You can keep FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS and ELVIS COUNTRY; for my money
"Elvis Is Back!" is the best album-conceived-as-an-album Elvis ever
made. Elvis ... was "coming back" ... from the Army, and for neither
the first or last time he was caught in the archetypal -- for him --
struggle between rock and pop. [It] glows with a sense of rediscovery.
Elvis had been lost, but at least for this glorious moment, he was

The first album after the Army, ELVIS IS BACK! captures him at his
secular best, which is nonetheless moved by gospel undertones. The
sheer intensity of the performances from both Elvis on vocals and
rhythm guitar, and the all-star band (which, aside from the regulars,
includes Floyd Cramer, Hank Garland and Boots Randolph) overcomes any
shortcomings the material might offer. "Make Me Know It," "Fever,"
"The Girl of My Best Friend" (a hit for sound-alike Ral Donner here
and for Elvis abroad) could have been chart-toppers. "Dirty, Dirty
Feeling," "Reconsider Baby," and "Such a Night" are among the very
best -- and "dirtiest" -- numbers Elvis had ever cut. ~ Neal Umphred

His first RCA album. Try to find it in mono. ~ Hank Davis
While RCA had the material, they opted to play it safe and combine
five Sun outtakes with seven new recordings and release the Hillbilly
Cat's first album. This is a great way to begin a career! The best
material here is on a par with the Sun singles. While "Blue Suede
Shoes" is a cultural cornerstone of sorts, hearing Elvis's version of
Clyde McPhatter's "Money Honey" is still, after four decades,

ELVIS TODAY is often cited by writers as Elvis' uncertain return to
his Sun origins. There really isn't that much difference from the trio
that resulted from 1973's Stax sessions, with the lesser tracks being
a bit more substantial. The sound is better but the packaging had
become, at this point, practically offensive: One color close-up after
another, almost all from the ALOHA FROM HAWAII special (or that
pre-bloated period), back covers with no noted or technical data, just
ads for other Presley Product. Still, an album with "Susan When She
Tried," "T-TR-O-U-B-L-E," and a hilariously appropriate reading of "I
Can Help," is worth listening to any time. ~ Neal Umphred

To fill in the blank space between soundtracks (yes, it had come to
that), RCA gathered a dozen leftovers stretching back to 1954 (!) and
assembled this album with a cover that lives up to the title. There is
no attempt at programming a logical compilation, a set that might tell
us something about Elvis. As usual, everything is treated as so much
fodder for the unwashed masses. AND... and this was his best album in

ELVIS TODAY is often cited by writers as Elvis' uncertain return to
his Sun origins. There really isn't that much difference from the trio
that resulted from 1973's Stax sessions, with the lesser tracks being
a bit more substantial. The sound is better but the packaging had
become, at this point, practically offensive: One color close-up after
another, almost all from the ALOHA FROM HAWAII special (or that
pre-bloated period), back covers with no noted or technical data, just
ads for other Presley Product. Still, an album with "Susan When She
Tried," "T-TR-O-U-B-L-E," and a hilariously appropriate reading of "I
Can Help," is worth listening to any time. ~ Neal Umphred

To fill in the blank space between soundtracks (yes, it had come to
that), RCA gathered a dozen leftovers stretching back to 1954 (!) and
assembled this album with a cover that lives up to the title. There is
no attempt at programming a logical compilation, a set that might tell
us something about Elvis. As usual, everything is treated as so much
fodder for the unwashed masses. AND... and this was his best album in
