Greetings to you all ...
There was a thread running a short while back about the Baghdad
batteries, and so I'd thought I would add in my .02 cents worth (I
hope I am not repeating much of what has previously been said,
since I caught this discussion in mid-thread, so to speak).
The first of these objects were discovered on June 14, 1936, by
the Iraqi State Railways Department during earth moving
operations, and dozens of others have been discovered nearby, in
sites representative of the Parthian period (approx 248 B.C to 226
A.D.) The objects are composed of a oval shaped jar approx 18x9
cm. in size, with a copper cylinder, an iron rod, and some bitumen
crumbs.
A replica was built and tested in 1960 by John B. Pierczynski of
the University of North Carolina. One half volt of electricity,
lasting 18 days, was obtained by using an electrolyte 5% vinegar
solution. This amount of current would be sufficient to
electroplate silver onto copper.
