A monthly guide to new and upcoming Atari ST games
              --------------------------------------------------
                             Edited by Zenobot
                             -----------------
                         A CyberSysTek Publication
                         -------------------------
                            Quote Of The Month:
                            -------------------
"My very busy schedule as mayor of the City of Los Angeles
would not permit me at this time to give that question
the very thoughtful and detailed answer it deserves."
(Mayor Tom Bradley, replying to a man who wrote him and asked
for his prescription for peace, about 2 month ago...)

 -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

                               Z editorial:
                               ------------

"Not guilty, not guilty, not guilty, not guilty, not guilty, not guilty..."
And it all went downhill after that here in beautiful extra crispy L.A.
The whole thing was totally unexpected. No one could have foreseen it.
And it's not quite over yet...

On a happier note, I have finally taken the plunge and am writing reviews
and articles for an Atari print magazine, AtariUser International.
My first contribution is the F1 Grand Prix review in the May issue, but the
last paragraph, which contained all the tech data as well as my name, was
accidentally dropped. I hope things go better in the July issue.

See y'all next month.

The One For ST Action?

----------------------
Back in the mists of time, there used to be a British magazine called The One
which covered the ST, Amiga, and PC. It caused no end of confusion, mostly due
to its incredibly imaginative name. One typical example of said confusion:
Mr. ST gamer: "Do you have The One?"
Mr. ST dealer: "Which one?"
The magazine also had the annoying tendency to arrive in the US rather late,
so that if you went to pickup, say, the April issues of ST Format or ST Action,
the newest issue of The One would be March.
Then, the magazine was split into 2 publications around May 1991:
The One For ST Games, and The One For Amiga. It still arrived late...
Also, the ST magazine seemed to be a virtual reprint of the Amiga One.
Well, all that is about to come to an end.
ST Action is taking over The One For ST Games, starting with the May 1992
issue. This will make ST Action a whole lot better.
For one thing, they will now have decent 'Work In Progress' articles on
game design teams and their new projects. It will also come out on time.
And there won't be anymore Amiga crossover, like that review of Microprose
Formula 1 Grand Prix for the ST in the November '91 issue, eventhough the game
was released in April '92!!
I know my budget loves this new development!
So, to summarize:
last issue of The One For ST Games, April '92,
first issue of ST Action incorporating The One For ST Games, May '92.

Mario Freed From Oppressive Nintendo Regime, Maybe...
-----------------------------------------------------
(Time to haul out the old "good news, bad news" cliche again)
Good news: Nintendo has actually licensed the Mario character to another
software company beside itself, Mindscape in this case.
Bad news: it's only for educational stuff and for MS-DOS machines.
Oh well...

Mirrorsoft Crash Survival Update:
---------------------------------
--Fire And Ice (Graftgold), now under the Renegade (UK) label.
--Lure Of The Temptress (Revolution Software), picked up by Virgin (UK).

Digitek (US):
-------------
--Big Business, by the same team who brought us Prime Time. You are put in
charge of a large company and must make all the necessary decisions and
transactions. A very silly look at business. Mouse-driven, digitized sounds.
You also get an older game called Wall Street as a package deal.
--Tie Break Tennis, previously released by Magic Bytes (DL).
--------In the works:
--Dinowars, educational arcade game. July '92.
--Hill Street Blues, you get to run the whole station. Also runs in
monochrome. Originally released by Krisalis (UK).

Dinamic (SP):
-------------
--Narco Police, 3D tactical shoot'em'up. Good graphics, good animation, good
sound effects. You control 3 groups of SWAT soldiers and you're infiltrating
a drug dealer's underground complex. Very unusual. Joystick response is slow.
--------In the works:
--Arctic Moves, snow version of Army Moves/Navy Moves.
--Mega Fenix, an updated version of that ancient Centuri coin-op classic,
Phoenix. A blast from the past!

The Disc Company (FR): (No more ST products.)
----------------------

----------------
--Beastbusters, SNK coin-op conversion. Like Operation Thunderbolt with

DS only. Good for developing management skills. Remember to kill the virus
on Disk 2 (the data disk).
--Hunter, 3D polygons adventure simulation. Fixed perspective (as in Virus).
Mission-driven. Grab assorted vehicle and hardware to complete your various
assignements. Cool in a Damocles sort of way... DS only.

example of Japanese Game Design 101. It's an alright shoot'em'up... DS only.

