THE ROMANS

THE ROMANS.   Written by Dennis Spooner.   4 Episodes.
               16th January - 6th February 1965.

The Slave Traders, All Roads Lead to Rome, Conspiracy, Inferno.

 COMPANIONS:- Ian, Barbara and Vicki.

The TARDIS crew are enjoying a period of rest and recuperation in ancient
Rome. Before long, Ian and Barbara and taken prisoner by slavers and the
Doctor finds a dead man with a lyre in some bushes. He is mistaken for the
dead man, the lyre player Maximus Pettulian and is taken to entertain at
 Nero's court.
Meanwhile Ian has been sold as a galley slave and Barbara arrives as a
slave girl to Nero, who takes rather a shine to her. Ian escapes from the
galley with another man, Delos and travels to Rome to find Barbara. All of
the travellers are unaware of each others movements and fate!
This story was played for laughs. Derek Francis, who played Nero and
William Hartnell were no strangers to farce and it showed in their great
performances. This wasn't so much Doctor Who as Carry On Cleo with even
Gerton Klauber reprising his role from the notorious comedy as galley
 master.
Notable in this story is the fight scene between the Doctor and a would-
be assassin. No doubles were used and it showed Hartnell at his best.
