What it is
=-=-=-=-=-
attoClock is a very small application (7494 bytes) for System 7 that displays
a
digital
clock in a small window. It has intentionally few features. It displays the
hour
and
minute, respecting the time format you have set in your control panels. It
doesn't display
seconds or the date or ring chimes or display movies or pictures or
animations.
Just the
time.

Current Contents Converter (CC converter) is a utility that converts
information
downloaded from a Current Contents database either into a format (Refer/BibIX)
that can be imported into most bibliographic programs or into a more
'readable'
form. It was designed for use with the CAUL Current Contents online service
which is available at all Australian universities. Your mileage with other

Desert Trek version 1.01

Desert Trek: Desert Trek is a game of adventure where you try to cross
the great Gobi Desert. Be careful, though, since hungry cannibals are
chasing you. Watch your food and water supplies, try to find an oasis
or two, visit the trading post for supplies, and hope that those wild
Berbers don't kidnap you again.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 2.1.1
Disk Charmer 2.1.x is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!
New from version 2.1:
A wonderful and subtle bug lurked in the code I wrote to allow the
marvelous additions in 2.1. This could cause subtle hangs while
Disk Charmer was creating the disk catalog.

FastTracker... "the lightning-fast way to find a bolo game"
I wrote this in about a day as a quick method for finding Bolo games. With
just a keystroke, you can find a list of current games on the internet;
with another, you can launch Bolo with the game information on the Clipboard.
Just type Cmd-Shift-5 from any program, including the Bolo startup dialog.
The FastTracker dialog will come up and give you the latest information.
(Remember, you need MacTCP to use FastTracker, or to play Internet Bolo).

Hello
Ther seems to be something wrong with the file File_Identifiers.sit.hqx
that I uploaded some days ago. So here we go again.
A File Identifier, FIID, is a file that substitutes an application you
don't have so that a file created by the missing application is presented
with it's right icon and file type information in Finder.
File_Identifiers.sit contains a short instruction on how to make File
Identifiers and also a few readymade FIID's and dummy files to show how
they work.

Galactic Empire version 2.02
============================
Supports Color or Black-and-White
This version of Galactic Empire fixes a couple of bugs present in both
versions 2.0 and 2.01. Also, you can now decommission troops instead
of scrapping them (or, if you want to, move troops fromone planet to
another). There are also a few interface enhancements, such as being
able to use the "escape" key to cancel most of the dialogs, and you
can now select planets in the Galactic Map window by clicking on their
names as well as the planet itself.
Galactic Empire: You are asked to unite the twenty planets of the
galaxy, by force, before civilization decays. You can utilize planetary
resources to build fighters, spy satellites, and transports, recruit
soldiers for ground forces, raise money for ship construction, and
produce the fuel and supplies your fleet needs. Planets have varying
technology levels and populations, and you can determine how best to
allocate their resources. Time is limited (one only lives for so long),
so plan carefully.

Despite its condensed and generalized format it still provides some thought-

Subject: Adding Charts in SuperCard ?
Hi,
I am currently a fourth year student in computer engineering at the
University of Technology of Compiegne, in France.
I have to do a work with SuperCard for the University.
I need to add charts to my cards. I try using Chartoid 1.0b3
but it doesn't seem to work under SuperCard 1.6 (I have no
problem under HC2.1, it works just fine !).
I just learn that Chartoid can be used with SuperCard because it relies
on HyperCard 2.1's external windows interface.
So I can't use Chartoid. Is there anybody that can tell me of a simple
way of addind chart into my card (XCMD ?) that will work under SuperCard.
Thank you very much in advance.

Many thanks in advance.

Subject: Alternative Color Monitors (Summary)
Thanks to all who responded to my query on alternatives to Apple's
low-end color monitors. The most recent review is in the August 1993
MacUser, "Color for Less", pp. 120-130. The following 14"-15" monitors
were reviewed (Number of mice, out of a maximum of 5, in parentheses):
Apple Macintosh Color Display (4.0), Apple Performa Display (2.0), Apple
Performa Plus Display (3.5), Nanao Flexscan F340iW (3.5), Sigma Designs
ColorMax 15 (3.0), and Sony CPD-1430 (4.5). Ads in Macweek put the Sony
1430 at $595. MIT's computer store, which is usually not cheaper than
open market, prices the Apple Mac Display at $480.
How do 13" monitors compare to 14" & 15" monitors? There were several
ads in MacWeek for the Apple 13" Hi-res monitor and the Sony 1304 for
less than $400. The resolution of the 13" and 14" monitors are the
same, at 640x480, so does that mean that the image on 13" monitors are
smaller but sharper? 13" monitors are reviewed in the file

shareware software called "Blindfold," which can make files and/or folders

empty. Does anybody know its whereabouts? Or, better yet, can somebody who
has it upload it to sumex? Thanks.

