By 1976 Elvis was recording at home in Graceland, cutting what would
be the final recordings of his career. Filled with bathos and showing
little rock & roll vitality, these remain interesting nonetheless, as
it implied his accepting his age somewhat and attempting to combine
old fashioned, melodramatic soul with contemporary country-pop. While
the pain and decay are evident -- especially in hindsight -- Elvis
could still sing: "Hurt" is excellent, one his best and, on "Danny
Boy," Elvis reaches with an aching falsetto that closes the song,
appropriately. Still, this hardly the album to begin your collection
with. ~ Neal Umphred

Later work, but has its moments. ~ Hank Davis
Presley returned to Memphis, recording thirty odd songs in Chips
Moman's America Sound Studios in 1969, leading to his artistic and
commercial resurgence ("In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds") and
what may be his single greatest album, FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS. From the
first track opens with Elvis" hoarsely shouting "I had to leave town
for a little while..." and then announces -- in no uncertain terms --
that he's back. Brilliant selection of material with Elvis singing
like his life depended on it. (It didn't; his career did.) The
musicians (all regulars from Chips Moman's American Sound Studios)
cook and the overdubbed horns and background vocals are among the most
appropriate ever used on a white singer's record. )Also available on
Mobile Fidelity) ~ Neal Umphred

One half of the imponderably titled FROM MEMPHIS TO VEGAS / FROM VEGAS
TO MEMPHIS, (later issued as a separate album, ELVIS IN PERSON AT THE
INTERNATIONAL HOTEL) captures Elvis from the summer of 1969 while the
exhilaration of conquest was still evident. A nice compromise between
mere entertainment and the revelatory: the first few songs are old
hits to pull you in; the second side opens with a roaring medley of
"Mystery Train" and Rufus Thomas's "Tiger Man" and leads to a
staggering seven minute "Suspicious Minds." The studio album, ten
tracks from the previous Memphis sessions, are a let down and, even at
the time of release, the two-fer concept seemed ill conceived. Had the
best of the rest of the Memphis material been collected on a single
album and titled SUSPICIOUS MINDS, it's possible this album could have
leapt to #1 and outsold the first. ~ Neal Umphred

Elvis was out of uniform in March and laying down vocals for his first
big musical production in April. The confections that make up the
soundtrack for G.I. BLUES were the most trite collection of songs in
his career, with the slight but affecting "Wooden Heart" the standout.
Still, Elvis" enthusiasm makes even the puff listenable; I really
can't imagine even considering listening to this music had any other
singer on the planet recorded them (except Bob Dylan). ~ Neal Umphred

An even lamer attempt at a Hawaiian backdrop which did produce a nice
cover of the old Drifters" number as the title tune and "Return to
Sender," an excellent mid-tempo R&B-ish hit. The ballads are pleasant
though hardly memorable. Elvis is still singing well, especially
considering the material and the arrangements. That would change
shortly. While the movies Elvis made during the 60s and their
accompanying soundtracks did produce a reliable source of income, they
were against Elvis in the long run. The initial enthusiasm that
accompanied even the silliest of plots in 1960-62 was replaced by the
inevitable boredom. The Colonel's response to his boy's growing
disillusionment was to find sillier scripts, reduce the budgets
allotted for, say, other actors and props, and accept songs the
nonsense of which beggars the imagination. Still, during this time,
especially those first few years when a movie meant having some fun,
Elvis also cut a number of tracks for lesser, non-musical films,
including several affecting ballads for WILD IN THE COUNTRY. In 1963
Elvis teamed up with the luscious Ann-Margret, recording some of his
most spirited singing in years for VIVA LAS VEGAS. Had RCA Victor
collected the best of these sessions, along with the standouts "Summer
Kisses, Winter Tears," "King of the Whole Wide World" and "Follow That
Dream," a surprisingly solid album could have been issued. Alas, these
tracks were scattered to the winds, showing up on EPs, B-sides and
budget albums over a period of ten years. If one needs to delve into
this period, an easy rule of thumb is that the further into the decade
the soundtracks go, the less likely they are to please. ~ Neal Umphred

This box is what the first one should have been, with six albums of
unreleased material: Sun outtakes, Elvis's complete television
appearances from 1956, more exhilarating stuff from the "68 NBC
Special." The packaging is a great leap forward, the sound impeccable,
the selections of value both aesthetically and historically.
Recommended to everyone; desperately needed on CD. ~ Neal Umphred
