Welcome to the PADS Evaluation Package. This Evaluation Package is unique,
because it is the first PCB and schematic CAD program to be provided as
Shareware. This means that the Evaluation Package is not simply a demo disk,
but a complete, working copy of PADS-Logic and PADS-PCB. It contains all of
the capabilities of the commercial program, and can produce a complete set of
netlists and drawings. It is only limited in the size of the circuit you can
create.
With the PADS-Logic shareware package, you can create schematics, make plots,
produce net lists, define library parts... all of the functions of PADS-Logic.
With the PADS-PCB shareware package, you can automatically place your design,
autoroute it, create photoplot outputs and N/C drill files... all of the
functions of PADS-PCB. All drawings, library parts, and layouts you create can
be read directly by the commercial versions of PADS-Logic and PADS-PCB, so
every minute spent with this shareware is real work!
The PADS-PCB and PADS-Logic Evaluation software are each supplied on a single
disk. Additionally, there is a library disk shared by the programs.
In the root directory of all 3 disks, you will find the file INSTALL.DOC. This
file may be displayed or printed, and explains how to install PADS-PCB and
PADS-Logic on your hard disk.
The user manual for PADS-PCB is on the PADS-PCB disk under the name MANUAL.PCB.
The user manual for PADS-Logic is on the PADS-Logic disk, under the name
MANUAL.LOG. When you install the programs from the floppy disks, the user
manuals are also loaded into the hard disk in the \PADSDEMO directory. If you
do not have a published copy of the manual, you may create one by printing
these files with the DOS Print command or a word processor.

Now, due to the fact that installation requires a BIT of time for most, here's
what you must do to convert the files you just got from WUARCHIVE into some-
thing you can install:
Get the three files (PADSLIB, PADSPCB, and PADSLOG) onto your
hard drive. Also get 3 FORMATTED (MS-DOS) 1.44MB 3.5" disks.
[Note: you will need a hard drive with at least 7MB free or 2
3.5" 1.44MB floppy drives]
Put in the first disk and [assuming the 1.44MB drive is A:] type:
C:\> unzip -d padslog.zip a:
Swap in the second disk
C:\> unzip -d padspcb.zip a:
Swap in the third disk
C:\> unzip -d padslib.zip a:
Assuming all went well and since you need at least 7 Megs free (!!):
C:\> del padslog.zip
C:\> del padspcb.zip
C:\> del padslib.zip
Now, swap in the first disk again:
C:\> A:
A:\> pinstall
Go for "Shareware Install" and hit F1, select the destination
drive then the source (A:) drive and say "Y" to the next
questions... the computer should be busy for a while :-)
When it asks you if you want to install the "Library", swap
in the third disk and answer the same questions again.
To install the padspcb, go to the first menu of PINSTALL
and select "Shareware Install" again... you know the rest...
except that say that you do NOT want to install the library
again.
Not done quite yet! Go to the first screen of PINSTALL and
select "Hardware Configure" and just pick the VGA board you
have, then plotter, and then printer. You HAVE to have one
of each so just pick the one you WISH you had :-) and just
don't use it for printing.
Now, hit <ESC> and say "Y" to the exit question.
You're now done!
A:\> C:
C:\> cd padsdemo
C:\PADSDEMO> padsgo
Whoa!

And some more help to this "nob-obvious" program so you can enjoy it more:

(From SJM2228)
Subject: How to import schematic from LOGIC to PCB layout
To import a schematic file into PADS you must create a netlist
while in the LOGIC portion of the program. This part of the program
is listed either separately or in the IN/OUT section. Once you have
created the netlist, exit LOGIC and enter the PCB section. Start
off by creating a circuit board area by using the CREATE menu section.
Next, go to the SETUP section and use the ORIGIN command to redefine
the origin to the lower right corner of your board. Go to IN/OUT
and load in the NETLIST. PADS will load in the netlist and place
all components in a pile at the origin. Connections between components
will be rubberbands. Use the PLACE section to move the components to
the area of the board of your choice. Once all parts are in
position, use the ROUTE command to change the rubberband connections
into traces.
Last minute corrections can be made in the ON THE FLY section, it
is in the IN/OUT directory. Schematic updates can be automatically
incorporated into the PCB by using the ECO command in the LOGIC and
PCB portions. (ECO = engineering change order)
Since I do not have a laser printer, I find the printer output
section to be most helpful. I can create postscript files that
I then bring to school to print on their laser printers.
This is a powerful package and I have yet to master it. I am
writing this from school, so I do not have the program available
to me as I type this. Sorry I cannot be more exact on the
keystrokes. Should you have more questions, let me know.
(From Mont Pierce)
Subject: How to import schematic from LOGIC to PCB layout
To output a file from PADS-Logic that can be imported to PADS-PCB start
with your circuit on the screen from PADS-LOGIC and do the following:
Startup PADS-LOGIC and read in your circuit diagram.
Then
Select In/Out
select Reports
select Net List
select PADS-PCB
enter filename at prompt
Now you can import this into PADS-PCBS as an ascii import file.
Once you've imported it then all the ports will be displayed in the
bottom left corner. Next you can move the parts where you want them,
and then proceed to route the connections.

Randy Nevin
1731 211th PL NE
Redmond, WA 98053
--------------------------
(From Randy Nevin)
[This is the article that Mr. Nevin posts (used to post) to various newsgroup
for anyone what was interested in an autorouter. I've used it a few times
and it sure beats doing it by hand... that does not mean it perfect: it's
not. I was lucky to get 70% on 2 layer boards but that's still better than...
yes, doing it by hand. Besides it comes with a file on HOW autorouters work
and C source (!!) as well as a viewer (EGA/VGA) and printer. Try it!]
"You probably fit into one of the following groups:
(A) - You requested the freely-copyable autorouter that I've been
distributing for the last 2 years
(B) - You've discussed autorouters (or related topics) in comp.lsi.cad or
sci.electronics, and I probably just saved your name as someone who may
be interested in PC-based autorouters
(C) - You're one of the people who responded when I requested references to
the gerber format spec
(D) - None of the above, in which case I apologize for taking your time, and
you will not be interested in the rest of this mail
I'm sorry for lumping you all together into a form letter, but that is the
most expedient thing for me.
You bring you up to speed quickly: I've been distributing a freely-copyable
(I hold the copyright, but you are free to copy it, as long as you observe the
restrictions) autorouter package for MSDOS on the PC, including source. the
intent of the package is to illustrate how autorouting algorithms work (it
also resulted in an article in the Sept. 89 Dr Dobb's Journal). The user
creates a netlist, the package autoroutes it, displays it on the screen, and
prints it on a laser printer. I've also been working on enhancing it greatly
to make it a system that can be used for actual pcb design (like multi-layer
capability (8 layers), and rip-up and retry).
The reason for this email is that I don't have your US mail addresses. If you
would be interested in the product, and would either buy it (for the right
price; and btw, let me know what you think a fair price is) or be willing to
beta-test it, please send me your US mail address. When the product is ready,
US mail will be the way I'll announce it. I don't want to use email, which I
would consider to be a misuse of my employer's [MicroSoft's] resources.
If you want to [participate,] send me mail via US mail (or to get an update;
there have been a few bug fixes).
