Compucom Speedmodem with RBBS-PC Bulletin Board Software

 Using the Compucom Speedmodem with RBBS-PC Bulletin Board Software:

This is by no means a technical document on all the different ways to

initialize your CompuCom Speedmodem for RBBS-PC, but a SIMPLE guide...

oo ..Be sure the Speedmodem ROM version is at least 2.51. Type ATI3...

\/ ..from any communications program in TERMINAL mode for results...

   ..EXAMPLE: (c) Copyright CompuCom 1990 V2.51

oo ..RBBS-PC is only capable of utilizing com-port 1 through 2

\/ ..because of limitations within basic. This can be overcome with

  ...the use of a fossil driver as described in the RBBS

  ...documentation. Check your com port, the factory setting is

  ...usually 4, so have fun with the jumpers!

oo ..Com 3 or 4 REQUIRES a FOSSIL. Setup your com-port correctly...

\/ ..Refer to your Remote Access documentation, X00.SYS example below.

   ..Modify CONFIG.SYS with the line, refer to DOS if needed...

   ..DEVICE=C:\X00.SYS E T=2048 R=2048 1=2F8,IRQ3 B,1,19200...(For Com2)

oo ..Install RBBS as recommended. Run CONFIG.EXE and make the...

\/ ..following choices...

oo ..Hold the SHIFT and press F2...

\/ ..Choose 225...

225. Set the modem commands

oo.....................................................................

\/.PLEASE NOTE: RBBS 17.3b has a bug when choosing a HAYES compatible..

...default modem...                                                 ...

...RBBS will actually write a Q0 at this location _____________     ...

...I do not know why, but just be sure to check that         ||     ...

...Q0 is in the EXACT location as below                      ||     ...

...The H0 is necessary for the modem to hangup               ||     ...

...AT&F2+F*H2%C0 can be substituted with other variations    ||     ...

...as recommended in the Speedmodem manual                   ||     ...

...Lines 2 and 7 do not seem to have the above mentioned bug ||     ...

                                                             ||

         Currently Specified Modem Commands are:

1. Reset the modem                : AT&F2+F*H2%C0S0=1&C1&D2V1Q0M0X1H0&W

                                         ^^Not on CompuComs after 4/1/91

2. Initialize the modem           : AT&F2+F*H2%C0S0=1Q0X1&C1&D2V1M0H0&W

                                         ^^Not on CompuComs after 4/1/91

   Note: Item 2 MUST contain one of the following:

            S0=001  (to answer on 0 rings)   ...................

            S0=254  (to answer on >0 rings)  ...REFER to RBBS...

            S0=255  (to answer on >0 rings)  ...Documentation...

                                             ...S0=1 works OK...

3. Count the number of rings      : ATS1?    ...................

4. Answer the phone               : ATA

5. Take the phone off the hook    : ATH

6. Clear the modem's firmware     : AT&F

7. Initialize modem's firmware    : AT&F2+F*H2%C0S0=1&C1&D2V1Q0M0X1H0&W

221. Communications port--- COMx (1 or 2, up to 8 with a fossil)

***. # of seconds to wait for modem to initialize - 3

230. Are you using a 'DUMB' auto-answer modem? ---- NO

231. Initialize modem firmware for RBBS-PC.           ...AFTER 225...

241. Restore initial parms. after change to N/8/1 - NO

***. Minimum baud required of new callers --------- 0

***. Minimum baud required of old callers --------- 0

244. Modem flow control uses Clear-to-Send (CTS)--- YES

245. Modem flow control uses XON/XOFF ------------- NO

***. Seconds to wait for carrier after answering -- 30

oo ..*H2%C0 can be substituted with other variations...

\/ ..as recommended in the Speedmodem manual...

oo ..If using the COMBO, add +F to the Initialization string unless New

     ROM after 4/1/91

\/ ..turns fax off on the COMBO, returns ERROR on the CHAMP...

Dialing out:

oo ..RTS-CTS ON, ALL BAUD at 19200, AUTO BAUD DETECT OFF...

\/

  ...When using a long distance carrier with the Speedmodem...

  ...call your LD customer service and ask if a "carrier code"...

  ...is needed for proper "bandwidth" on "asynchronous" connections...

oo ..An example where this code is needed is the US Sprint...

\/ ..FIBER OPTIC NETWORK, to access a ""full-bandwidth" line...

  ...the code 10333 is needed, that is dial 10333-1-800-000-0000...

  ...this ensures that the FULL bandwidth is available to you...

  ...otherwise, a sudden "No carrier" can result...

Well, this by no means covers all the ways to use RBBS with a Compucom

Speedmodem. But it should help you initially (pun?). If all else fails,

don't forget to read the doc's!
