Hayes ULTRA 144

V-series ULTRA Smartmodem 14400 is a high speed, high capability modem

that implements the most advanced international and industry standards

with CCITT V.32bis for 14.4 Kbps line speed and CCITT V.42bis for 38.4

Kbps throughput.  ULTRA 144 delivers unique connectivity to SNA, X.25 and

ISDN networks and supports virtually every modem communication application

in mainframe, workstation and personal computer environments.  Customers

using ULTRA 144 receive the maximum 50 percent throughput improvement over

9600 bps in synchronous environments or when transferring compressed data

files.  ULTRA 144Us X.25 PAD supports four simultaneous communication

sessions to packet switched networks and provides transition to ISDN by

connecting analog modems to digital ISDN systems through packet switched

networks.

ULTRA 144 also features Hayes AutoSync for synchronous communciations,

MI/MIC for support of PABX and security systems, and CCITT V.25bis for

synchronous autodialing.  The modem also provides backward compatibility

with MNP 2-5, Hayes Adaptive Data Compression, and LAPB error-control to

provide a migration path to CCITT V.42 and V.42bis.  By supporting Express

96, ULTRA 144 communicates with V-series Smartmodem 9600s, the worldUs

largest installed base of proprietary 9600 bps modems.

MODULATION

CCITT V.32bis - Adopted by the CCITT on 22 February 1991, V.32bis

provides high-speed, full duplex communications at 14,400 and 12,000,

9600, 7200, and 4800 bps.  V.32bis modulation pushes the capabilities of

technology to new levels of complexity so that data communications can

further approach the theoretical limits of transmission on telephone

lines.  Supports V.32bis procedures for fallback to lower speeds during

the initial connection, and V.32bis Rate Re-negotiation to allow rapidly

fallback to lower speeds and step up to higher speeds based on line

conditions.

CCITT V.32 - Adopted by the CCITT in October, 1984, this standard is now

becoming the mainstream business standard for high speed modems,

overtaking CCITT V.22bis.  CCITT V.32 provides high-speed, full duplex

9600 and 4800 bps communications.  Supports V.32 Automode procedure and

EIA/TIA IS-63 for fallback from V.32 to lower speeds.

Express 96 - A modulation that enables ULTRA 144 to communicate at 9600

and 4800 bps with Hayes V-series Smartmodem 9600s, the worldUs largest

installed base of proprietary 9600 bps modems.  Express 96 is a Hayes

proprietary modulation that simulates full-duplex 9600 bps operation.

(Express 96 was formerly known as Hayes fast turnaround RPing PongS

protocol.)

International Data Transmission Standards - In addition to CCITT V.32bis

(14,400 bps) compliance, ULTRA 144 supports V.32 (9600 and 4800 bps),

V.22bis (2400 bps), V.23 (1200/75 and 75/1200 bps), V.22 (1200 bps),  and

V.21 (300 bps) transmissions.

Industry Data Transmission Compatibility - ULTRA 144 also supports

communication with 103 (300 bps) and 212A (1200 bps) modems.

ERROR CONTROL

CCITT V.42 - Supports standardized, point-to-point error-control

communications using the CCITT V.42 LAPM (Link Access Procedure for

Modems) protocol.  CCITT V.42's alternative protocol provides backward

compatibility with modems using MNP 2-4.

V-series LAPB - ULTRA 144 provides error-control compatibility with the

installed base of V-series modems using Link Access Procedure Balanced

(LAPB).  In addition, LAPB provides link-level error-control for access to

Packet Switched Networks using X.32 (Dial X.25).

DATA COMPRESSION

CCITT V.42bis - CCITT V.42bis international data compression standard for

use by modems incorporating the V.42 LAPM error-control standard provides

compression capabilities to 4:1 enabling ULTRA 144 to achieve throughput

to 38.4 Kbps.

Hayes Adaptive Data Compression (ADC) - ULTRA 144 implements ADC with the

early installed base of V-series system products to attain compression

capability to 2:1 for throughput up to 19.2 Kbps.

MNP 5 - ULTRA 144 provides a migration path to V.42bis data compression

by supporting backward compatibility with modems using MNP 5 for up to 2:1

compression.