Well, SUMEX seems to be a very popular spot.
The only thing that annoy me is that it takes quite a while to get the
information that all lines are busy.
So I wonder - is there some way to send some kind of 'ping' to a host to
query the connect status of that machine?
I'd really like to see something like this on my screen:
$ ping -ftp sumex-aim.stanford.edu
[sumex-aim.stanford.edu]
FTP Connections Info
LocalTime: 12:03pm
Users: 60 (max: 60)
Status: busy
$ ping -ftpinfo sumex-aim.stanford.edu

For more info read file "info-mac/somepath/file" about FTP connections

Subject: diskette pricing
I just finished formating the last of a batch of 50 HD diskettes I bought
>From MEI-Micro Center. They all formatted properly, as did the 25 I bought
a couple of months ago. All 75 were PC-grade diskettes, and cost 9 cents
less than the Mac-grade diskettes they offer.
Which makes me wonder, is there really any difference in the PC-grae and
Mac-grade diskettes which MEI sells, or is this an example of what
economists call price discrimination. I know of no one else who makes
a PC/Mac distinction with diskettes. When I ordered the first batch of
PC-grade diskettes from MEI, the saleslady protested and told me I could
not do that. (I am in their database as a Mac user.) I asked if the Mac
grade was a higher quality. She said, "No," but said it was different.
Only vagueness followed.
If a seller can in some way divide its customers into groups by their
willingness to pay, sos that it separates those who will pay more from those
who are more sensitive to price, it can increase profit.. (This is what
economists call price discrimination.) Here is an hypothsis: MEI discovered
that Mac owners are willing to pay more for computer-related items than PC
owners. Upon discovering this, they invented a way to make a distinction
between essentially identical diskettes, and then charge by willingness to
pay. Can you disprove this hypothesis? Have you found any differences in
the PC-grade and Mac-grade diskettes? Or should all Mac users do what I
do when buying from MEI, buy the PC-grade diskettes?
(MEI offers great prices--for example, their laser labels are much cheaper
than Avery's. Unfortunately, many of their items, such as CD-ROMs, mice,
and keyboards, exist only for DOS users. Does anyone know if any seller
offers the same values to Mac users?)

The most likely culprit is AutoDoubler (I use still 1.07i).

It may have been corrupted by other inits.
I have turned off most inits using Now-StartupManager, but have kept

Subject: GeoPort Questions
I'm a college student whos owns a Centris 660AV and a GeoPort. In response
to your questions concerning this wonderful piece of hardware, I would
suggest investing in it.
Question #1) I have made reilable and speedy connections with the GeoPort
at 14.4kps V.42.bis. I set my communications program to 19,200kps and it
works great! I'm not sure what comm program you use, but I would
reccommend White Knight 11.12 or one that has Z-modem file transfer.
Question#2) If you are referring to the speakerphone capabilities, I would
say that you might want to turn up your volume in the Sound Control Panel
to somewhere in the middle. Using Apple Phone, which is located in a
folder "Apple Extras" our your AV's HD, you can manipulate the volume even
higher. Modem connections are fine, and I haven't used the fax yet, but I
know that you can only use the GeoPort for one of these functions at a time.
Question#3) The GeoPort utilizes the modem/GeoPort port on the back of
your machine, so the video functions aren't bothered. In regards to the
sound, you have to have the Options in the Sound Control Panel/ Sound
Input on Microphone w/ no playback to use the microphone. If you don't
have a CD-ROM drive, don't worry abot this, since the microphone will be
the default setting.
Question#4) I'm not sure what will become of the GeoPort after the release
of the PowerPC, but why worry about it now. You have a machine that has
some of the features that will come standard with the PowerPC macs.
I hope that this answers your questions. If you have any specific
questions, feel free to e-mail me at:

Remember, all AV users are in this together! :)

