FAQ - Sources for PinBall Manuals and Schematics
========================================================================
Often times dealer have older machines of interest for a reasonable price
but may lack setup manual or a schematic for the machine. With older
electromechanical machine, you could expect to at least have a schematic
or "coil" drawing to help locate problems. With newer electronic machines
there are many options that can be enabled by applying the proper jumpers
or setting the proper control switch or register. These are hard to
reverse engineer so a setup manual is important. The latest games
have the feel of a complex computer product and a manual is a must.
The purpose of this FAQ is to put into one place a source of manuals and/or
schematics held by reader of this group. I have also added other sources
when I could locate them who might also have schematics or manuals.
A few common sense rules apply when requesting a copy:
Except for the publisher AMR which is in business, manuals are made
available as a favor to other newsgroup readers.
Prices are approximate, you should understand that
machines with extensive setup options have a manual with many pages.
Some manuals have extensive engineering drawings
of playfield and backbox assemblies and may include many pages of fold-out
schematics. Earlier machines have large sheet schematics and perhaps a
few pages of setup and maintenance instructions. Copying takes time.
Consider what the commercial costs of xeroxing a manual or schematic
would be. Unless someone has access to a free xerox machine they may
be paying commercial rates to copy the manual or schematic for you.
Be reasonable! Most people are happy to supply someone with a copy of
their manual or schematic but imagine their attitude if
they receive a dozen requests at once! Please don't ask for overnight
service! Xeroxing is usually done on a spare time basis and may take
a few days to complete.
Your best bet is to contact the person and see if they have time to
make a copy right now. Also, as people move around they may loose net
access or get a different address. Checking the address out first
would be a good first step.
-----------
The sources listed below are people who have been kind enough to
make their manuals and schematics available to help other net readers.
I have also included manuals and schematics currently advertised by
AMR Publishing PO Box 3007, Arlington, WA. 206-659-6434. They have
a number of early EM schematics and manuals. Prices are as of June 1992
and should be validated with AMR before ordering.
If the machine you need manuals/schematics for isn't on our list then
there are two other sources you might try. The first is the members of
the Pinball Arcade Preservation Society (PAPS) that maintains a list of
people with different machines. This list is maintained by
sjc@pooky.udev.cdc.com and they invite new members to list with them.
I was also notified of a British Society of Pinball Owners who are said to
have manuals and schematics for a few pounds.
For recent machines such as TAF, HSII, T2, Dr. Who; manuals are available
from the manufacturer if you can't find them elsewhere.
If you would like to contribute to this list or know of other sources
for schematics or manuals please let me know by e-mail hal@gateway.mitre.org
