REVIEW: MASTERING INSTRUMENT FLYING 2nd Ed. by Henry Sollman  TAB Books 1994
ISBN: 0-8306-4256-0      354 pages paperbound,    $19.95

This hands-on book is perfect for pilots studying for an IFR rating.
MASTERING INSTRUMENT FLYING serves as a complete course that will prepare
you to meet or exceed the Instrument Pilot Practical Standards and obtain
that often elusive IFR rating.

Authors Sollman and Harris are both experienced pilots.  Sollman was an
instrument instructor who spent over twenty years training pilots to pass
the IFR rating.  He developed a ten-day course for IFR training and was
overwhelmed with the response.  The book is not only a basic course for
students, containing the first syllabus of 20 flight lessons specifically
designed to fulfill the FAA requirements, but also a set of lesson plans
with explanations for the Instrument instructor.  Finally, it provides
a handy refresher for the IFR rated pilot while preparing for an instrument
competency check.

MASTERING INSTRUMENT FLYING covers instrument flight, approaches and
departures, weather systems, IFR emergencies, the air traffic system and
a whole lot more.

The revised and expanded second edition covers new developments such as
DUATS, electronic IFT equipment such as LORAN-C and GPS, the most frequently
missed questions on the instrument written test and more.  The text is well
written, clearly and concisely presented.  The authors have done a fine
job in making the sometimes complicated material understandable.  I have found
the TAB PRACTICAL FLYING SERIES to have good, hands-on instructional books
to improve and sharpen flight skills and MASTERING INSTRUMENT FLYING is no
exception.
