I went to a workshop on this very topic in Dallas - it was called "Down and

Dirty Advice for Selling Your First Novel".

The speaker said that when this happens, if they don't tell you clearly what

the problems are, call the editor.  First, ask if it's a good time for her to

talk, and then, BRIEFLY, tell her you received her letter, and would like to

revise.  Ask her what SPECIFICALLY she thought was wrong.  Do NOT be

defensive, just listen.  Then, ask if you can think about her advice, and

call her back to run your ideas for revision past her.  Then write like crazy

and resubmit.

This worked for LOTS of people who were in the room for the workshop.  Anyone

online had a similar experience?  Anyone else should definitely put in their

two cents!  In any event, revise and resubmit.  It sounds like you've got a

great shot!

quickly, but the rejections seem to be put aside and are sent out together.

Actually, good way of knowing the status before it happens (I guess!).

look like a hero.  His girlfriend turns him in after she discovers

incriminating evidence.  I am SO excited!

Girls - I have a question about novel #2.  Is it highly unusual to have a

hero (in an ethnic romance)  who still has to, shall we say,  "practice"

speaking English?  My hero just came on the boat from Cuba, so it's really

unrealistic to think he'd speak the King's English!  <G>

& Gail & (I believe) Larita:  how's everybody coming with their novel lately?

I find the hardest thing is working on the confessions & the novel both,

finding the time to squeeze everything in.  The "spirit" of each individual

story, if you know what I mean, seems to infringe sometimes on the other

story's "spirit"!

Connie, you're right about it being hard to work on confessions and a novel

at the same time.  I keep trying to go into first person in my novel.  Every

now and then, I have to check for any "I"s or "me"s.  Does anyone else have

that problem?  I find that it's easier to get the emotion in the first person

writing, but the third person story can have more than one POV.  That's the

beauty of writing for both markets.  It helps us to stretch our skills as

writers.

The way I've been squeezing all my writing in is to ignore all the dust

bunnies and the dishes that pile up in the sink, waiting to be loaded into

the dishwasher.  I stick my own in there, and eventually one of my children

or my husband will load it.  One of these days, they might get the idea that

if they each put their own dishes in the machine as they go, the task will

run much smoother.

I've already asked Connie this, but I was wondering about everyone else's

experiences.  How many stories have you had in one magazine at one time?  The

reason I wanted to know is that one of the romance writers I saw on a news

consideres "a living"?

Debbie - Yes!!!!  Exactly!!!  LOLOL!!  I just did that today, too; I kept

thinking,  "Well, what if I switch off & come from Maritza's point of view,

let her talk?"  That's my main problem; I feel like an observer, and when we

do the confessions, we're actually in there on the action.  What I've found

helps is something I read somewhere - an author saying that when she wants

those characters to reveal themselves, she lets them go into dialogue.  She's

right:  I found that's a good way to get the emotion in there.

Don't use a lot of dialect, that is such a turn-off in a book.

difficult- but I also get so into the characters that it's hard to write both

I read a Harlequin Temptation a while back, where a hero (Russian I think)

the 70's and getting it all wrong.

It was really good!

Deb, I chuckled when I read your comment about slipping into the first person

when working on your novel.   I'm working on a romantic suspense novel that I

started in the first person because I'm more comfortable with it due probably

to confes writing.  I changed it to the third person because it really wasn't

working, but yesterday I was proofreading the first draft of the third

chapter and one scene myseriously got written in the first person anyway.  It

seemed to want to be told that way.

Deb,  In answer to your question about having more than one story in one

magazine, I have two in Nov. TL & two in Dec. TR so I know it's possible,

although I never had more than one in an issue before.  As to the question of

making a living from confes writing alone, I'm not sure it's possible any

longer, though it probably was at one time.  I'm not sure of my facts, but I

believe that years ago the confes paid close to what they pay now and fifteen

years ago you might have been able to support yourself on $250.00 a story.

Wish it could still be done.

I wonder how long ago that romance author made a living writing confessions.

