     INTRODUCTION

Internet-Accessible Library Catalogs and Databases is coauthored by Dr.

Art St. George of the University of New Mexico and Dr. Ron Larsen of the

University of Maryland. Dr. St. George says this document, "began as an

effort to provide additional service to the network community locally.

However, it became apparent that the library resources were of broader

appeal than that."

It contains a listing of over 100 online library catalogs and

databases available within the United States and beyond. It contains

listings of U.S. and international library catalogs and databases,

dial-up libraries, Campus-Wide Online Information Systems, and bulletin

board systems. Each listing gives a brief description of the resource

and instructions on how to access it, as well as places to contact for

more information. Listings include such material as Columbia

University's online library catalog (CLIO), Pennsylvania's State

University online card catalog system (PENpages), and the Colorado

Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL) and its 25 individual resource

listings of libraries and information databases, such as the Metro

Denver Facts database.

This catalog is an ongoing project. If you have any suggestions,

comments, or additions, please send them to Dr. Art St. George by

electronic mail to stgeorge@unmb.bitnet or stgeorge@bootes.unm.edu.

This document is formatted and edited by Carlos Robles of the

California Education and Research Federation Network (CERFnet)

(carlos@cerf.net).

OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE'S AUTOMATED LIBRARY SYSTEM (OASYS)

KITTY.OXY.EDU

The Occidental College library contains approximately 500,000

volumes, and holds an extensive video library and subscribes to

thousands of periodicals and government publications.

In the fall of 1990, Oasys, the library catalog system, was

installed. Its purpose is to easily guide users through the colleges

extensive holdings, making the paper card catalog obsolete.

Instructions:

1. Oasys is reachable through the Internet, type telnet kitty.oxy.edu

2. Type oasys at the resource prompt

3. Type oasys again at the login prompt.

You must be able to emulate a Vt-100 or Wyse-50 terminal in

order to use Oasys. Oasys is open 24-hours per day, 7 days a week.

Occidental College is located in the northeastern hills of Los

Angeles, CA.

Description

The MELVYL catalog is the online union catalog of monographs and

serials (periodicals) held by the nine University of California campuses

and affiliated libraries. The monograph database, which includes records

for books and nonbook materials such as maps, films, musical scores, and

sound recordings, contains over 5.5 million unique titles representing

nearly 11 million holdings at UC, the California State Library, and the

Center for Research Libraries. Collection strengths include agriculture,

dry lands, oceanography, entomology, performing arts (especially film

and television), photography, Californiana, materials on Mexico and

Central America, 17th and 18th century British literature, health

sciences, and science fiction.

The periodicals file, which includes newspapers, journals,

proceedings, etc., contains over 640,000 unique titles representing over

1.2 million holdings from UC, Stanford University, the University of

Southern California, the 19-campus California State University system,

and selected other libraries.

The MELVYL catalog also provides access to two databases of

article citations: MEDLINE and Current Contents. The MELVYL MEDLINE

database contains the current five-year file of the National Library of

Medicine's MEDLINE database, which includes article citations and

abstracts, indexed from over 4,000 health sciences journals. The Current

Contents file, from the Institute for Scientific Information, contains

one year of citations to articles in over 6,500 journals in seven broad

subject disciplines. Use of these files, unlike the books and

periodicals files, is restricted to the UC community.

The "DLA Bulletin" and the "Mynd of the MELVYL Catalog," two

publications describing the online catalog and its development and use,

are also available online. The MELVYL catalog also provides access via

TELNET to other remote library systems on the Internet.

Network Access

The system is on the Internet and can be accessed using the host

name melvyl.ucop.edu or any of four Internet addresses (31.1.0.1,

31.0.0.11, 31.0.0.13, 31.1.0.11).

Who Can Use the Catalog

The MELVYL online catalog and periodicals file are universally

available. Access to MEDLINE and Current Contents files are restricted

under a license agreement to the University of California faculty,

staff, and students.

VT100 emulation is possible but not explicitly present. Logoff

instructions are provided. GLADIS is public access and it does not

require a password for access. The catalog covers the holdings of most

UCB libraries, including the main library, the Moffitt Undergraduate

Library, the Bancroft Library and some 23 branch libraries. The catalog

is complete for monographic holdings from 1977 to the present and

incomplete for monographic holdings prior to that date. We are in the

process of converting older monographic records, so more of these

records appear in the catalog daily. All of the serial titles, both past

and present, are reflected in GLADIS. GLADIS also contains records for

maps, manuscripts, audiovisual materials and computer software.