(UBI Soft), World Class Leaderboard (Access), and Continental Circus (Virgin).
--The James Bond Collection, contains Licence To Kill, Live And Let Die, and

Sluggish controls. Hardly worth the $70 asking price.

1 meg enhanced. Realistic area lighting effect: you can only see what's in
range of your light source. Anime-style character graphics.
--Super Heroes, contains The Spy Who Loved Me, Last Ninja 2 (System 3),
Robocop (Ocean), Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade Action Game (Lucasfilm).
--Super Space Invaders (Kremlin), conversion of the Taito coin-op.
The first wave looks normal enough, but after that, it's gimmicks galore!!!
Expanding invaders, add-on weapons, cattle rescueing, end-of-level ships...
--TNT 2, contains Hard Drivin' 2, Badlands, Hydra, S.T.U.N. Runner, and
Skulls & Crossbones.
--Virtual World, contains Driller, Total Eclipse, Castle Master, and The Crypt.
--------In the works:
--Championship Manager, soccer.

Probably a mouse-driven strategy game.
--Euro Football Champ, soccer.
************
Tengen (UK): (Conversions of Atari Games coin-ops.)
------------
--Pitfighter (Tech), wild and wooly fighting game with all-digitized graphics.
Looks a wee bit blocky. DS only.
--Race Drivin', the outrageous Hard Drivin' sequel. The Super Stunt Track
will bring you to your knees! 1 meg usage, STE enhanced, DS only.
--Thunderjaws, sideview scrolling shoot'em'up. Conversion of the coin-op
sequel to Rolling Thunder. The Thunderjaws coin-op wasn't that great to begin
with, and this game doesn't improve on it; it's actually worse.
The sprites are real slow. Avoid it.
************
Respray (UK): (Domark's budget label.)
-------------
--APB (Tengen).
--Hard Drivin' (Tengen).
--Licence To Kill.
--Shufflepuck Cafe (Broderbund).

Missions include tank busting, airdrops, bombing, aerial recon, and CAPs

Arcade Masters (UK):
--------------------
--Volfied (Arcade Masters), Taito coin-op sequel to Qix. Even has powerups!

If it ever gets released, that is...

Gonzo Games (UK):
-----------------

to War In Middle Earth (Melbourne House). Needs 1 meg.

A small glossary of game description terms:
-------------------------------------------
--Adventure simulation: a graphic adventure where the environment is simulated
with 3D polygons and/or sprites, and you move inside it. Examples: Damocles,
Infestation, Corporation, Interphase, Castle Master, Cybercon III, etc...
--Beat'em'up: legs-flyin' karate-choppin' two-fisted action-packed action!
--CRPG: computer role-playing game. People have been arguing over this term for
years. Some people believe there's no such thing and that all CRPGs are nothing
but graphic adventures. They are usually the ones who play real RPGs. But since
everybody uses the term anyway, I have to comply.
--Graphic adventure: any adventure that doesn't use a command line as its sole
interface. Examples: quite a lot of stuff really (Sierra, Lucasfilm, ICOM...).
--Hack'n'slash: razor-sharp double-edged slice'n'dice fun!
--Platform: jumpin'/climbin'/runnin'/slidin' action.
--Puzzler: what you play when you want to use your brain, for a change...
--Shoot'em'up: if it moves, shoot it. If it don't move, shoot it anyway.
Usually combined with another game type.
--Text adventure: any adventure that uses a command line as its only interface,
even if it has pretty pictures (The Pawn, all Infocom games except Battletech).
--Wargame: move your armies around. Mouse-driven or text-driven.

--Perspective: sideview, overhead view, cockpit view (1st person), chase-view
(viewed from a camera following your vehicle), isometric (three-quarters).
--Scrolling: sideview scrolling (left and/or right), vertical (up and/or down),
omni-scrolling (all directions), flick-scrolling (jump-scrolls from one screen
to the next), non-scrolling (it just sits there), forced-scrolling (go with
the flow, or die!).

--DS only: shipped on double-sided disks. Single-sided disks can usually be
ordered from the company with a coupon included in the packaging.
--1 meg: one megabyte or more required.
--1 meg enhanced: it works with 512K, but you get a few extras with 1 meg.
--STE: compatible, but doesn't use the extra features.
--STE enhanced: uses the advanced STE features.
--Hard-drivable: installable on hard drives.
--TT: works on the TT. Everything by Sierra seems to.
--Modem support: play over phone lines.
--Data link support: hook up 2 machines (or more) together.