Sad to say, the magazines pay the same per word amounts now they did back in

Sometimes when I'm having trouble with a scene in my book, I'll go ahead and

write it in first person.  Then I'll change it to third later.  I suggested

this to a critique partner who was having trouble staying in one character's

point of view and she said it really helped.

Patty - That's interesting, because a suspense novel, hmmm...yeah, that's a

tough one, because you like to get "behind the scenes" without your narrator,

so you can cause trouble.  But it can be done - my thriller confession was

originally a YA novel I never sold in 3rd person, and it was tricky, but you

can switch off to 1st.  Advantages, disadvantages - like Debbie says,

sharpens us even more!

Truly, the news didn't bum me out.  We're writers, right?????  We have to

expect rejection.  Right before my computer became Satanic, I queried ten

fact that I'm not a morning person.  Now, I come home, change my clothes, and

go straight to the computer room.  (I should work out first, but oh well.)

My husband doesn't get home from work until about 2 or 3 hours after I get

home, so I have time to work, and still have time to throw something together

for dinner.  (thank god for microwaves, frozen instant meals, and rice

cookers!)  It works for me, but I realize I'm really lucky, because most

people can't work at that schedule.  Often after we eat, we're both back on

our computers until we go to bed.  But then, a lot of times we turn on the TV

Connie-

I sometimes think dialect in a novel is disruptive, but you did a great job

of handling it in the story with the Cuban girl.  I think it would definitely

give you some possibilities for humor, as long as it's coupled with

understanding.  (Remember Lucy & Ricky?)

Connie,

The only thing to careful about is using too much dialect.  It can get

distracting.  Yes, it can be charming and humorous.  My advice...

I aim to make my writing flow -- not to have places where a reader stops to

re-read a sentence to wonder what it meant, or go back three lines to figure

out who is speaking, or flip back a few pages to remind themself who the

secondary character is supposed to be.   See what I mean?  As authors we draw

our readers into a fantasy world.  They become part of it and if we lose

them, it is hard to draw them back.

I gave up reading one historical romance that had so much dialect that I

couldn't follow the dialogue.  I doubt you would do this, but just a

suggestion.  Ethnic is great.  A hero who is struggling with English is very

timely.  I'm sure you can achieve the right balance.   Jan

I'm logging these new posts as I go along.  Finally, I decided I have to post

my replies online or I never remember to post my comments when I get back

here.  Just want to apologize for not responding to all the good news

individually.  You are an inspiring group!

Jodi -- know what you mean about getting more hours at the store than you

want.  The Petsmart where I work is new and now many of the kids are going

back to school.  We have two daytime cashiers (I'm one of them) and two night

ones.  Very short staffed.  And standing several hours and being friendly for

several hours is very tiring for me.  I can scribble a few paragraphs during

my break, but I have little energy to come home, make dinner, and then sit

down at the computer.  I have today off and I'm catching up on all the online

news.  One other thought about sore feet -- if you have to wear nice shoes

like I did when I worked at a department store -- Dr. Scholl's makes an

insert for dress shoes.  They really help cushion your feet.  But nothing

helped me yesterday when I sprained my toe before work and then had to go

stand on it for 6 1/2 hours.

First person:  I have written a couple first person YA books.  I love it.  I

remember a writing teacher who said it was hard to maintain first person in a

story.  Not for me.  I love being right inside my character's head, sharing

her thoughts.  On the other hand, my critique group had suggested a change a

short story from first person to third.  In that case, it improved the story

and it sold to 'Teen.  I'm beginning to think the choice of person depends on

the story.  I want to write a novel about a teenage girl who is sexually

harrassed.  And it seems that story is begging me to write it in first person

to really capture her inner feelings.

I'm with all of you who can't find enough time.  My head is full of

characters demanding their turn.   Have a question?  Probably it is the ton

of stress in my life but I can't find the passion for writing that I used to

have.  I've heard several authors say if they talk about a story in progress

that they lose the energy from it.  If keeping my mouth shut (very hard for

me) would help my harness the energy, I'm going to have to try it.  Any

thoughts?