Circulation information (whether an item is checked out or not) is

available for some library locations (six libraries as of September,

1989).

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY "LUIS"

PACX.ACNS.NWU.EDU

Connecting:

VT100 emulation is supported and logoff instructions are

provided. Northwestern University's "LUIS" online catalog may be

accessed from other academic institutions via the Internet, using

telnet. The library catalog's telnet address is PACX.ACNS.NWU.EDU. Once

connected, press <ENTER> or <RETURN>; you will receive the prompt "enter

class". Type 60, then press <ENTER> or <RETURN> twice. At this point you

will be prompted for a terminal type; VT100 is to be preferred, assuming

your local communications software will provide VT100 emulation.

Pressing <ENTER> or <RETURN> again will provide you the online catalog's

introductory screen.

To sign off, please enter a percent sign (%) at any prompt. You

can then disconnect your telnet session. PLEASE NOTE that the online

catalog AUTOMATICALLY disconnects if there is no keyboard activity

within a two-minute period.

Remote users of Northwestern's LUIS catalog who may be familiar

with other NOTIS-based online catalogs will note some differences in our

implementation. Of particular interest may be NU's provision of

cross-references in the online catalog, a feature that is to appear in

the commercial release scheduled for the end of 1990. This LUIS version

does not provide keyword/Boolean searching, but does offer what we call

"search qualification," the ability of a user to limit an author, title,

or subject search result by any of several elements present in the

coordinated indexes: date, format (e.g., serial, video), other word, or

holding library. Use of this feature is explained in a help screen which

may be accessed by typing an ampersand (&).

Database Scope:

Use ILLINET Online to search over 3 million titles in the

collection at the University of Illinois Library. ILLINET Online also

provides searching access to the collections of over 800 libraries in

the state (over 20 million items.) ILLINET Online consists of two

separate but closely linked systems: LCS and FBR.

LCS is a short-record circulation system, with information about

a book's check out status, location, and call number. It contains

records for nearly everything cataloged at the Univ. of Illinois

Library. LCS also includes records for over 30 other academic libraries

in Illinois. LCS searching is made easy through the LCSgated interface.

Online help and instructions are available by typing HELP when you log

on to the system.

FBR contains more in-depth information about subjects, authors,

titles, and series for books cataloged since 1975 and most serials

cataloged since 1977 (over 1.5 million books) at the University of

Illinois Library. Online help for searching FBR is available by typing

Dial-up Using a Microcomputer and Modem

This feature may be employed by anyone using a microcomputer,

modem, and communications software, whether from their home, office,

dorm room, or from a library. To properly set the communications

software to access the library computer and THOR, set your terminal

(computer), modem and communications software for:

Communication even parity

Settings 7 data bits

1 stop bit

XON/XOFF enabled

Telephone computer (317) 494-9400

Number(s) help (317) 494-2857

Hours: Monday - Saturday 8:00 a.m. - Midnight

Sunday 11:00 a.m.- Midnight

You can dial-up to THOR with a variety of microcomputers and

software. For whatever hardware and software combination you use, you

must learn how to type the IBM <enter> and <clear> functions. This

information can be obtained from the Library Systems Department ((317)

494-2857). The most common combination is an IBM PC compatible computer

with VT100 terminal emulation. For this combination these key

combinations work:

<enter> <ctrl> and <return> simultaneously

<clear> esc O [capital O] p

After connecting to the computer, press <return> several times until the

system responds with the "DIAL:" prompt.

Access from the Internet

Users of any computer connected to the Internet (which includes

most multi-user computers on campus) can connect directly to THOR

without using a telephone line. Different combinations of computer

hardware will connect in different ways, but some common types are

discussed below. If none of these combinations seem to describe your

situation, or neither method works, call the Library Systems Department

((317)-494-2857) for assistance. You might also get help from your local

computer system administrator.

From terminals connected to a UNIX computer:

- log on to your UNIX account as usual

- make sure the TERM environment variable is set correctly

- type, "tn3270 lib.cc.purdue.edu" and press RETURN

From terminals connected to the VM (IBM) computer:

- log on to your VM account as usual

- type, "telnet lib.cc.purdue.edu" and press ENTER

From many off-campus computers on the Internet: - follow the

appropriate set of instructions above - if "lib.cc.purdue.edu" does not

work, use "128.210.9.8" instead.

The system should display the THOR database selection menu. If

anything else happens, or if the system prints numerous extraneous

characters with the menu, disconnect and seek help.

