Serial Cable Information/Configuration
*************************************************************
The following information is provided for those who wish to
make their own serial cables. The various manufactures and
possible conditions of serial requirements are not always
standard. However some basic possible configurations are made
here to save your sanity. Trial and error maybe necessary to
configure for the final working cable setup.
Possible equipment necessary for easier making of your cables
are listed as follows:
1. Serial breakout box
2. Small screwdriver
3. Gender changer (read NOTE3)
4. Universal 25 pin flat cable
If you don't have the above, just make do.
MODEM ADAPTOR NULL MODEM NO HANDSHAKE FULL HANDSHAKE
pin - pin pin - pin pin - pin pin - pin
1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1
2 3 2 3 2 3 2 3
3 2 3 2 3 2 3 2
4 4 4) 4) 7 7 4 5
all wired 5) 5) 5) 5) 5 4
25 25 7 7 6) 6) 7 7
6) 6) 8) 8) 6----\ 8)
8) 8) 20) 20) \20)
20) 20) 8)\
20)\----6
Let me explain the above configurations:
-------------------------------------------------------------
) = jumpered to numbers with it immediately followed
8 - 8 = are connected
\-- = are connected plus jumpered
*NOTE1* Those numbers jumpered are not connected unless
stated so and are at the same DB-25 connector end.
*NOTE2* The modem adaptor is bested used when a printer cable
was the means of serial connection and is no longer
being used, but a modem is.
*NOTE3* The DB-25 pin connectors are either male or female
types, make sure of your needs before proceeding.
Gender changers reverse the types of connector ends.