Online addiction.  It's hard, but I try to limit my message boards visits to

once or twice a week. I have to do it during the day, because my dh hates

when I'm online.  But he hates everything else I do, too, so I don't take it

too seriously.  But my hard drive is full of logs that I need to read!   I

can only conclude that days are too short!

Just got a message from Pat to pass along.  Even though the deadline is

getting close, she said not to rush and definitely plot your story out before

writing.  It sounds like she'd rather have our stories well done but late

than rushed and not our best efforts.Better in a later issue than not at all.

Not to be pushy, but what's with not raising the pay of us writers for 20

years (or more.)? At my real job, our pay rates have been frozen for two

years and you should hear the complaints!  The cost of living had never

frozen and the price of the magazines can't have stayed the same for 20

years.

Sherrill I love it!  You are the first person to ever mention that

topic....my mother too sends me gifts from QVC and they are incredibly

unreal!  Last year it was an orange(ugh!) cashmere 100 dollar(I cringe when I

open my closet and think of what I could have used that money for!) sweater

that was  way too small.  I also got a bright yellow fleece jacket from

Victoria's secret that was way too big.  I would have looked like a yield

sign in it.  I really think she is trying to tell me something, but I just

can't figure out what because she  has great taste except for MY gifts.  And

she always leaves the price tags on??!!

Gail, I think you're right, the circulation may have dropped, but from what I

understand, there aren't as many mags as there were a few years ago, either.

I don't know if that matters.  I think they make most of their money from

advertising, so I think the real question is whether their advertising rates

have dropped because their circulation has dropped.  Even more than a raise,

I wish they'd pay us on publication, instead of having to wait so long after

publication.

Tina, I'm LOL!!!  My mother was addicted to QVC, because she couldn't get out

of the house and go shopping, due to arthritis.  I swear, the UPS truck wore

a path to their house.  They knew the driver on a first-name basis.  My poor

dad, he'd come home from grocery shopping or something, and find more QVC

boxes on the front porch.  Drove him crazy.  Mom bought more absolute junk

from there!  I found a lot of it when she passed away, and then it was very

melancoly.   (sp?)  She just loved jewelry, and she sent quite a bit of it to

me, mostly trinket stuff.  Most of it was very UGLY!

Amy - Wow, that's good to know!  I kind of agree with that rule, too - if

after all that time, the writer hasn't tended to her novel, it's almost as if

she's not attached to it.  (And with our projects, whether they're short or

long, we can't stay away from our characters too long!)  I think it would be

nice if all the Bad Girls currently working on our novels would go for it,

only because I really think it would inspire us - the ones who aren't writing

a novel will say,  "Hey, I'm going to try!" and we can urge them on including

each other.  The outcome wouldn't matter, either, but as many of us that can

make Orlando this year would add to the excitement - as well as show that

writers who write for the confessions not only strive for excellence in their

long projects, but in our shorter works, as well!  Straight up:  BGORs are

the most versatile writers going.  Just look at our work for the confessions.

We've got training in nearly every area, and if you look at Gail, who does

sci-fi & literary works, we ain't no chopped liver!  <G>  Whether we win or

lose GH makes no difference, because contests are subjective, but having a

whole family of sister writers makes it much more fun!

Only a suggestion.  If anyone deserves a try with Golden Heart, it's

definitely all of us.  I was telling Debbie this week & she had the same

thought that our little gang is a group of winners.  I think in years to

come, other people will lurk in her and say "SHE'S on this folder?" and "SHE

is, too??  WOW!!"  You watch!

Well, today, I look for BIG purses.  <G>  Ironic, huh!  I find I can fit a

small notebook or paperback in one of these - or BOTH!!!  And I like lots of

Jodi,

My dad was in the service, and my parents lived in a mobile home for about

8 months.  Because they were just a couple, it was a very small one, but the

larger families got double-wides.  They were more like a house.  Isn't it

amazing how many choices of places to live we have to live in this country?

