Heart Of Tennessee Bulletin Board Service
Murfreesboro
The geographical center of Tennessee
The HOTtest BBS around brings you over 3 Gigs of free BBS!
Home of HOT DOORS Programers and there fine Door Programs.
Many a R.C.U.G. member has seen the logo of the HOT BBS. It often means
that the auto dialer on that favorite communications program has finally
gotten through. Now if you have enough time, take a look and grab the
latest shareware programs available in this area. Then check your mail
and your off to yet another BBS.
This seems to be the click of most users who log on to this BBS. I
would just like to point out that there is a lot more to the HOT BBS
that a few programs.
A few pointers to save time while on-line:
1 Capture your messages for down loading and then read them off line.
You may also want to learn how to edit your messages off line, then
upload back to the board, This saves time typing while on-line.
2 If you do not have the latest PKZip program be sure to download
it and and the latest listing from the Main Conference File area #1.
All the files in this area are FREE in time and download bytes. This
means it will not be charged to your allotted time.
Read your listings off line using Van Buerg's List program or your
favorite database. No need to download this more than once a month,
because all new uploads are placed into a separate directory.
3 Turn off the Menu (Expert mode), any time you need it to reference
just go for Help or ? and it will be displayed. Pressing enter gives
you the command line again. With the menu off you will also get
shorter command prompt help.
4 Turn on COLOR Menus. Many people will tell you that color
(or Graphics) will slow you down. This is not true (maybe at 300
baud). The color menus are more enhanced and easier to pick out the
command you are looking for. Unlike many other Bulletin Boards, we
have taken great pains to keep background colors off and use ANSI
color for shorter menus and faster time.
Be sure to have line feeds on for our color menus. We supply no
carriage returns (CR) at the end of each line.
Shareware programs make up a lot of what BBS users call Bulletin
Boards for! So I thought it only fitting to explain the term
Shareware.
Shareware is a general term for copyrighted software that uses a
direct-to-the-consumer marketing method, eliminating the retailer
and or middleman. Primarily using Bulletin Boards to advertize these
products. Unlike the conventional software you buy, you have the
opportunity to try it before you buy it. Some shareware programs
may be purchased or registered for a fixed price, while other
shareware companies or authors simply request a reasonable
contribution.
What a user gets for registering depends on the product. Many
shareware authors give registered users a nicely printed copy of
the documentation and one or more free updates. Others withhold some
useful parts of the program to encourage users to register. Upon
registration, they supply the new working version of the program.
When Down loading Shareware programs from Bulletin Boards or
purchasing shareware programs from vendors (Selling shareware disk)
you are not purchasing the software. You are simply paying for the
disk, copying and distribution service, or time to download. If the
product is "SHAREWARE", the authors will still expect you to register
and pay them later if you find the program useful.
"PUBLIC DOMAIN" software authors authorize use of their software
without paying the author any fees. "CRIPPLE WARE" and Demo ware are a
waste of disk space for most Bulletin Boards because they offer
nothing more than advertizing.
