Mother Nature pt.1

White Rapids National Forest, Colorado

July 14,1994

11:00 p.m.

The round face seemed to smile down on the entire forest.  It's

eyes watching all that was happening on the earth below.

Kendall Mason still could not believe how the moon's surface

looked so much as if it actually had a face.  When she was a little girl,

she and would lie in the backyard of their house while her father would

tell her stories about the moon and the stars.

When Jeffrey had offered to take her camping with him, she

couldn't refuse.  Living and working in New York City didn't give her much

chance to go star-gazing.  She loved camping.

A noise in the trees brought her out of her thoughts.

"Jeff, is that you?" She got no response.  She stood up and walked

over towards the trees.  "Jeff, this isn't funny!  Come on-"  someone

grabbed her from behind before she could finish her sentence.  She let out

a scream.

"Don't tell me you were really scared," said the handsome young

man, still holding her hands.  His black hair had been blown all over his

head by the wind, but still looked good, that never happens to women.

"Jeff!  You stupid jerk," Kendall yelled, trying to get out of his

grip.

"Come on Ken, it was just a joke," he pulled her closer to him,

wrapping his strong arms around her waist.  "You said you weren't afraid

of the dark."

"I'm not.. I-I wasn't afraid," she replied defensively.  "I was

just surprised."

"Yeah right," he bent his head down, looking into her blue eyes,

and kissed her gently on the lips.  "I'll protect you."

"Oh, my hero," she said sarcastically.  He let go of her and

walked over to the fire in front of their tent.

"Looks like we're running low on fire wood.  I saw a pile of

sticks back in the trees.  I'll go get them,"  he turned towards Kendall,

she looked worried.  "Don't worry, I won't take long.  I'll be right

back."

"The only thing I'm worried about, is becoming a victim of your

dumb pranks again,"  she told him.  She sat back down in front of the

orange fire, and looked back up to the sky.

The beautiful clear night they had been enjoying a few minutes

earlier, had now blocked out all the stars with clouds.  The slight breeze

that had been blowing just enough to mess up a one- hundred dollar hair

style, had turned into a heavy gust.

Ten minutes passed, and Jeffrey hadn't returned yet.  As much as

she liked camping, she didn't like doing it alone.

"Jeff?  Jeff, where are you?"  She yelled as she got up.  When

there was no response, she ventured further into the woods.

The trees looked different at night than during the day.

Everything was so black, maybe she was afraid of the dark.  She pulled out

the flashlight that Jeff had bought as a gift in an old gas station on the

way here.  The small beam of light it let off didn't help.  The woods had

been engulfed in fog.

"Jeff?  Where are you!"  She screamed trying to yell over the wind

and the rain that was growing stronger by the minute.  She was getting

scared, she couldn't find her boyfriend and it looked like it was going to

storm.

A loud snap behind her made her jump.  She turned around to see a

large branch break off its monstrous trunk and fly toward her.  She didn't

even have time to scream before it slammed into her, sending her flying

through the air.

She couldn't move, the limb was pinning her down.  She screamed

for Jeff, for anyone, but the wind had grown louder, drowning out her

shouts for help.

Her entire body hurt.  She had hit her head on the ground when she

landed, and she felt tired.  Her eyes began to close, but she fought to

stay awake.  The last thing she saw was a shadowy figure moving towards

her.  At first she thought it was Jeff, but as it moved closer she knew it

was not.

Mother Nature pt.2

Washington D.C.

FBI Headquarters

July, 16, 1994

6:00 a.m.

The basement light lit up and the elevator came to a stop.  Dana

Scully stepped out into the dark hallway.  She yawned, wishing she had

stayed in bed a little longer.  She knew even though she and Mulder

weren't working on a particular case, it would probably be a long day.

She had decided to come in early and finish up the last of the

paper work on the case they had finished a few days earlier.  She wanted

to do it before Mulder arrived, before he could cover both his and her

desks with magazines, files, newspaper clippings, and sunflower seeds.

There were plenty of those things polluting their office already.

She turned the corner, and came to the door leading to the storage

room turned office. To late, Fox Mulder was already there fighting with

the computer on his desk.