We're thinking about selling our house and buying a cluster home.  I'm tired

of the maintenance.  The only thing that's stopping us is that our kids are

worried about the animals not having the "freedom."  What about mom's

freedom?  Oh, well.  The things we do for our children.

Connie,

You mentioned how nice Jo Ann Ross was on the Series Romance board.  One

thing I've noticed about nice people is that if they're nice before they

become successful, they're generally nice afterwards.  When people change, I

think sometimes it's only temporary until someone knocks them to their knees.

Then they're nice again.  However, I suspect that Jo Ann has always been a

very nice person.  Most romance writers are.

Deb-

We live in a cluster home community, and I love it.  There is a huge

greenbelt area winding through all the clusters (which I don't have to mow or

maintain----there is a God) and the house is bigger than our single family

home we sold.  3 BR, 3 BR, 2600 sq feet total.  It's awesome.  But, yes, you

do have to walk the dogs!  Luckily, ours is on the far end of the community

which backs up to a great little park!

Cluster homes are like town homes, except they aren't in a row and seem much

Jodi,

My hubby and I lived in a mobile home -- a 14X70 for the first 12 years of

our marriage.  Frankly, by the time we moved out, I was absolutely sick of

the thing.  My brother and his wife have a really nice one now.  He's built

on porches and decks and everything.

You don't have any storage space in a mobile home, but I learned to be

clever.  I had stuff under the beds, we put shelves in the closets and

everywhere else we could think of.  When we moved into our house, we couldn't

believe all the junk we'd managed to cram into that place.

Jan - That is so adorable!!!  I think that was one very "sweet", loveable

editor!

Along the same lines, from what Sherril & others have said, some writers get

really bent out of shape over revisions.  Obviously, everybody's different;

some people will take offense ("why should I change my baby for you?") and

others will have a more professional approach, taking whatever the editor

says into consideration & seeing if they can make it work.  Do you (Sherril,

anyone else that has an opinion on this) think that sometimes editors may be

a little careful, not knowing what the author's reaction will be?  I know on

our side, we sometimes let experiences with other editors color our

perception and are careful (afraid we're bothering them with questions, how

approachable they are, etc.).

One thing that I found really eye-opening and that I enjoyed very much was

discussing 2 stories' revisions with Pat (Patti, you, too know this part!

<G>).  I found that we could talk about the plots & characters with only the

story in mind, going back and forth with,  "I think I need to keep this so

that she'll have some depth" for example, while Pat brought other levels into

it which I hadn't seen and found challenging.  I think when that happens,

it's beneficial and in fact, the revisions aren't seen as "what I did wrong"

but "what I can do better."

Those were my observations, and in the end, it was LIKE getting candy corn!

Jodi, my mom and dad sold their home in 1979, and moved into a mobile home.

It was an older one, and when I came back home after 2 years in Arizona, I

swore they'd moved and left me no forwarding address! '-).  I never really

got used to it, or liked it, but I know they are built better now.  Back then

the walls were just made out of that 1/4 inch phoney wood paneling, and no

insulation, and you could hear everything, the TV, the kitchen noise,

everything.  It was a double-wide, and they had 2 of those metal storage

buildings for all their "overflow."  I think that's a necessity, although the

builders were pretty ingenious with putting storage everywhere they could.

Since my dad passed away, I've been trying to sell it, and it's been nearly 2

years, and still not sold, a perfect nightmare.  They depreciate in value, so

be careful there.

Connie, yes, I think the editors sometimes are more careful, trying to gauge

the response of the writer, and really, that's something they shouldn't have

to worry about!  They are just trying to do their job.  I'm reading a new

book "How to Write a Romance and Get it Published," and that is waht the

first chapter is all about, that this is a business, and we have to act

professional.  I'm still amazed at how many people choose to ignore that.

Personally, if I was an editor, and I had an especially hard time with an

author, I'd be much less enclined to buy their next book, and I'm sure that

happens a lot, too.

