Susan Foreman is a very strange pupil of Ian and Barbara's at Coal Hill
School. After making enquiries into her home background the two teachers
decide to check on her themselves. They follow Susan to her "home", an
old junkyard and watch as she enters. When they go into the yard to see
what she is up to, there is no sign of the girl. Ian examines an old police
telephone box which vibrates to the touch. Then they are disturbed.
An old man shuffles into view and begins to open the door of the box. The
teachers, hiding behind a packing case, are heard by the old man who then
tries to bluster his way around their statement that they know Susan and
want to discover what he has done to her. Susan opens the TARDIS door and
the teachers force their way into the ship. Susan tries to explain the
situation to her incredulous tutors but they refuse to believe her story
that she and her grandfather are travellers in time and space.
After some argument, the old man states that he will not allow the two
adults to leave and he starts the ship moving.
The TARDIS comes to land in prehistoric times where the crew are captured
by a tribe that has lost the secret of making fire. The Doctor shows the
leader how to make fire by rubbing sticks together but he will not release
them. The crew put burning sticks into skulls found in their cave prison
and escape when the tribe see the skulls and are overcome with fear.
This story is available as a BBC Video.