"You stupid thing, give it back!"  He yelled at the machine.

"Shouting at it won't help matters, you know," she said, examining

the state of the office.  He must be going for a record on how much trash

one desk can hold.  "Don't you ever throw anything away?"

"Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this

morning," Mulder said, looking up from the computer screen.  "As a matter

of fact, I came in early to clean up."

"Yeah right.  You probably just couldn't sleep, and came in to

work like always," she said. She went over to coffee machine and began

pouring the coffee into her mug.

"So, what's the problem with the computer, this time?"

"I was typing up those reports that are due today, and the

computer erased them," he explained.

"Mulder, I have never met anyone who is so lost when it comes to

computers," she said.  "Here, get up.  Maybe I can find the files."

He got up, and she took his seat.

"Mulder, where's the mouse?"  She asked, looking under the stacks

of paper covering his desk.

"It's over here," he walked over to the wall on the opposite side

of the room.  He picked up the mouse, and took another second to find the

little ball that went inside.  "Here you go."

"Mulder, what's it doing over there?"  Scully asked, confused.

"I got frustrated," he told her.

She plugged it in, and was surprised that it still worked.  She

clicked into some files, and typed a few things.  After about two minutes,

she looked up and smiled.  "Here we are."

Mulder bent over, he couldn't believe his eyes.  How does she do

that.  He sat back down and saved the files, then printed them out.

Scully walked back over to her desk and sat down.  She began to

take a drink of her coffee, but noticed a file in front of her.  "What's

this?

"Uh?"  Mulder said looking up from the newly printed files.  "Oh!

I can't believe I forgot about that.  You see, that's what computers do to

me.  That's our next case."  He got up and walked around to her desk.  He

pushed some papers back onto his desk, then positioned himself on the

corner.

"Twenty-nine year old female found dead in the White Water

National Forest in Colorado.  Boyfriend found her, said he had gone

looking for firewood, came back she wasn't there.  He went looking, and

found her pinned underneath a broken tree limb," Mulder explained, as

Scully read the report.

"So what makes this an X-File.  Looks like an accidental death,"

Scully said, raising an eyebrow.

"Read the cause of death."

She scanned the report, then looked up suddenly confused.  "Water

in the lungs.  Mulder how does someone get that much water in their lungs,

without-"

"Drowning," he finished her sentence.  "I don't know, you're the

doctor.  All I know is that this is the seventh person to die like that in

Colorado over the past year.  And you know what's even weirder, the guy

says that just after he went for the wood, a storm hit."

"What's so weird about that?"  She asked, becoming very

interested.

"What's weird is that nobody else within a ten mile radius of the

campsite reported a storm.  In fact, they report that it was a clear night

with only a slight breeze."

"So what are we going to do, Mulder?"  She asked, getting a little

nervous.

"Do you like camping, Scully?"

She knew it.  "You have got to be kidding.  You are not talking me

into another-"

"Come on, it'll be a nice trip to the forest," he said

sardonically.

"That is not funny," she said as she pushed him off her desk onto

the floor.

"Ow!  That hurt," he said getting up.  "Okay, so we won't go

camping, but we can investigate.  I promise, we'll only go to the woods

during the day."

Mother Nature pt.3

Carrington, Colorado

July 18,1994

12:00 p.m.

"Agent Mulder, Agent Scully,"  yelled a tall, thin man running out

of the town police station.

Mulder got out of the navy blue Taurus, and joined Scully on the

other side of the car.

"I'm so glad you guys are here.  I'm Daniel Brooks, Chief of

Police here in Carrington.  We don't have the man power or the experience

to handle this case alone.  This is a small town, you know.  When someone

gets a speeding ticket, it like a felony up here."

Mulder smiled, he liked this guy.  "Seems you know who we are

already, so how about letting us look over the women's autopsy report."

"Uh, we don't have one.  Don't got a coroner.  Agent Scully, we

were told that you're a doctor, and have experience in autopsies," Brooks

said.

"Who told you that?"  Scully asked with bewilderment.

"Your aunt Carolanne."

"Carolanne?  How do you know my aunt?"

