THE TENTH PLANET
THE TENTH PLANET. Written by Kit Pedler. 4 episodes.
8th - 29th October 1966.
COMPANIONS:- Polly and Ben.
It is the late 1980s. The TARDIS arrives at the South Pole Space Tracking
Station, Snowcap Base. A new planet has arrived in the solar system, Earth's
twin planet of Mondas, home of the Cybermen.
The Cybermen are a race of humanoid creatures who have gradually replaced
parts of their bodies with artificial equivalents, becoming cold-blooded,
logical machines in the process.
Mondas is coming nearer to Earth and draining the worlds' energy. The
Cybermen take control of Earth and plan to evacuate the population to
Mondas to start a new generation of Cybermen. They also plan to detonate
a huge bomb at the South Pole thus destroying the Earth before Mondas
absorbs too much energy and explodes.
Ben outwits them and before the Cybermen can infiltrate the base, the
energy build up becomes too great and Mondas is destroyed. Without power
from their home planet, the Cybermen die.
Exhausted by recent events, the Doctor collapses to the floor of the
TARDIS. A strange metamorphosis begins.
This marks the end of William Hartnell's time as the Doctor and is also
the first Cyber story. The script was co-written by Pat Dunlap (episodes
one and two) and Gerry Davis (three and four).
Episode four of this story was taken from the BBC after it was lent to
the children's programme "Blue Peter" in 1973. As a consequence, the only
footage the BBC has of the final part is the regeneration sequence.
