THE ICE WARRIORS
THE ICE WARRIORS. Written by Brian Hayles. 4 episodes.
11th November - 16th December 1967.
COMPANIONS:- Jamie and Victoria.
It is the new Ice Age and the TARDIS materialises at a base on the edge
of the ice barrier, where an ioniser is being used to keep the wall at bay.
They discover a body in the ice, that of Varga, an Ice Warrior from the
planet Mars. The Ice Warriors had invaded Earth during the previous Ice Age.
When Varga recovers he takes Victoria hostage and revives his crew, planning
to take over the world.
The Doctor foils the plan by using the ioniser at full strength to
destroy the Warriors and their ship.
The idea of finding an alien invader in the ice was used in the 1950s
classic "The Thing from Another World" and its remake, John Carpenter's
"The Thing".
The Ice Warriors became very popular, mostly due to the excellent acting
by the late Bernard Bresslaw as Varga. Bresslaw was best known for his
comedy roles but was actually an accomplished Shakespearian actor.
He invented the hissing speech of the Ice Warrior.