Hey, girls!!

I missed you all terribly...(Thanks, Amy, for passing on my "hello"!)

I got some excellent stuff for my book...Went on a tour of the Okaloosa

Correctional Institute, got lots of info there....Talked to people at a

museum, the newspaper, etc...But the best (and WORST) thing was the

coincidence that I just happened to run into this guy who overheard me

talking to someone else about the research I was doing, and he began talking

and didn't shut up for over an hour....The good thing was, he was very

informative and his opinions and attitudes will fit right in and give me the

background I need for my book...and they only enforce what I had been told by

my uncle were the attitudes of this town.  The bad thing was, he was

incredibly racist; yes, KKK, and it scared, and angered, the everliving sh**

out of me.  By the end of our "interview", I had a migraine from clenching my

teeth so hard in order to keep from spitting in his face.  I was shaking,

literally, with disgust, anger, you name it...He was so self-righteous, too,

which, (yes, this is a generalization, but I'm going to make it anyway...) I

think, is SOOO typical for people who are SOOOOO stupid and wrong....This guy

actually has a brother whose initials are KKK; is that sick or what??   The

other thing that was amazing to me is all the confederate flag stuff

everywhere, just sold at the t-shirt shops like it's okay...lighters,

tshirts, bumper stickers, hats....

I mean, I'm not naive enough to think that this type of attitude doesn't

exist, but to such a great and obvious extent??????  (Oh, jeez, there goes my

blood pressure.....)  How can anyone be PROUD to be so ignorant and hateful?

God, they played so poorly I actually felt sorry for them.  They looked so

downtrodden.  Trent told me to stop acting like a touchy-feely wuss----they

get big bucks to play so they shouldn't suck, and if they do they don't

deserve sympathy.

That's a man for ya.

Larita,  Did you go on vacation with the intent of doing research for a

novel?  That's such a cool way to spend your vacation time.  Too bad you ran

head on into such disgusting racism, but, you're right.  Some people do seem

proud of having such backward ideas. It's difficult to reconcile with a

civilized society, but it's more prevelant than we like to think.  Where's

your novel set?

Hey gals check out your new RWR on page 13 is a picture of me and Lynda with

two pals in between.  Laura( who Amy and Lynda frequently mention on board)

is sitting next to Lynda.

Lynda is sitting right behind Laura DeVries( who is sitting second from right

on front row). Then next to Lynda is Laura then next going left is another

friend Maggie, then me in light colors.

I wonder the same thing, Connie!  It would be nice if we could let the editor

know somehow that we are willing to rewrite, if necessary.  maybe something

like, "I'm always happy to work with you," or something that sounds

professional in the cover letter.  Of course, then there's always the danger

of sounding as if you EXPECT you'll have to rewrite it...and sending a

negative message to the editor.  It's so hard to know just what each editor

wants until you work with them, but we have to get used to that, right?

Larita & Sherril - I knew someone like that, a co-worker who used to come up

to me even before I had my coffee and start talking in a way that really

ruins the rest of the morning.  He knows I'm Hispanic, so he didn't go there,

but he hit just about everyone else.  The worst thing he said was,  "They

should have all been destroyed during World War II."  After that, I just

avoided him altogether, because who wants to hear that garbage?  I can't see

anyone justifying the suffering that went on in Germany in World War II, a

time that showed the darkest side of humanity.

My mafioso story made it into Oct. TR, but it's at work!  (My manager was

reading it when I left!  <G>  The master mechanic, who fixes our machines,

read it, too!  He said,  "The girl looks hot!")  It's called "Married to a

wrote into TL who liked my large-size model story!  So I had a good day!