Once properly connected to THOR, you must know how to type the

IBM <enter> and <clear> functions. Users already connected to an IBM

system can use the same keys that they use for their own account. For

UNIX users, these keys are set by their System Administrator for each

terminal type. Frequently, <ctrl> and <j> will work for <enter>, and

<ctrl> and <z> will perform a <clear>, but check with your System

Administrator for the correct combinations.

THOR is an on-line database of information about books,

periodicals, and other materials in the Purdue University Libraries. All

serials and books added to the Libraries after June 1976 can be found in

THOR. Records for older books are continually being added.

THOR is controlled through a set of single letter commands

followed by an equal sign (=). Type the command, your search topic, and

press the ENTER key. Upper and lower case are treated the same. For

instructions on searching, type the search command without the equal

sign. Example: "a" by itself gives instructions on author searching.

Prior to searching, press the clear button until the THOR menu

screen appears. Then select either the BOOK or FILM/VIDEO database to

search.

SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY

VM.CIS.SMU.EDU

Introduction:

SMU is announcing the availability of PONI via the Internet.

PONI (Public ONline Information) is the name for our NOTIS library

public catalog system. The PONI catalog contains over one million

bibliographic entries including over 185,000 U.S. government documents.

SMU has completely converted the shelflist records for all campus

libraries:  Central Libraries, Underwood Law Library, Bridwell

[Theology] Library, and the Business Information Center. Central

libraries include Media Services, Special Collections in the Degolyer

Library, ISEM Reading Room [Institute for the Study of Earth and Man],

undergraduate/graduate collections in Fondren Library, Science

Information Center and Hamon Arts Library.

Accessing PONI:

PONI's Internet address is vm.cis.smu.edu. You must use TN3270

to access PONI.  Instructions for using PONI are clearly described in

the introductory and help screens. PONI is available Monday - Saturday

from 7:30 am to 2 am and from Noon Sunday to 2 am Monday, Central Time.

Once you get access to our distinctive sign-on screen, enter

PONI. Then clear the CICS "good morning" message and enter LUSM. To exit

from PONI press clear twice and enter CSSF LOGOFF.  This should

disconnect your session. If you have problems making connections call

for computer center help at (214) 692-4357 or send an InterNet e-mail

message to HELP@VM.CIS.SMU.EDU. If you have questions concerning the

content of PONI contact Carolyn Kacena at (214) 692-3229 or e-mail at

VB7R1001@VM.CIS.SMU.EDU.

The two clear keystrokes used when exiting PONI are to

ensure that the user is completely out of the PONI application. A single

clear from the introductory screen is also sufficient. The CSSF LOGOFF

will exit CICS and return the user to the SMU VTAM screen or its help

menu, but will not terminate the Telenet session from your site to SMU.

The termination is done at your local site and depends on your local

conventions. You should contact your system administrator for

instructions.

SMU allows view only access to the technical services side of

the NOTIS system, for those who may utilize bibliography software

requiring the MARC formatted record. You should see but be unable to

edit or change the Bibliographic File, Authority File, and Copy Holdings

Record. This may only be of interest to other NOTIS sites, but might be

a useful adjunct to the opac portion.

HOWEVER, if you find that our security has glitched and you see

highlighted elements which you can (or think you can) edit, please

advise Carolyn Kacena as soon as possible!

Remote SPIRES (RMSPIRES) is a means by which users at other

computing sites can search and retrieve SPIRES database records by

sending electronic mail messages containing RMSPIRES commands to the

host site. The responses to the commands and retrieved items are then

automatically sent as mail file to the requestor. These messages are

sent over NetNorth/Bitnet and related networks; there is no charge to

the user for this communication.

Basic Remote SPIRES search commands are:

FIND      performs a search in the index chosen

BROWSE    returns a random sampling of terms within a chosen index

DISPLAY  prints a single entry by its CULREC number

To search the CULDAT subfile from a VM/CMS site, use the following

command syntax:

TELL RMSPIRES AT UALTAVM <command> <index> <term> (IN CULDAT

For example,

TELL RMSPIRES AT UALTAVM FIND AUTHOR RABIER (IN CULDAT

To see what terms are in, for example, the subject index, type:

TELL RMSPIRES AT UALTAVM BROWSE SUBJECT (IN CULDAT

RMSPIRES will return:

CANADIAN

CONTRACTS

ETHIOPIA

PERMANENT

RESPONSIBILITIES

If the CULDAT record number assigned to a dataset is known, you may:

TELL RMSPIRES AT UALTAVM DISPLAY 893 (IN CULDAT

and RMSPIRES will return a message displaying the record for

"Euro-barometer 9: employment and unemployment in Europe" (CULREC 893)

*From a non-VM/CMS site*, send a single-line message to RMSPIRES AT

UALTAVM where the message syntax is:

<command> <index> <terms> (in CULDAT , as in:

FIND LOCATION UBCDL (IN CULDAT

The right-hand search truncation character for all indices is: '?' For

example, typing:

FIND T CANAD? (IN CULDAT

will locate all items with titles containing the words Canada, Canadian,

Canadians, etc.

