What could make more sense than:
A combination Sound-effects/Modem/Fax/Touch-tone decoder/Voice card?
By using only one slot, you get all those sound- and modulation-oriented
functions at once! Makes sense. And it's expandable, too. Lots of room
for extra RAM. Oh, yes.
Indeed, there does seem to be a LOT of room for RAM, doesn't there? You look
closely at the card and notice that your model has a lot more memory than
the picture you saw in a magazine. You scratch your head. Hmmm. Odd.
That salesperson at the computer store -- the pimply-faced teenager with the
pen-holder in his pocket -- seemed VERY insistent that you get this card.
He gave you a super low price. Lower than the lowest price in Computer
Shopper. He told you he was offering you the "Sysop Special", just because
you'd mentioned you were starting a BBS. Well, that made sense.
Yet ... why all that extra RAM? And why is the ROM chip socketed, when the
one in the magazine is soldered in? Hmmm. Oh, well. Maybe it's just one of
those computer things?

Down in his basement, the hacker is dialling in to your BBS. He sends the
special escape sequence to trigger your card's "Extra Features". He
downloads a copy of your root directory for later analysis, then downloads
20 minutes of compressed sound data, which was saved to RAM every time a
voice was detected. He snickers smugly.
Logging off, he plays back the voice track. To his astonishment, he hears
your voice, clear as a bell: "Hello, hacker. The police and the phone
company are out in your driveway! Enjoy your stay in prison!"

Just one of those computer things!