"She owns that cafe over there," Brooks said, pointing across the

street to an old-fashioned diner.  "She moved up here about five years

ago, didn't you know that Agent Scully?"

Scully looked over at the diner, she couldn't believe what she was

hearing.  When her uncle Frank died, Carolanne packed up her things, and

disappeared.  No one has heard from her since the funeral. She had been

heart broken, but Scully never thought she'd move to some small town and

open a diner.

Mulder looked at his partner.  She looked like she was in shock.

"Scully, are you okay?"

"Fine," she said.  She began walking across the street, with

Mulder and Chief Brooks following.

"I'm sorry Agent Mulder, I figured she would have known about

this," Brooks said.

"It's okay."

Scully opened the door to the diner, holding it long enough for

Mulder to grab it.  A short woman stood behind the counter talking to one

of the customers.  She was in her mid-fifties, plump, and had black hair

with gray streaks running throughout it.

"Aunt Carolanne?"  Scully asked, getting the woman's attention.

"Oh my goodness! Dana! Could this be my little Dana?"  The woman

squealed, running around the counter.  She ran up Scully, and through her

arms around her in a warm hug.  Scully returned the embrace, happy to see

her aunt again.

"Aunt Carolanne, I can't believe it's you.  It's been such a long

time.  I've missed you, you should have called."  Scully told her aunt,

who was moving them towards the counter.

"Sit down my dear," she said.  "I'm sorry I haven't called you,

but I couldn't bring myself to talk to anyone from the family.  Oh, I

wanted to, but it just would have reminded me of Frank.  When I heard you

were coming from Daniel over there, I was so excited.  I didn't know how

much I missed you," she explained.

Suddenly, she noticed Mulder standing at the door.  "Oh, I'm being

rude," she got up and scurried over to him.  "Forgive me, Carolanne

Scully, I'm Dana's aunt."

"Fox Mulder.  It's nice to meet you Mrs. Scully," he said, shaking

her hand.

"No, no, my dear boy.  Call me Carolanne, please." she said as

Scully joined them.

"I'm sorry to interrupt Carolanne, but-"

"Don't be sorry, Daniel.  All three of you have jobs to do, and

I'm keeping you from them. Go to it.  Dana, you and Mr. Mulder will be

staying with me, won't you?"

"I don't think so Aunt-"  Scully started.

"Come on, make an old woman happy," she pleaded.

"Of course, Mrs.- Carolanne.  Scully and myself would be

delighted," Mulder told her.

Scully turned to Mulder, at first she was angry at him for

accepting an offer from HER aunt, but she knew he was doing it for her

sake.  "All right, Aunt Carolanne."

Her smile widened even bigger than it had been.  "Great!  Daniel

has the address.  Be home in time for supper."

Mulder smiled, "Yes ma'am," he said saluting her as he walked out

the door.  "By the way, you are not an old woman."

Scully and her aunt were left alone, "Ooh, Dana, I like that boy.

He's smart and handsome."

"Aunt Carolanne, I swear you and my mother have some kind of

contest going trying to see who can set me up the most," Scully said as

she walked out of the diner after her partner.  "See you tonight."

She caught up with the two men, who were now crossing the street,

"She likes you Mulder."

"I like her.  She reminds me of my grandmother, or somebody's

grandmother," Mulder told her.  "You ready to get to work?"

They entered the police station.  It was small, the white paint on

the walls peeling off.  There was an older officer sitting behind the main

desk eating a sandwich, and a man who looked drunk asleep in one of the

two cells.

Brooks walked over to the officer behind the desk, "Deputy Barney

Miller, this is Agent Mulder and Agent Scully form the FBI."

"Charmed," the man said, not looking up from the newspaper he was

reading.

Brooks walked over to another desk and picked up a folder lying on

it.  "Here's the case file, it's not very full, sorry.  You'll have to

forgive Barney, he's not really a people person."

"No problem.  Can you take me to the body, I'll do the autopsy

now," Scully said while Mulder read the file.

"Sure."  He took her to the back into a little room.  There was

only one refrigerated locker in the room.  Brooks pulled the handle, and

the door opened.  He slip out the shelf holding the body.

