When I was in Israel in 1970, I was sitting on my porch one evening,
just sort of staring into the last remnants of the sunset when I saw a
group of lights appear - 4 yellow/orange lights and one red.  The were
pretty much in a horiozntal line with the red one on the right, and
moved as a group, with some varying in the distance between them.

They zipped back and forth for a while, then the red one swooped
(i.e.  followed a curved path) onto the trailing yellow light and
apparently consumed it (the yellow light disappeared and the red light
resumed its position).  This was repeated perhaps 30 seconds to a minute
later, and again, until all the yellow lights were gone.  Finally, the
red light faded out, and I was just sitting there wondering what I had
just seen.

Ten minutes later, I got my answer - the school bus with the kibbutz's
kids pulled into the parking lot near me, with (you guessed) four yellow
lights along the top on one side, with a red light at the back.  It's amazing
what an inversion layer will do.