Sherril,   I do say in my cover letter that I'm happy to rewrite.  Sometimes

I worry that it sounds negative, too, but mostly I hope it shows a

willingness to act on suggestions.  I once read an article by ByLine's editor

Kathyrn Fanning where she talked about how she likes to give suggestions but

has gotten gun shy after some writers took them the wrong way.  She suggested

that if you value an editor's advice just say so, tell her that you'll take

it in the spirit intended.  So far, I've had great luck doing that and have

learned more than I probably could have in dozens of classes.  Patty

Have to tell you about a few Saturdays ago at the pet store.  A couple came

parrot sang a song, said several things that escape me, but my favorite was

when he said, "I'm a BAAAAAAAD bird!"

Jodi -- hasn't anyone told you about the holiday season in retail?  You keep

saying it will get better in October, and I hate to be the one to tell you

that by the end of December, you will want to sleep for a month!  But I love

it.  Guess I'm a junky for the holiday spirit when you work  retail.

And isn't it the truth that we think more about a rejection than an

acceptance?  Anyone have hints on the attitude shift we need to make to

celebrate our successes?  How many people wish they could write and sell?

When we do succeed it is a wondrous thing -- this should be the event that

sticks in our mind.  Not the other stuff.

Jodi,  I'm doing the same as Larita.  My book is set in Boston, in fact in a

actual Boston neighborhood, but I've renamed the street to one that doesn't

actually exist so I can add my own elements.  I'm blending a lot of real

features of the city and of the real hospital the story is set in with

ficional elements.  I think it gives you the best of both approaches;  being

able to use your creativity to invent realities and being able to borrow from

real life.

If it's not one thing it's another.  We writers can never catch a break, even

when we're getting published.  Maybe somebody didn't get God's story right in

the Bible and he's been publishing writers ever since. (I meant to say,

punishing, but maybe getting published is punishment.  At least in this

case.)

Jodi-

Have you ever read Jenni Cruisie's books?  I'm sure lots of authors do this,

but she's who I'm thinking of off the top of my head.  She made up a city and

I think she's used it in all her books.  I'm sure she bases the descriptions

on a real city, but she just made up another name for it.  You could do that

so if you make some stuff up, no one will ever know.

My novel is set San Francisco and I have to keep going around checking to

make sure I'm describing the places I talk about accurately.  I just

discovered that one of the character's apartments isn't quite like I

remembered, but hopefully no one will be pulling over to the side of the Bay

Bridge to check it out.  Next time I'm definitely making up a city.

after having an affair; he feels guilty and wants to get his wife (who's

plotting to murder him) a gift.  Rosie O'Donnell has a cameo as the pet shop

lady, and she's screaming over all these chattering birds,  "Most men get

their wives flowers when they cheat.  You get her a live animal!!!"

I thought you'd enjoy that, working in a pet shop!

Hi Gals!

Gosh I'm so excited about this........

I'm attending the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers conference this weekend (it

ends tomorrow), and I was fortunate enough to get an agent appointment with

an agent I desperately wanted to meet.  Anyway, to make a long story short,

she wants me to send Luck of the Draw----THE WHOLE THING----and all that I

have done of Unguarded Hearts, and the best part is, she told me she would've

taken it RIGHT THERE had I brought it with me (which they always tell you is

a big no-no)!  Isn't that totally cool???  Of course, I know now that a

request for a full ms doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I'm still

hangin' out up here on cloud nine for a few anyway!

P.S.  Actually, I had two agent appointments.  The other one went

Jodi,

I usually use real lakes, rivers, mountains, etc, but make up the name of the

town.  If you're going to move a real place, then why not just include one of

those 'note to the reader' at the end of the book.  I've seen historical

authors do that if they're changing something in history in order to make

their story work.  I'm willing to forgive a change if the author explains it.

If she doesn't say anything, I'm inclined to think she's just dumb!

As a past Golden Heart entrant, I can give you the scoop, girls.  You enter a

synopsis of the book and the beginning pages, up to a total of 55 pages.  So

if you have a 5-page synopsis, you can enter 50 pages of the manuscript. Make

that the first 50.

I judged last year and it was a lot of fun.  Frustrating, though, because all

you get to do is give one numerical score per entry.  No comments or

anything.  And that's a frustrating thing about entering the contest, too.