Subject: getting mac files off the internet
Hello netters...
When I want to get files off the internet to a PC, I use the binary mode,
download to the mainframe, then download to a PC. The file is usually in
a ZIP format. I then use a PKUNZIP program (which self-extracts) to get
to the contents of the ZIP file. Another common PC archiver is the ARJ.
Now, I find myself in need of some experts to teach me about how to get
files for the MAC. I'd have to do the same thing as before:
-get the file off the net using FTP to a unix based mainframe.
-get the file off the mainframe to a PC, with another FTP
-get the file off the PC to a floppy using the DOS copy command
-get the file to the MAC by putting the floppy into the drive, and
dragging the file to a folder on the HD.
or in really simple terms: INTERNET->MAINFRAME->IBM PC->MAC IIsi
the mac that I use has a program on it that recognizes a PC floppy, but I
think it recognizes all the files on the floppy as being IBM PC files,
instead of MAC files. Still, I can load up GIFs and other picture formats
off of my PC disks.
When I went to the FTP place to get the mac files, I was unpleasantly
surprised to find out that MACS also have their own archiving format. I
properly downloaded .hqx files using the ascii mode as I was instructed,
and compiled MCVERT on the mainframe, to convert them to MacBinary, and
took them to the mac, but it didn't like them. They were "simple" gif
files, and the program that I use to view them with (adobe photoshop) gave
me an aerror message saying it didn't recognize the header or
something like that... which means they didn't convert properly or
something.
MY Question: how do I transfer files from the internet to the MAC,
now that my initial and subsequent attempts using this particular
method have failed?

Just read the articles in both MacWeek and PC Week about Apple's plan to
roll out the DOS Compatible Quadra 610 during Fall Comdex '93. Seems like
a good machine for people (like me) who has a Mac at home but have to deal
with DOS at work.
Both articles state that the Houdini card use a 486 chip but fail to
mention the speed (DX/33, DX/50, DX2/66?) Anybody out there (who has not
signed a non-disclosure agreement, of course :->) knows more?
Also, it is mentioned that the card plugs into the 040 PDS, and as far as I
know, only the 610 and 660AV (I'm not counting the WorkGroup Server 60)
have the 040 PDS, correct? Does that mean the Houdini card can only be
used with these Macs?
Does Apple plan to release just the Houdini card? If so, I would probably
get a Quadra 660AV (I have a IIfx running at 50MHz at home, but it seems
slow ;-> compared to other people's machine,) then get the Houdini card to
be DOS compatible.
Oh, BTW, does anybody beside me sees the parallel here to when Sony (Apple)
finally released a VHS (Intel) VCR (PC)? Is the day of the Betamax (680x0)
numbered? Should I wait for the 8mm (PowerPC)?

Well, I don't have a Spanish keyboard on my system,
but if you have the US keyboard installed, too,
then you might consider this:
1) Switch to US keyboard with cmd-opt-space.
2) Use shift-3 to get a '~'.
3) Switch back to your keyboard (again with cmd-opt-space).
Or install the German keyboard, too, and use ctrl-opt-n. ;-)

I thought about steno the first time I heard about graph pads (long
before Newton): the basic problem seems to be that modern forms of
it (following Gabelsberg, in English I think Pitman) rely on pressure.
I don't think graph pads are yet very good on it. (But I may be wrong,
this could probably be included).
This may be overcome by different forms of stenography (there are historical
examples). Even limited steno could help: recognizing a 'longhand' steno
would already be helpful (accepting radically simplified letters and a few
shorthand abbreviations).
Another problem remains: even if you get transcript to letter text it is
much more ambiguous than standard writing. You may accept that or you need
a system which has at least limited capability of natural language
understanding. Court and parliamentary stenographers are asked to transcribe
their text immediately after the session! (although they can in most cases
read their text later with similar ease).
This is a problem
even more for Newton which is localized: it has separate versions
for English, French, German ... (and none for exotic languages).
Newton is no good before it speaks at least English _and_ German
(in my case). But I would also like to write passages in French, Greek,
Russian (I am studying chinese by now, but one should not be too
ambitious for a machine).

Subject: Quad 605 will not boot
Hello netters:
I have just purchased a Quadra 605 to replace my LCII. I have an
external LaCie 40M ZFP hard disk that was attached to the LCII (and an
SE before that). When I attach the external hard disk to the 605,
the 605 will not boot. Sometimes it will get as far as the "Welcome
to Macintosh" banner, but usually the boot process stops at the happy
mac face that is displayed when the mac finds the boot code. If I
disable the processor cache and then attach the external drive, the
605 will boot, and the drive is recognized and mounted. If I attach
the external disk back to the LCII, it works fine. When the processor
cache is enabled and the drive is attached to the 605, the mac
just hangs, regardless of whether the external disk is powered on
or not. Yes, that's right, the 605 still hangs during the boot even
if the external hard disk is switched off. Thinking that perhaps I
had a bad 605, I took the external hard disk to the Apple dealer and
attached it to the demo 605 that they have. Same problem, but not as
frequently. I put a terminator on the external disk, even though the
documentation says that is not necessary, but it does not help. I
called LaCie technical support and Apple technical support. Apple
says the disk might be too slow (it is about 3-4 years old) for the
fast processor of the 605. LaCie says maybe a bad cable, but they
seemed stumped. System 7.1 is installed on the internal disk, and
the external disk is formatted and empty. Any ideas or suggestions?
thanks,

Here's a tip that I picked up somewhere on the net: to get the release
number for Q4, open the the 'About Quicken' box and hit the 'R' key. The
release number should appear next to the version number.