TELEPHONE LINE INTERFACE

Dial-up Line - Provides pulse or tone dialing out and auto answering for

Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) operation.

PABX and Business Line Support - ULTRA 144 operates in a variety of PABX

environments and has selectable features for operation with business

telephone lines.

Leased Line - Two-wire leased line communication is supported by ULTRA

144.

PACKET SWITCHED NETWORK CONNECTIVITY

CCITT X.32 Standard - Supports X.32 (Dial X.25) standard for dial-up

compatibility with Packet Switched Networks worldwide.

Error-Control - Supports either point-to-point or point-to-multi-point

communications using X.25 Packet Switched Networks.

Triple X PAD - ULTRA 144 provides a Triple-X PAD (Packet

Assembler/Disassembler) in the modem by implementing 1988 versions of

CCITT X.3,  X.28,  and X.29.

Hayes AutoStream -  Supports up to four simultaneous virtual sessions

using the Hayes AutoStream protocol to support and manage the sessions.

Economical Telephone Network Transition to ISDN - ULTRA 144 supports an

X.25 PAD to use X.25 packet switched networks as gateways for connections

between analog modems and digital ISDN systems.

Smartcom III Communications Software - With Smartcom III communications

software, users are not required to learn PAD commands.  The program

allows easy set up as well as stored configuration for calling up CCITT

X.32 (Dial X.25) networks.

MODEM CONTROL AND OPERATION

Hayes Standard AT Command Set - Full support for this industry standard

enables ULTRA 144 to operate with the large installed worldwide base of

communications software.

Hayes Escape Sequence with Guard Time - Allows the modem to reliably

escape from the on-line mode of operation (receiving/transmitting data) to

the command mode (interpreting the Hayes Standard AT Command Set) without

being accidentally triggered by transmitted data.  U.S. Patent 4,549,302

was granted to Hayes on October 22, 1985.

Automatic Feature Negotiation -  ULTRA 144 automatically negotiates with

other modems to analyze all features available (modulation, error-control,

data compression, etc.) to establish the most efficient communications

session.  This powerful capability is implemented transparently, making

ULTRA 144 exceptionally easy to use even though its feature set offers a

wide range of capabilities and communications options.

Automode - Procedures defined in CCITT Recommendation V.32 that allow

modems with both V.32 and V.22bis modulation to reliably interwork with

other modems which have either or both of these modulations, at the

highest speed in common between the modems.

Rate Re-negotiation - Procedures defined in an appendix to CCITT

Recommendation V.32bis to allow the modem to change the modulation speed

based on the amount of noise present on the telephone line.  The

modulation speed is decreased as the line worsens and increased as line

conditions improve.

Automatic Speed Buffering - Allows a V-series modem to provide a fixed

speed interface between the V-series product and its DTE (mainframe,

mini-computer, or PC).  This enables the V-series modem to communicate at

varying speeds with other modems while communicating at a fixed interface

speed if required by its attached DTE.

Flow Control - Works with systems equipped with flow control to manage

the interface between the modem and the system to control buffers and

preserve data integrity, preventing inadvertent data loss between the

modem and the system.

MI/MIC - Allows a system such as a PABX or a call back security system to

instruct the modem to go off hook and establish a call.

CCITT V.25bis - The modem supports CCITT V.25bis asynchronous and

synchronous communications when required by a host or an international

regulatory agency.  The modem can be controlled through an optional

command set supporting the CCITT V.25bis international standard for

asynchronous and synchronous autodialing.

TRANSMISSION MODES

Asynchronous Hardware Mode - Supports standard asynchronous

communications for dial-up communications with value added networks,

on-line services, and personal computers.

Synchronous Hardware Mode - The modem supports SDLC, HDLC and Bisync

synchronous transmission for connections to mainframes and mini-computers.

A PC using a synchronous adapter card is also supported.  In addition,

the modem supports several methods of synchronous autodialing, including

CCITT V.25bis.

Hayes AutoSync -  ULTRA 144 can use the system's standard asynchronous

communications port for synchronous communications, eliminating the

additional expense of a synchronous adapter card for

SDLC or Bisync.  This convenient feature brings both asynchronous and

synchronous data transfer capability to your system in one communications

device.