Boolean searching using AND and OR is supported.

To obtain further information about the CULDAT database, type:

TELL RMSPIRES AT UALTAVM EXPLAIN CULDAT

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK

131.202.1.2

The University of New Brunswick is pleased to announce that our

online catalogue, known as PHOENIX, is now available over the Internet.

To access PHOENIX, TN3270 to unbmvs1.csd.unb.ca (131.202.1.2). A

screen will appear with a menu of choices. To search PHOENIX choose

option 8. (Other functions will require a UNB account.) The first

PHOENIX screen will appear.

To disconnect, use your TN3270 software to drop the connection.

Or, from the PHOENIX command line, type Stop<cr>. A screen will appear

giving further directions. Note: you should know what key is mapped to

the CLEAR function. This will be different for each software package but

Ctrl-Home may work.

Access is restricted to three simultaneous users from the

Internet.

You will be logged out automatically after five minutes of

inactivity or if your session exceeds thirty minutes.

PHOENIX was a joint project by the library and UNB's Computing

Services Department. It was developed in the period 1979-1980.

PHOENIX searches can be done using either the Menu or Command

modes. Initially, the user is placed in the Command Mode but can switch

to Menu by typing Menu<cr>. Returning to Command Mode is accomplished by

pressing the Pf3 key.

Searching in Command is accomplished with the "s" command. Set

results are shown through the use of the display command. The format is

d set# format range. Typing d5l 1-5 would display records 1-5 of set

number 5 in the long format. Formats available are (s)hort, (m)edium,

(l)ong, (t)itle and x for MARC.

Browsing of indexes is also possible in Command mode.

PHOENIX consists of a number of databases. Most are full MARC

format. The major exception to this is ENLIST. This database is

maintained by the Engineering Library. Brief records are provided for

all Engineering Library books, theses, pamphlets, microforms and some

journal articles. In addition, some faculty members and special

libraries within Fredericton maintain their collections using ENLIST.

Browsing is not supported in ENLIST.

The University of New Brunswick is one of Canada's oldest

institutions of higher learning, with roots dating back to 1785. It

offers degrees in administration, arts, computer science, education,

engineering, forestry, law, nursing, physical education and science. The

Harriet Irving Library and the branches at Engineering, Education and

Science and Forestry have a number of strengths which may be of interest

to Internet users. We have a particularly strong collection in Canadian

Maritime Provincial history, including Loyalist history. (Not all

Loyalist materials are in PHOENIX. Send enquiries to HILDER@UNB.CA) UNB

is also a Canadian and New Brunswick government documents repository.

GovDocs enquiries may be sent to LS09@UNB.CA.

The University also has a growing and vibrant campus in Saint

John. Their library is called the Ward Chipman Library and its catalogue

is searchable from PHOENIX by typing BEGIN WCL. Science Fiction fans may

be interested in viewing their strong collection of this type of

material.

For more information use the online help facility or the online

lessons. E-mail enquiries may also be sent to SLOAN@UNB.CA.

UNIVERSITY OF KONSTANZ

POLYDOS.UNI-KONSTANZ.DE

POLYDOS.UNI-KONSTANZ.DE is the machine of Univ. Konstanz'

library, running KOALA, a proprietary online cataloging/database

software.

KOALA may be used to scan the library's inventory of about 1.4

million volumes (no journals yet) for a given volume, using

(combinations of) about a dozen different search criteria, such as ISBN,

ISSN, authors' names, title etc.

The user interface is TTY-like and KEPT ENTIRELY IN GERMAN. It

features an online help system, and a rudimentary message handling

facility to contact the database managers.

KOALA can be reached via telnet to polydos.uni-konstanz.de

(134.34.3.5), on ***PORT 775***, during library opening hours (8:00 to

21:30 local time on Mon to Fri, 9:00 to 19:00 local time on Sat.).

