Read Fred Hoyle's 'A For Andromeda', which also appeared as a TV
series in the UK.
The alien invader is a radio transmission from interstellar space. It is
partially decoded by a scientist who recognises it as the plans for
the construction of a computer. The computer is built, and promptly
begins to genetically 'cook' the biological version of the aliens in
a laboratory.
It makes sense, since the information needed to propagate the race
travels at the speed of light, in (possibly) all directions, and with
little cost.