Scully pulled back the cover, revealing the girls face.  She had

shoulder length blond hair, and was attractive.  Her face was frozen in

fright, it sent a chill up Scully's spine.

Two hours later, Scully came out of the room.

"Did you find anything weird?"  Mulder asked when he saw her.

"What do you mean, weird?"  Brooks asked.

"You know, spooky," he said, giving Scully a smile.

"Not really, except for the water in her lungs, but that's nothing

new.  What were you expecting?"  She asked suspiciously.

"Nothing, just curious.  Want to go check out the campsite,

Scully?"

"Can't it wait 'til tomorrow.  I'm beat," she said, half telling

the truth and half not wanting to go to the woods so close to night fall.

"Besides, my aunt is expecting us, we don't want to disappoint her, now do

we?"

"Of course not," he said, a little relieved at not having to go

digging around anymore for the day.  "Lets go.  Chief Brooks, we'll meet

you at the campsite at 8 a.m. tomorrow."  They grabbed the files, shook

hands with the chief, and left.

"Do you got that address, Scully?  I'm driving, but I'm not quite

sure where I'm going."

She looked at him and smiled, he always did act before he thought.

Who knows what kind of things he could accomplish if he would just stop

and use that genius brain of his.  "Yeah, right here," she picked up her

purse and pulled out the slip of paper that Chief Brooks had given her

before they left.  "It's 13 Old Rapids Road."

"Ooh, 13.  My lucky number.  Can you find it on the map... never

mind," the car turned at the corner with the street sign for Old Rapids

Road.  They drove down the street until their were no more signs of the

town around.  "Here we go, 13."

Mulder turned the car onto a long driveway.  He stopped the car by

the house, and got out to unload the luggage.  Carolanne stood on the

porch waving at them.

Scully went up to her aunt.  "Are you sure this is all right, Aunt

Carolanne?"

"Absolutely positive, sweetheart.  It's not often I get company,

since almost no one knows I'm here.  Gets lonely."

Scully shook her head in agreement as Mulder joined them on the

porch, baggage in hand.

"Hello Fox, it's good to see you again," Carolanne said taking the

luggage from him.

"Aunt Carolanne, call him-" Scully started, but Mulder stopped

her.

"It's okay.  I figure your mother calls me Fox, you aunt might as

well, too."

She smiled, he was always surprising her.

Mother Nature pt.4

Scully and Mulder followed Carolanne Scully into her house.

Scully couldn't believe how much it looked like the house she used to

visit when she was a little girl.

The white walls covered with bookshelves full of the old fairy

tales and classics that her uncle Frank used to read to her.  Pictures

frames with pictures of the entire family feeling them.  Old souvenirs

from road trips Carolanne and Frank had taken.  The house even had the

same furniture as the old one did.

"Make yourselves comfortable.  While you're here, my house is your

house," Carolanne said, leading the agents to the living room.  "I'll take

your things to your rooms, then we'll eat."

Mulder watched the woman go up the stairs, while Scully looked

around the room.

"I just can't get over it," she said, examining a picture of her

own family, taken almost fifteen years earlier.

Mulder turned to look at her, "Get over what?"

"How much this place looks like my aunt and uncle's old house.  I

mean the same furniture, the same pictures, the same books.  It's like I'm

six years old again, here for a visit," she explained.

"Guess she didn't want to forget as much as she thought.  So how

long has it been since you last saw your aunt?"

His question caught her off guard, bringing her back to the

present.  "Oh, since my uncle's funeral, about five years."

"That's along time to be away from your family," he said.

"Yeah.  Remind me again how long it's been since you last saw your

family, Mulder."

"Okay, guess I'm not one to talk," he said, as Carolanne entered

the room.

"Dinner's ready.  Hope you're hungry," she announced.

"Starved," Mulder said, following her into the dining room.

The table was set nicely, all the silverware in it's proper place.

There was a glass vase filled with wild flowers in the center of the

table, surrounded by a bowl of mashed potatoes, corn, and a plate of fried

chicken.

After dinner Scully went up stairs to get cleaned up, while Mulder

joined Carolanne in the living room.

