THE MIND ROBBER

THE MIND ROBBER.   Written by Peter Ling.   5 episodes.
                    14th September - 12th October 1968.

 COMPANIONS:- Jamie and Zoe.

Activating the TARDIS emergency switch to escape the lava flow on Dulkis,
the ship is taken out of Time and Space and arrives in the land of Fiction.
Lured from the TARDIS by images of home, Jamie and Zoe are menaced by
robots and are saved by the Doctor. They leave the TARDIS and are attacked
by creatures from mythology including a Minotaur and Gorgon as well as
other creations from fantasy such as clockwork soldiers and Unicorns.
They also meet literary creations such as Lemuel Gulliver and Rapunzel.
The world is ruled by the Master of the Land, a writer who was taken from
Earth to control the fantasy world and who wants the Doctor to replace him
so that he can return to his own time.
In a battle of wits the Doctor defeats the Master using champions from
Earth's fiction. Meanwhile, Zoe finds the true Master, a giant computer.
The travellers manage to overload it and escape, taking the Master with
 them.
This story is remarkable in that Jamie isn't played by Fraser Hines for
much of the time but by another actor, Hamish Wilson. Fraser Hines became
unwell part of the way through recording this story and so the writers
came up with an ingenious solution to their problem. As one of the Doctors'
initial tests, Jamie is frozen and his face taken away and placed on a
board with other features. The Doctor has to rebuild Jamie's face and he
gets it wrong. When Hines was fit to resume filming, the Doctor was again
tested in this way and this time got it right!
Part one of this story was written by Derrick Sherwin and the story is
 available from BBC Video.