There are a few technical limitations to using KOALA: - the

machine is quite slow (and suffers from overload) - the number of KOALA

sessions running in parallel is limited (currently to 9)

     ISRAEL

INTERUNIVERSITY COMPUTERIZED CATALOG SYSTEM--ALEPH

Access to the InterUniversity Computerized Catalog System, known

as ALEPH (Automated Library Expandable Program - Hebrew university) is

available via TELNET. ALEPH is a fully distributed catalog system, that

is interconnected via DECNET.

There are seven universities in Israel:

Bar-Ilan University

Ben-Gurion University

Haifa University

Hebrew University

Technion

Tel Aviv University

Weizmann Institute of Science

Each university runs its own catalog system but all catalogs are

interconnected via ALEPH and users can switch from one catalog system to

another once they are inside the ALEPH system. DECNET handles the switch

transparently.

To gain access to any of the systems, you must TELNET to any one

of the following systems:

ALEPH.BIU.AC.IL          132.70.9.36

TAUVAX.TAU.AC.IL                        132.66.32.6

ALEPH.HUJI.AC.IL        128.139.4.207

WISLIB.WEIZMANN.AC.IL    132.76.64.14

LIB.TECHNION.AC.IL                      132.68.1.20

LIB.HAIFA.AC.IL          132.74.1.100

The userid to use is ALEPH.  No password is required.  The

initial menu you will receive will look like this:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Terminal selection

1.  Visual 55/65 (block mode, Latin only, unless terminal has Hebrew

    chip installed)

2.  VT100 (Latin only)

3.  VT102 (Latin only, unless accessed using Israeli ALEPH KERMIT)

4.  Visual 220 (block mode)

5.  TTY (Latin only)

9.  PC (used with special block mode ALEPH emulator)

10. Elbit DS2000

11. VT220 protocol (VT220,VT320,VT340,VT420,V603, etc.  Latin only, unless

    terminal has Hebrew chip installed)

Terminal types for standard terminals (displays Latin, Hebrew, Arabic,

etc.)

=============================================================================

17. VT320

18. VT420  (Hebrew implementation by 22-Jan-1990)

19. Visual 603 (Hebrew implementation by 10-Feb-1990)

(17, 18 and 19 support ALEPH soft fonts)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aleph supports use of soft fonts (terminal types 17,18,19) if

you have a standard VT320, VT420 or Visual 603 with DEC multinational

European standard chip. Languages available include Hebrew and Arabic

(Greek and Cyrillic will be added in the future. Note that Hebrew and

Arabic are not implemented for all three terminal types (see Terminal

Selection screen above). Terminal types 1 and 4 use a Hebrew chip

specially adapted and only available in Israel. Terminal types 3 and 9

use public domain diskettes available in Israel. If you have a VT220

protocol terminal with a standard Hebrew chip using standard HASCII

mapping you can access Hebrew. The Hebrew used is "Israeli 7-bit ASCII"

(96-122) and not IBM 8-bit ASCII or IBM EBCDIC Hebrew.

To change the language of conversation (e.g. from English to

Hebrew) type a question mark "?" when inside an ALEPH screen.

If you are accessing the system via TN3270, use "5" as your

display method.

The next menu you will probably see is:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Function selection

1.  Logout

2.  Online Aleph Functions + Iutil

3.

4.  Redefine terminal type

5.  Show batch log

6.  Upload offline Circulation records (PC only)

7.  Show Batch execution queue and Print queue

8.

Select from menu :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Select #2.  This will place you into the ALEPH system. Some

Aleph systems may bypass this menu and place you directly into the Aleph

system. From here you can begin your searches.  To leave the ALEPH

system from any menu issue the command STOP and you will return to the

"Function selection" menu where you can select the "1" option to Logout.

Sample Search menu:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

        B O O L E A N    S E A R C H -  type  BS and press ENTER.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

               C A T A L O G    S E A R C H

Search codes: Direct access:

AU - Authors          WAU - Words (Corp)      B  - Bibliographic record

TL - Titles          WTL - Words (Titles)    H  - Holdings

SH - Subjects        WSH - Words (Subjects)

CN - Call Number      WSN - Words (Series)

The Library you are searching in is displayed on top of each

screen. If you want to search in another library - type LB.

TO BEGIN SEARCH TYPE ONE OF THE ABOVE CODES/TEXT, AND PRESS ENTER.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

To return to this screen - type  SE  and press ENTER.