"So, can you tell me about the case you're working on, or is it

classified or something?"  She asked sitting down on the couch.

He joined her, "No, it's not classified."

"So can you tell me about it, Daniel won't tell me nothing.  It's

not often anything interesting happens around here, so I'm curious."

"I'm sure it wouldn't interest you.  A girl died camping in the

forest, it's a sad thing, that's all," he told her.

"If that was all, you and my niece wouldn't be here," she said.

Mulder squirmed uncomfortably, she could tell he didn't want to give her

all the details, he didn't want to upset her.  How sweet.  "Does it have

anything to do with that weird storm the other night."

He looked at her, his face in a look of shock.  "Storm?  How do

you know about that?"

"My dear boy, I only live about a mile from where that poor girl

died.  I'm the one who called the police.  The boy came here for help,"

she explained.

"I was told that no one else experienced the storm.  Didn't the

cops question you."

"Of course, and I would have been happy to tell them about the

storm.  But they didn't ask, so I didn't tell them."

He smiled, he couldn't help it.  He had never met anyone like

Carolanne Scully, she was on-of-a-kind.

"Hey, do you want to see some pictures of Dana when she was a

little girl?"  She asked him, changing the subject.

He was surprised, and wanted to talk more about the storm.  But he

figured he'd have time for that later, how often does he get to look at

childhood pictures of his partner.  "Sure."

Scully came down the stairs, feeling much more comfortable after

have taken a shower and wearing her favorite sweats.  She could hear

laughter coming from the living room, and went to see what it was about.

"Hey, what are you two up to?"

Both Mulder and Carolanne jumped.

"Hello, dear.  Do you feel better?"  Carolanne asked.

"Much," she replied, still curious about what they were doing.

She walked over to the couch.  "Aunt Carolanne, what are you doing?"

"Oh, I was just showing Fox here some of the old pictures of you

as a child."

"What!"  She leaned over the couch and saw five photo albums

covering the coffee table.

Carolanne leaned over to show Mulder another picture, "Aaaugh.

Scully you were so cute, and very clean," he said, looking at the picture

of the cute, red-headed toddler playing with her rubber ducky in the bath

tub.

"Shut up, Mulder," she said getting embarrassed. "Aunt Carolanne,

isn't it a mothers job to embarrass her children?"

"Of course.  Unfortunately, I never had kids, so you your brothers

and sister are the closest thing I have.  Besides your mother never did a

very good job of embarrassing you kids, her albums hardly ever came out.

So I figure it's my job."

"Hey, Scully.  Your aunt says she saw the storm, too.  The boy

came here for help," Mulder said, finding a good opportunity to open the

discussion back up.

"You did?  I thought they said that no one else saw the storm,"

Scully said looking at her aunt.

"No, I saw the storm.  It was right over my house.  Not the first

time either," she said, getting up.  "Look at the time, I'm getting tired.

I'm going to bed, see you two in the morning."

Scully tried to get her aunt to talk a little longer, but Mulder

gave her a look that said to just drop it.  They watched the woman go up

the stairs and disappear into her room.

Scully turned back to Mulder, "What was that all about?  She

didn't seem to want to talk about it."

"I know, that's the second time she's changed the subject.  We can

ask her more about it in the morning.  I think I'll go up stairs and try

to get some sleep," he got up, and headed toward the stairs.  "Good night

Scully, don't let the bed bugs bite."

She rolled her eyes at the bad joke.  "Night, Mulder."

Scully came down the stairs.  The house smelled like bacon.  She

entered the dining room and saw Mulder sitting at the table.  He was

wearing jeans and a T-shirt.  Chewing on a piece of bacon, he saw her.

"Morning.  Did you sleep well?"

"Very, how about you?"  She asked, knowing the answer.

"Lets just say the TV in my room got a lot of use."

She smiled, but she always felt bad when he couldn't sleep.  She

looked around the room, "Where's my aunt?"

"She got up around five this morning.  I joined her down here, and

she made me breakfast.  She left about an hour ago for the diner, she

didn't have the heart to wake you."

"Oh.  So did she tell you any more about the storm?"