When it's over, all you have are these numbers that don't tell you much.  Of

course, if you're the winner, or even a finalist, it's a big deal, Soooo

I'm planning on entering two manuscripts -- one of which is only up to

Chapter 6, so I'd better get cracking!

(Of course, I always hope that some time before December, I'll get a call

from my agent on the two manuscripts I have out there and I won't be eligible

to enter.  Wouldn't that be a kick!  I remember talking to Arnette Lamb once

and she said when she sold her first book, one of her first thoughts was "I

don't have to enter the Golden Heart this year.")

I remember it looked so beautiful, lots of snow, small-town kind of folk, and

Jan - I agree with Lynda.  I don't know if he realizes it yet, but he CAN'T

Connie,

If you were here in Tennessee, I'd tie you down and tear up every little

cigarette in sight to get you to quit smoking.  I told you about my mother

being nearly 100% paralyzed for over 7 years before dying three years ago.

Yes, it was the result of a bad medical procedure, but cigarettes got her

there in the first place.  When my mother was in her twenties, she was told

that she looked like a cross between Natalie Wood and Liz Taylor.  When she

was in her thirties, she looked more like she was in her sixties because of

the toxins she inhaled, robbing her once-beautiful skin of oxygen.  You may

consider this a lecture about the dangers of smoking, but you're a friend,

and I want you to love a long, happy life.  Just think, if you quit now, your

lungs should be clear and the effects the cigarettes have already had on your

heart should be gone within just a few years.  Please!

My mother had a near fatal heart attack two months before her 57th

birthday.  Her MD attributed it directly to smoking.  My mother smoked a half

pack or less a day.  But, when she played cards she smoked more.  It was

during one of these marathon poker/smoking sessions that she "threw a clot"

Her blood vessels spasmed and caused a blood clot.

By the time she got to the hospital, she barely had a blood pressure.

It was touch and go for a while.  The most miserable time in my life.

She and my father quit smoking on the spot.  They gave her medication to

dissolve the clot.  She has been walking 40 minutes or more a day on her

treadmill.  She's in better shape than ever.

Oh, yeah, hard candies(starlight mints have no fat) helped her, too.

But, nothing gave her incentive like the heart attack.  She quit for awhile

after seeing her sister die of lung cancer due to smoking.  Now she says

she'll never start again.

I know the trouble I have with dieting.  I'm sure quitting smoking is

difficult, too.

     Sorry for the lecture.

Connie, I have to add my two cents here.  My dad passed away in 1995, right

before I joined up with all you lovely ladies.  He'd had emphysema for the

past 6 years or so, and I want to tell you, it was terrible to watch a

healthy, vital man reduced to a teather of plastic line that reached to his

oxygen tank.  He smoked for years, but only 1 or 2 cigarettes a day.  I'm

firmly convinced that his disease was caused by second hand smoke from my

mom, who smoked 2 to 3 packs a day for years before she quit.  It would have

killed my mom to know that she caused that in my dad, I'm glad she didn't

know.  Connie, from all of us who love you and care about you, and know what

cigarettes can do first hand, please quit.

so I figured it would pay to go again.  If any of you are interested in

writing for magazines, and have the chance to attend one of these, I would

recommend it!  I spoke with 5 editors personally, and 4 asked to see my

queries and proposals!  I'm pretty excited, and pretty busy trying to follow

up!  Just to meet and talk to so many editors at once is fun...I even talked

with Phil Osborne, one of the editors for Reader's Digest.  He didn't want my

idea, oh well.  He also said something that should make us all feel better

about rewriting...he said one of his writers said "You don't write for the

Digest, you REwrite for the Digest."  He said to expect 2 to 3 rewrites...so,

we are in VERY good company here!

I'll let you guys be among the first to know!  I think this is something,

especially from what I've read in your posts, that has effected at least one

person in our lives that we love.  Phyllis would remember the last time I

quit (I told her about my new habit at that time - 2 cookies with tea!  <G>),

and I stayed off for about 2 months, I think, until I sent the novel to

Silhouette - and then I got all nervous & crazy again!