Keying HELP on any screen will display an explanation.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use the LB command to switch from one library system to another,

all the while maintaining your Aleph session.  The switch will be

transparent to you.  During the night Aleph performs many maintenance

tasks that locks certain files.  If you attempt to access Aleph while

the library catalog is locked you will be placed in a demo library named

"DEM".

To call UK OPACs from JANET and other networks: PSS, IXI and the

Internet:

General

The addresses given below are those used to call the OPAC

service: the addresses for other computer services will be different.

In the UK, using a Network Name Server, call the NRS NAME

In the UK, using a simple PAD service, call the NRS ADDRESS

From the Public Packet-switched network (PSS) [see (a) below]

From the PSS Gateway service call the NRS ADDRESS

From the Internet [see (b) below], using the NSFNET-RELAY Guest

PAD service, call the NRS NAME

From European research networks [see (c) below] - call the IXI

            ADDRESS

Ignore the spaces in NRS and IXI addresses (e.g. for Aberystwyth type

000013000007 -NOT 0000 1300 0007)

System prompts and further lines of input needed after calling a remote

service are shown below the address of each entry: ignore any brackets

[] shown in the Login procedure. Follow each line that you type by

ENTER/RETURN.

Warning! Several OPACs do not provide a Logoff procedure: you must clear

the line from your end: make sure you know how. (Typically: CTRL/P then

A, then CLEAR).

(a) To call a service from PSS:

Calls can be made to JANET from the public packet-switched services

operated in most countries, using the PSS-JANET Gateway Service

1.  Call either the Rutherford Gateway to JANET - A22351919169 or the

London Gateway - A21920010069 (The A prefix is normally replaced for

international calls by 234)

2.  The gateway responds with the prompt:

:Please enter your authorisation and address in form:

>(user, password).address

3.  For calls to OPACs on JANET no user or password is required, so reply:

>.address  (Note the .)

3.1  Most services require the numeric NRS address, preceded by a full

       stop

            e.g. >.000008012900

3.2  Janet.News (the Joint Network team's information service) can be

       called as >.news

NISS, the National Information on Software and Services, as >.NISS

(b) To call a service on JANET from the Internet

The NSFNET Relay at ULCC now supports (as of 3.1.91) a guest

Internet-to-JANET terminal access service. This converts the communication

protocols used on the Internet to those used on JANET.  Accounts are no

longer essential.

A full guide to this service can be retrieved by mailing

info-server@nsfnet-relay.ac.uk with the following text in the message:

Request: janetpad

Topic: userguide

In summary:

1. telnet to sun.nsf.ac.uk - currently 128.86.8.7

2. login as janet - in lowercase;  there is no password

3. enter the NRS name of a JANET host when prompted. This MUST be in UK

   order, i.e. uk.ac.janet.news

If you have any comments on the service please send them by e-mail to:

janetpad@nsfnet-relay.ac.uk. Any further enquiries should be sent by

e-mail to liaison@nsfnet-relay.ac.uk.

Email to addresses on JANET from BITNET and the Internet.

The pattern of mail addresses used within JANET is different from that

on many research networks. They are easily converted: just turn the

elements of the node-name around, so that it ends "AC.UK" rather than

starts "UK.AC". For example, queries from a user on BITNET about this

list should be sent to: LIBRARY@CLUSTER.SUSSEX.AC.UK

(c) To call a service from another European research network attached to

    IXI

Users wishing to use services on networks attached to IXI must do so

from a registered calling address.

Please ask your Computing Service for advice, or contact your national

coordinating representative - a full list is in IES News no. 29, 1989

(IES News - the Esprit Information Exchange System, is published for the

Commission of the European Communities, Directorate-General XIII:

Telecommunications, Information Industries and Innovation.)

Printed copies of this list are sent to subscribers to the JANET User

Group for Libraries. Subscribers receive: current directories, the JUGL

Newsletter, discounts on conferences and workshops. Yearly rate 10

pounds: orders to Mrs J. Yeadon, Lyon Playfair Library, Imperial

College, London, SW7 2AZ

Printed copies will be included with Part 4 of "The Guide for Libraries

on JANET". The cost of the Guide is 12 pounds, to cover all 4 parts and

updates. Orders to: Project Jupiter, Glasgow University Library,

Hillhead Street, Glasgow G12 8QE.

Printed copies may be purchased from The University of Sussex Library,

Brighton BN1 9QL, UK

- as single copies: 1.60 pounds (prepaid)

- 8 copies for 10 pounds (prepaid)

- 20 copies for 25 pounds (invoiced)

Complimentary copies will be sent to groups and individuals active in

the development of information services across academic and research

networks.