Hello.
I'm having problems with version 2.5.1 of Quickmail. It seems to have
trouble dealing with internet messages. Specifically, my Info-Mac
digest often arrives in up to five seperate parts.
Now I'vre read the manual, and this states that any text above 24k
will be sent as an enclosure to the main message. This is not what is
occurring. The breaks -seem- to be arbitrary - sometimes there are
enclosures, sometimes not. Even when there are enclosures the message
is still broken up over a number of seperate messages.
One thing I've noticed (although it may be pure co-incidence) is that
the breaks seem to happen near the word 'e-mail'. I'm just wondering
if this is some sort of control signal that I don't know about.
Whilst I'm on the subject of Quickmail, I might as well ask a few
questions about version 2.6. Does it finally support the extended
keyboard? In other words, can you finally page up, page down and use
the delete key? I -always- get extremely annoyed with packages that
don't allow that.
Cheers,
Ian

Hello everybody,
I'm searching for a Mac Version of the XPS Shell CLIPS. I have the postal
adress where to obtain it, but I wonder whether it is available on any file
server. This would be the faster and more convenient way to get it. Is it
correct, that the newest version is 6.0?
Thanks for infos

I have a Mac IIci, running system 7.1, with a fax modem (hooked to my modem
port) which I need to share with another Mac user (we are both connected to an
ethernet LAN).
I contacted the fax-modem company, but they have no software to support
multiple users.
Is there software that will enable me to share my modem port with another user
via the LAN?
(I have tried the "Port Share" demo but am unsure it meets my needs and I have
had no luck contacting the company that developed it)

So, I recommend him to use SoftPc. I know it's ok to do little things.
The problem is that he has a Mac Classic and he need a special version

I would like to find a Demo-version to let him decide if it's worth buying

Subject: Symantec has Great Support for Norton Utilities
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CC:Mail To SMTP Converted Message.......vjd 9/27/93.................Version
1.1
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm in no way connected with Symantec other than as a very satisfied user
of Norton Utilities 2.0, but after the tremendous job their support person
Mike
did for me last night I feel compelled to give them a little public
acknowledgment.
After 5 years of religiously rebuilding my desktop, running Norton Disk
Doctor and Disk First Aid every 2 weeks whether I need to or not, always using
the latest system software, and optimizing with Norton Speed Disk every once
in
a while, *it* happened: Disk Doctor reported it couldn't fix something, and
Disk First Aid (the "good" one - v7.2) didn't even know anything was wrong!
I couldn't believe that I would actually, finally, have to back up my
drive
and reformat it. Even through all the lousy shareware, fancy network
software,
and just plain dumb stuff, Norton and Disk First Aid always came through.
Running it every few weeks often found bad data structures that appeared for
apparently no good reason, and I'm convinced that doing this, instead of
waiting for bad symptoms to appear, is why it took 5 years to come to this.
So, in a panic (not really - I did have a backup :-), I called Symantec
support, and got the infinitely patient Mike on the line. *One hour* of disk
editing later, my data structures were healthy, and I had saved several hours
of backing up, reformatting, and restoring my drive. So the saga continues -
5
years with no reformatting and still going. It must be some kind of record,
especially the way I treat my disk. Thank you Symantec, Peter Norton, and
Mike.

Subject: Symbionts vs. SAM for first loaded
Symantec Anti-Virus must load before all extensions or else you will get a
box saying it could not load the Virus Definitions file.
I installed the Symbionts extension when I got it with the MacWarehouse Power
Users Tool Kit 19. When PUTK 20 came in recently, I installed the Symbionts
control panel. Now Symbionts insists on being the first to load. The control
panel has no obvious way to rearrange the order in which extensions load.
I've checked the naming of the extensions and SAM is ahead of Symbionts in the
Extensions folder.
Anybody got a solution? Is there something I missed in the Read Me file?

Subject: Unix for Mac Reply
For the some of those people on the net asking;
Yes, there is a free Unix for Mac. Actually, there are several.
The first is from Berkeley (I think at lilac.berkeley.edu). A converted
version of NetBSD. It only supports certain Mac models right now, more to
come. It does not run on top of a Mac system. It totally takes over the
Mac.
The other, I think its Unix, is a converted version of Mint form, I
think Atari. It's called MacMint, and it runs on top of Mac OS, like
MachTen does. It is a real OS, with it's own memory management and so on.
These two are the only systems that I know of. There might be
more. Also, please do not quote me on any of this. I could be flat out
wrong. However, I doubt it.