He shook his head, "Sorry.  You better sit down and have some

breakfast, we need to leave in a few minutes."

He went into the kitchen and brought her a plate piled with

scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast.  "She made this for when you got up,

left it in the oven to stay warm.  It's very good, Carolanne is an

excellent cook."

"I know, she used to make Sunday breakfast for the entire family.

There was never anything left over."  Scully sat down next to Mulder and

ate her the food on her plate.  When she finished, they got up and

gathered the things they would need for the day.

When the arrived at the meeting place, Chief Brooks car was

already parked along the road.

"He must already be at the campsite.  How long a hike to this

place?"  Scully said, getting out of the car.

"About two miles in."  They entered the woods, following the path

that supposedly led to the campsite, but you never know where those things

go.

The wind was picking up as they ventured in further, leaves from

nearby trees flew by their heads.  The blue sky was turning gray from the

clouds covering it.

"Great, just what we need, a storm," Mulder said trying to keep

hold of the map Brooks had drawn for him.  "According to this, we're

almost there."

Rain began to come down, soaking them.  It was getting heavier,

they had to fight to be able to see. They entered a clearing, the

campsite, but couldn't see Brooks.

"BROOKS!  Hey, are you here?!"  Mulder yelled.  He looked at

Scully, who shook her shoulders.

"Maybe he went back to the car, like a person with any brains

would have done," she said.

A shadowy figure ran through the trees across the clearing,

"Mulder!  Did you see that?"

He turned towards the direction of where she was pointing.  "See

what?"

"I saw someone running in the trees over there."

The two agents walked over to the trees.  Scully pulled out her

gun, better safe than sorry.  They entered the woods, but didn't see

anyone.

"Maybe it was your imagination," he told her.

"No, I saw someone.  I know I did."

"Maybe it was a ghost."

Just then Scully felt a hand touch her shoulder and screamed,

surprising Mulder enough that he slipped and fell.  She turned around, and

saw Chief Brooks behind her.

The rain began to die down, allowing them to see better.

"Sorry, Agent Scully, I didn't mean to frighten you," he said,

leaning over to help Mulder up.

"You didn't frighten me, just surprised me," she assured him.

Mulder rose, his body covered in mud.  She couldn't help but laugh.

"Ha, ha.  You think this is funny, Scully?"  He said glaring at

her.

"Y-Yes.  I'm sorry, Mulder," she said stopping her laughter.

"Oh, that's okay," he walked up and grabbed her.  "How about a

hug?"

She screamed and squirmed out of his grasp, "Mulder!"  She was now

also covered in mud.

"Looks like today wasn't the best day for searching the scene,"

Mulder said to Brooks.

"Doesn't matter.  There's been another one, on the other side of

the White Rapids River.  About five miles from here.  Unfortunately we

can't cross that river, bridge is out, have to get to it from the other

side."

"Is it the same as the others.  Water in the lungs?"  Scully asked

him.

"Yeah.  This times it's a male.  Up here with his wife and son.

They went in to town, and when they came back, he was dead."

"Did anyone see the storm?"  Mulder said joining in the

conversation.

"It stormed all night, Agent Mulder.  There would have been no way

to tell last nights thunder storms apart from a weird one.  Agent Scully,

would you the autopsy?"

"Of course, lets go back to town."

Mother Nature pt.6

Mulder and Scully sat on the couch in the house.  Case folders

covered the coffee table along with the floor.

"It doesn't make any sense.  The latest autopsy report shows that

the victim had human scratches on his back, proofing that he was murdered.

But how does someone die from drowning, without actually drowning.  It's

impossible," she said examining the report in her hands.

"I have no idea," he said.

"Are you kidding.  You've got to have some weird theory about

alien abduction, or have a suspect like the Creature From the Black

Lagoon."

"Nope.  You said yourself they were human scratches, so that

eliminates aliens.  And the only suspect I have is Mother Nature, because

all the victims died in a storm."

"I know who's doing it," said a voice from behind them.

They turned around to see Carolanne standing in the doorway.

"I didn't want to say anything earlier because I thought he was

finished, but I guess he isn't."

"Who?  What are you talking about?"  Scully asked, running over to

her aunt.

