart: but unless it adds stress to the joint, i can't see strength

being a problem<shrug>

FredD17209: all glues are stronger then the wood

DIEWORKS: glue can sep after time y chance it ?

Sailwood: etc., it's a good thing as Martha would say.

JSDOPM: I'm glueing up boards for a cupboard 10-14 in.

J Stiegel: i have furniture sold to customers 10 yrs ago jointed and edge

glued. no callbacks yet.

Livediver: most of the time good glue is stronger than material it bonds

Dt1212: js...just glue wiill be fine

HITCH47106: JS- the reason I mostly use just glue is that a good glue joint

is stronger than the wood

JSDOPM: Thanks to all

KWMcclure: Greetings

GJohns421: gluing end grain like sitle to rail requires more the close fit

and good glue

ElseNew: Hi KW

DIEWORKS: no GJ I just started getting that mag and i sure wish there were

more issues.

KWMcclure: Had a bit of a hard time finding this. (grin)

MadOvHeart: actually,,,i mainly use the Lamellos mainly for alignment,,,a

good glue is more than

MadOvHeart: effective

Dt1212: js ..sorry we kinda bombarded you

ElseNew: Gluing up end grain I would use the biscuits or dowels etc

FredD17209: so do I J but biscuits speed the assembly and align edges fast

JKF16: js the best reason to use biscuts is alignment

JSDOPM: No sweat I'm looking to learn

JEder3: o.k. new subject

GJohns421: loose tenon double mortise

Dt1212: je ..did we beat that one to death or what?

DIEWORKS: ps i do have a tend. to overdo

JEder3: or what

GJohns421: isnt it

Dt1212: je...die...LOL

HITCH47106: GJ-are the tenons sxs or 1over the other?

GJohns421: both

GELLR: Dieworks- suggest you check local library. It looks like a simple and

cheap fence to build.

DIEWORKS: whats LOL?

HITCH47106: GJ- at the same time! GOOD GRIEF!

KWMcclure: (laugh-out-loud, Die)

J Stiegel: where do you use a loose tendon double mortise?

Dt1212: laugh out loud
