The special effects crew of this film were at work about
six days(60 hours) each week. Most of the models were created
at ILM out of brass plates which were etched where lights
were needed. Then, neon lights were placed inside to create a
wonderful glow. At the end of the film, when the explosion
was set of by the Genesis device, a special high speed camera
was used. For an example of the speed, normal cameras at
normal speed travel at 24 fps(frames per second) the camera
for this shot ran at 2500 fps! So fast that on film it took
one minute forty four seconds and in real time it took less
         than one second.

In this film, many of the same ideas were used to do the
effects in Star Trek 2. One of the new ideas was the doglike
pet of the Klingon leader. To do this, Ken Ralston built a
foam latex `dog' and operated it from a small cut away
section of the ship's raised floor. The detailed models of
Star Trek III were made by William Beck, Mike Fulmer, Ira
Keeler, and Jeff Mann. ILM then used a motion control camera
(guided by computer) to move the models in front of a blue
screen. After alot of hard work and editing in an optical
printer ,the models are `spliced' onto a prefilmed
         background.