She sat down in the Lazy Boy and Scully back on the couch.

"Matthew Carmichael."

"Who?"  Asked Mulder.

"He and this other man had owned the diner before me.  I would go

in everyday just to talk to him.  He was about your age, Fox.  The nicest

man I had ever met.  He was married, had a five year old daughter and

another kid on the way.  He wanted to take his family camping.  Amber,

that's his daughter, had never gone before.  They went up for the weekend,

he was gonna take Amber white water rafting, fishing, and teach her how to

do all that camping stuff," she explained.

"He and his partner had gotten into a big fight the day before he

left.  The guy wanted to sell the diner and turn it into a parking lot.

Matt refused.  I knew something was wrong, his partner was greedy.  He was

offered a lot of money, and would do anything for it.  On the second night

of the camping trip, while everyone was asleep, he snuck into the camp.

He tried to make Matt sign again, and when he refused, the man pulled a

gun.  Matt wrestled with him for it, but during the fight the gun fired.

It hit Matt's wife.  He ran to her side in time for her to die in his

arms.  The little girl saw everything and ran.  Matt chased her, it began

to storm, he couldn't see because the rain was so heavy.  He ran until he

got to the edge of the cliff, barely saw the edge.  When he bent down, he

saw the little girls locket on the ground.  He looked around for her, but

she was not in sight.  He looked over the cliff, and saw her jacket being

carried off by the rapids.  He dove in after he,"  she finished the story.

"If he dove in he would have died," Scully pointed out.

"Yes," Carolanne said, wiping a tear away from her eye.

"Than how could he be the killer?"  She asked her aunt.

"Just because someone dies physically, doesn't mean that their

soul dies," she explained.

"So you're saying the ghost of Matthew Carmichael is killing these

people," Scully said.

"Yes.  He was so angry when he lost his family, he couldn't stand

the pain."

"Carolanne, if you don't mind me asking, how do you know all

this?"  Mulder asked.

"He told me, Fox.  He told me," she said.  She looked at Scully,

who's face was full of disbelief.  "My niece doesn't believe in this kind

of thing.  It doesn't have a scientific explanation.  But that doesn't

mean it isn't true.  You believe me, don't you Fox?  Please believe me."

She and Scully stared at him waiting for an answer.

"Well, Carolanne, I don't- yes I do.  Sorry, Scully.  If someone

wants revenge bad enough, I believe that they are able to get it, even

after death."

"Fine.  But why those people?"  Scully asked, not believing she

was even somewhat buying this.

"The first victim, what was his name?"  Carolanne asked.

Scully picked up the case file, "His name was Jourgenson, Charles

Jourgenson."

"That was the partner.  He died a year later when his car got

stranded on the side of the road next to the forest.  He had to walk

through the woods to get back to town in under 5 hours.  Matt got his

revenge."

"Okay, but why kill the others?"  Scully asked.

"Matt doesn't want strangers in the woods where his family died.

It's like trespassing, punishable by death."

"So all the vicims appeared to have died the same way that he and

his daughter died.  How intriguing," Mulder said.

"After Jourgenson, I thought it was over, but I was wrong.  I'm

telling you this because you have to stop him."

"How are we supposed to do that?"  Mulder asked, still in total

amazement.

"I don't know, you just have to."

Scully sat listening to the conversation, unable to believe this.

She looked out the window at the wood, was it possible that the ghost of

Matthew Charmichael was living in there.

Her thoughts stopped when she saw that dark figure again.  It was

watching them.  She stood up, and ran towards the door.

"Mulder!  There it is again.  The figure, and this time I know

it's not my imagination," she ran out the door into the woods.

Carolanne and Mulder got up and ran for the door after her.

"NO, DANA!  Don't go into the woods!  DANA!  Come back!"

Carolanne screamed.

Mother Nature pt.7

Mulder grabbed his gun and a flashlight and took off after her.

"We'll be all right.  It's time to stop this guy," he yelled as he

entered the forest.

With the trees, it was almost pitch black, they blocked out almost

all the light.

"SCULLY!  Where are you?!"  He yelled, turning on the flashlight.

