The beginner is pointed toward the first two gold record sets, which
contain the obvious hits that make up oldies fare, and the not so well
known, such as -- in the case of this second volume -- the smoldering

The greatest hits album by which all greatest hits album need be
measured. Fourteen sides which sold umpteen bejillion records in the
previous two years. The only discrepancy is the inclusion of "That's
When Your Heartaches Begin," which failed to reached the Top 40 as the
flip of "All Shook Up," at the expense of "I Was the One," "My Baby
Left Me," and "Playing for Keeps," each much bigger hits. ~ Neal
Umphred

This third package of gold captures most of the hits from 1960-1962
and is a marvelous album, a model in selection and programming. The
songs are all excellent, Elvis was in a period that is always
overlooked by fans, critics and biographers, the band often cooked and
the production and engineering were flawless. Much of what Elvis
achieved here on songs like "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame" and
"Little Sister" has not been duplicated elsewhere in the field of rock
& roll, although the influences are sprouting up in contemporary
country. ~ Neal Umphred

For those who have been holding out for the definitive Elvis Presley
CD compilation before dumping their old scratchy vinyl, you can now
officially place your garage sale ad.
This meticulous, 5-disc box has finally set to right previous shoddy
repackagings and other travesties. The set contains 140 tracks,
including every master cut by Elvis for the Sun and RCA labels between
1953 and 1959 in roughly chronological order -- lovingly restored to a
sound quality that beams you right back there to the studio -- plus 14
previously unreleased performances.
From the raw, instinctive innocence of his hillbilly-tinged Sun
Sessions to the confident, larger-than-life idol inducted into the
army, The King Of Rock'N'Roll tells the story as vividly as any film
could.
The disc devoted to rarities and previously unreleased material
features both sides of the acetate he recorded as a shy kid in 1953 at
Sun Studios as a gift for his mother. Fans will also find a recently
discovered demo of Fool, Fool, Fool, a song never before available.
The real revelation, however, is four tracks recorded live from Elvis'
first Las Vegas appearance in 1956. The setting may be Vegas, but the
performances were well before Elvis became Vegas -- this stuff rocks.
The set is topped off with a 92-page four-color booklet featuring rare
photos, comprehensive liner notes, anecdotes, and complete 50s
sessionography and discography.
We now wait, with bated breath, for RCA/BMG to complete their
restoration work on the 60s and 70s period catalogues. ~ Roch Parisien

RCA was desperate while Elvis was in the army, so they scraped
together odds and ends and some Sun material. A quaint early album
circa 1959. ~ Hank Davis
A compilation of four of the original Sun sides, five RCA single sides
from 1956 and one song from the LOVE ME TENDER EP, this was RCA's
first efforts at packaging the original Sun singles onto an LP (and,
unfortunately, allowing their engineers to "enhance" the tapes with
boosted bass, added echo, etc). As a package, this album and its
companion, A DATE WITH ELVIS, is a disgrace, the songs treated as
non-entities. There is not a trace of respect for the material or its
history and the five songs per side was a rip-off. But the recordings
themselves are great... ~ Neal Umphred

~ Neal