And smoking did nothing to help, since it got rejected anyway!!!  I don't get

offended at all that you guys encourage me to stop; I take that as concerned

affection, which you can never have too much of!  I hope soon to take your

Funny story about Rich, too - we used to tease around that we were an "item"

at work.  I know his wife, he loves Bill, so it was all a tease.  We were on

the elevator one day with another man, and he said,  "Should we go to your

place or mine?"  I said,  "Is your wife home?"  He said,  "She'll be out

until tomorrow."  I said,  "Then your place it is.  Much more romantic."  We

said this so seriously, the guy got off the elevator saying,  "Oh, I don't

think I should be hearing this!!!"

Sherril,

I used to get migraines a lot--but so did my mother and so does my sister.

It's hormonal, too. Strangely, I found Alka Seltzer will work sometimes when

other stuff won't. (It might be the sodium--don't know.)

Bad Girls:

I have good news and I have bad news.  First the bad news.  Loveswept

rejected me last week.  I was so pissed that on Friday I up and mailed three

chapters to each Kensington and to Harper just for the heck of it.

Yesterday, only four days after mailing the package, I get a call on my

answering machine (this is the good news) from Kensington.  They think my

story is perfect for their new line, Precious Gems.  She said my story was

charming and she wants to read the rest ASAP.   I think 1996 is going to be

my year!

Boy, if the rest of us had that good of news to go with our bad news, we'd

never fall in rejection slumps!!  That's terrific!!

I'm thinking the rest of us REALLY need to move to Colorado -- between you

and Lynda, some of your good fortune (and TALENT) would have to rub off on

the rest of us!!!

Keep us posted!!

Amy,

Congratulations!  Your story just proves that this business is so-o-o

subjective.  Just because one editor wasn't in the mood for your work, that

doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.  It simply means that you picked

the wrong editor the first time out.  Kensington was able to spot the jewel.

Amy - I think that'll be a great story to tell when you get to the next

conference!!!  "I got so ticked off, I just sent my novel somewhere else,

right off the cuff - and it GOT PUBLISHED!!!!"  LOLOL!!!  I like that!!  And

what bad news?  That silly little rejection?  That first editor just made a

mistake.  One day soon she'll see "Love at First Lie" in Barnes & Noble (the

last copy; the rest went like hotcakes!) and say,  "Oh, I hope my boss

doesn't remember this one!"

Gail - You tough cookie, you!!  That's the way to do it.  And you acted fast,

too - I think there's quite a few things that should be removed from the

listings, but sometimes we don't move too quickly!  Good for you!

Patty - that sounds like one straight from the heart!!!  That's probably

going to get in.  And you can feel the ones that are going to make it, most

of the time, so that's in there!  I don't have any for DI3, but my rewrite is

supposed to hit the February issue.

of keeping us humble!  Did I get a migraine the second day of the conference,

and fly home with it, and was in bed all day Sunday, when I wanted to follow

up on some of my contacts?  Of course!  But, I really am trying to get loose

ends caught up this week, so those editors don't forget me!

TO ALL THE BEST BAD GIRLS: A brief bulletin on our status. I want to thank

you all for flooding me with great stories. I read your stories first. But I

finally saw what we could make this when I wrote the coverlines for

December--SIX of EIGHT coverlines were bad girl stories! They made great

coverlines! Even my creative director commented during our cover line

meeting: "Where are you getting these stories? So fast?"

I just smiled. Felt great. Thank you all for working in this unusual way.

I'd appreciate it if you would E-mail me with story ideas--that seems to have

worked in some cases. Better to write about something I might want, although

I've bought things I never knew I wanted because they were told so well.  I'm

also holding quite a few of your stories because I've run similar things

recently.  I've accepted stories that might not appear for awhile. Keep in

mind that I'm reading them fast & the decision making is way speeded up.

Anyway, thank you all again!--Pavsi                         Subj:    Re:bad girls--the best ever