He couldn't find her.  He ran in farther, screaming her name.

He was about to give up on finding her in here, when he heard her

yell.  "Mulder!  Over here."

He ran in the direction of her voice, until he found her.  She was

leaning over something.  When he got closer he saw it was a puddle of

water.

"What is it, Scully.  That looks like water."

"Thank you, Mulder.  It is water.  I was chasing the guy, and he

fell right here.  I ran over to get him, but he was gone.  There are no

other puddles around here, the trees are to thick for the rain come

through to heavily."

"Do you think it was him?"  Mulder asked Scully as she got up off

the ground.

"Who?  Oh, do I think it was Matthew Charmichael.  No.  Don't tell

me you do."

"Your aunt says it's him."

"I know.  For some reason my family believes in this sort of

thing.  They're kind of weird about that."

"Well, Scully, if your family believes in this and you don't,

doesn't that make you the weird one?"

She glared at him, "Mulder, we don't have time for this.  We have

to find that guy."

They walked further in, the wind was picking up and rain began to

fall.

"Great another storm-"  Scully started to say, but stopped when

something hit her over the head.  Her knees  weakened and gave, she fell

to the ground unconscious.

Mulder turned to see his partner fall.  "Scully," he yelled trying

to catch her, but he missed.

He heard a noise behind him, and turned in time to see a rock come

flying at his head.  He dove out of the way.  When he looked up he was

looking at a man.

The man was pale, and ghost-like.  His eyes looked dead.

"Matthew Charmichael?"

The man didn't say anything, but shook his head yes.  He raised

his hand up to Mulder's head, he was holding Scully's gun.  He must have

gotten it when she fell.

He cocked it and was about to pull the trigger when someone

yelled, "Stop!"

Carolanne stepped out from behind a tree.  "Matt don't do this.

You have to stop-"

"I won't stop!"  He yelled back at her.  "I won't leave until I

find her."

"Find who?"  Carolanne asked.

"Amber.  I know she's here, and I won't leave without her."

He dropped his arm, and let Mulder get up.

"She's dead, Matt."  Mulder told him.

"I know.  So am I.  But I won't go on without her."

"Why do you have to kill all these people?"  He asked the ghost.

"They are interfering with my search.  They keep coming in here,

and scaring her away.  Now you have, too.  I have to kill you, I'm sorry."

He lifted his arm again and pulled the trigger.

Mulder dove sideways to avoid the bullet, but it hit him in the

arm.  Carolanne tried to get to him, but Matt was blocking her way.

"Mulder!  Are you all right?"  She yelled.

Seeing that he missed, the ghost cocked the gun again to fire.

"No Daddy!  Don't kill him!"

All three turned to see a little girl standing about ten feet

away.  Matt dropped the gun to the ground, and ran over to the girl.

Mulder reached for the gun and emptied the ammo.

Matt dropped to his knees to look at the girl.  "Amber?  Is it

really you?"

"Yes daddy.  It's me," she said.

He wrapped his arms around her, she hugged him back.

"I wanted to come sooner, but I couldn't," she said.  She looked

at the spectators, and smiled.  "We have to go now.  Mommy's waiting for

us."

She took his hand and they disappeared.

Carolanne and Mulder stood in shock, than remembered Scully.

They ran over to her.  She lay on the ground unmoving.  Carolanne

put pressure on the back of her nieces head, while Mulder nursed the wound

in his arm.

Scully awoke in a hospital room with a splitting headache.  She

turned to see Mulder and her aunt enter the room with a doctor.

"Mulder, what happened," she said tiredly.

The three people turned in surprise.

"Hey, Scully, you're awake.  How do you feel."

"I feel like someone my head as soccer ball."

He smiled, "You got hit over the head with a rock."

"Did you find the guy?"  She asked.

"Yes," he said looking over at Carolanne.

"Great, so he's in custody?"

"What?" She asked, confused.

"I'll explain later.  It's a long story, and you need your rest,"

he told her.

Carolanne kissed her on the head, "You feel better, sweety," she

said as she walked out the door.

Mulder followed, "I agree, get better quick.  So many aliens, so

little time, you know?"

The End
