<h2>A Look at the X Philes: a demographic survey of Internet users</h2>

<h3>INTRODUCTION</h3>
We received more than 365 responses to our X Files survey,
which was posted on three Usenet newsgroups (rec.arts.tv.sf,
rec.arts.tv., rec.arts.tv.x-files) and to the America Online X Files
discussion group. Responses were not marked by which group they
originated from, so we cannot look at any differences among the
groups. All responses were analyzed together, treated as one group.
We have 364 cases that arrived before the deadline and were used in
the analysis. The group members are referred to as X Philes, the name
chosen by vote in the rec.arts.tv.x-files newsgroup.
The survey asked for basic demographic information, such as
age, sex, region, educational level. We also asked for a subjective
measure of viewing habits and for a list of other favorite television
shows. The survey did not ask for ethnic or racial information nor for
employement or socio-economic class data.
Data was compiled by a custom program to extract data points
from electronic mail messages and then analyzed using SPSSX. Only
simple basic frequencies and percentages were run. If there is
interest in further analysis, we can run correlations.
This paper is broken into two parts, a text consisting of the
introduction, results, and conclusions, and the computer output with
tables and barcharts. In the text, percentages are rounded. To see
exact frequencies, please refer to the tables and charts following.
The survey was designed, data compiled, and analysis conducted
by Charles McGrew (mcgrew@cs.rutgers.edu) and Shana Walton
(swalton@whale.st.usm.edu). We take responsibility for any errors and
are interested in any feedback, questions, or complaints.
<h3>RESULTS</h3>
A statistical snapshot of a "typical" X Phile is a male
between the ages of 25 and 34 who is college educated, lives in the
Northeastern part of the United States, considers himself to consume
television in a moderate amount and whose favorite show (besides the X
Files) is Star Trek, in one of its many forms.
Some 84 percent of the people who answered the survey were Net
users (not surprising since the survey *was* posted on the Net). But
those people talked friends into filling out forms and that resulted
in the survey reaching about 58 people who were not Net Users, about
16 percent of the responses.
Clearly the overwhelming majority of X Philes are young.
Three-fourths of us are between 18 and 35. But another 20 percent -
one-fifth - were from people who were between 35 and 50. Only three
percent of responses were from people between the ages of 12 and 18;
35 percent were from people who were between 18 and 24; 40 percent
were from people between 25 and 34; 20 percent were between 35 and 50;
and only 1 percent (five responses) were from people over 50.
There's a clean 60-40 split between the sexes: males, 60
percent; females, 40 percent.
This is a well-educated group. The majority of respondents,
60 percent, have at least a bachelor's degree, and a third are either
graduate students or hold a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., J.D., M.D.,
etc.). The percentages are: 7 percent are high school students; 33
percent are college undergraduates; 27 percent have bachelor's
degrees; 14 percent are graduate students; and 19 percent hold
terminal degrees.
Out of the 364 responses, the majority were from the United
States. A sizeable minority, however, 16 percent, came from other
countries. There were 51 respondents from Canada, three from
Australia, three from England, one each from the Netherlands and from
Brazil. Of the U.S. respondents, one third were from the Northeast; 12
percent from the southeast; 15 percent from the central states; 18
percent from the southwest; and only 6 percent from the northwest.
(The regional divisions were supplied by FOX broadcasting. Northeast,
above Virginia; southeast, east of the Mississippi River; southwest,
below Oregon; northwest, west of the Rockies.)
About half of the respondents considered themselves "medium"
viewers of television. Since the terms "light," "medium," and "heavy"
were not defined, what this actually means in terms of viewing hours
is ambiguous. About a third see themselves as "light" viewers and 22
percent as "heavy" viewers.
The survey allowed X Philes to list up to three favorite
television shows they watch in addition to the X Files. That makes a
possible total of 1,092 responses if each person listed three (not
everyone did). Because people wrote in responses and did not check off
categories, this data was not coded and, therefore, is not in the
frequencies and percentages section at all. People wrote in the names
of about 140 different television shows. Star Trek, in its many
incarnations, was the most frequently listed show. Star Trek: The Next
Generation was listed 160 times; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, 70 times;
Star Trek (both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine as one entry),
10 times; Star Trek (the original show) 8 times; and Star Trek (all
versions as one entry), 6 times. In all, then, the words "Star Trek"
appeared 254 times. From this, however, you cannot conclude that 254
of the 364 respondents listed Star Trek (in some form) as a favorite
show). Some people listed some version of Star Trek as two or more of
their three answers. You can conclude that about one-fourth of all
possible response space was devoted to Star Trek.

<h3>CONCLUSIONS</h3>
The most obvious conclusion is that this survey drew a picture
of not only a typical X Phile, but a typical Net user. (Note: I have
no statistics at hand, but past studies have shown that the Internet
is changing, but still mostly used by men.) If we can extrapolate from
this survey to make conclusions about the entire group, then this
group is interesting because it has a greater amount of participation
by women than other groups. The women's participation can be an
indicator of how popular the show is with women. If a male-majority
environment can produce almost 40 percent participation by women, then
you might predict that, among the general public the split would be
closer to fifty-fifty.
The number of responses in many of the category breakdowns are
very close. No t tests were run to look for statistical significance,
but a good guess might be that, statistically, there would be no
differences in the numbers of people in the three middle age
categories, in educational levels between college undergraduate and
bachelor's degree, and, perhaps, in sex. Among the U.S. regions, it
appears that the only significant category might be the northeast.
Therefore a more accurate statistical picture could go
something like this: a male or female, between the age of 18 and 35,
who is either in college or has at least a bachelor's degree, who is
from the northeast and whose favorite show is Star Trek.
One final, obvious, conclusion is that the X Files has
successfully tapped into the Star Trek audience.

<h2>A Look at the X Philes: a demographic survey of Internet users</h2>

<h3>INTRODUCTION</h3>
We received more than 365 responses to our X Files survey,
which was posted on three Usenet newsgroups (rec.arts.tv.sf,
rec.arts.tv., rec.arts.tv.x-files) and to the America Online X Files
discussion group. Responses were not marked by which group they
originated from, so we cannot look at any differences among the
groups. All responses were analyzed together, treated as one group.
We have 364 cases that arrived before the deadline and were used in
the analysis. The group members are referred to as X Philes, the name
chosen by vote in the rec.arts.tv.x-files newsgroup.
The survey asked for basic demographic information, such as
age, sex, region, educational level. We also asked for a subjective
measure of viewing habits and for a list of other favorite television
shows. The survey did not ask for ethnic or racial information nor for
employement or socio-economic class data.
Data was compiled by a custom program to extract data points
from electronic mail messages and then analyzed using SPSSX. Only
simple basic frequencies and percentages were run. If there is
interest in further analysis, we can run correlations.
This paper is broken into two parts, a text consisting of the
introduction, results, and conclusions, and the computer output with
tables and barcharts. In the text, percentages are rounded. To see
exact frequencies, please refer to the tables and charts following.
The survey was designed, data compiled, and analysis conducted
by Charles McGrew (mcgrew@cs.rutgers.edu) and Shana Walton
(swalton@whale.st.usm.edu). We take responsibility for any errors and
are interested in any feedback, questions, or complaints.
<h3>RESULTS</h3>
A statistical snapshot of a "typical" X Phile is a male
between the ages of 25 and 34 who is college educated, lives in the
Northeastern part of the United States, considers himself to consume
television in a moderate amount and whose favorite show (besides the X
Files) is Star Trek, in one of its many forms.
Some 84 percent of the people who answered the survey were Net
users (not surprising since the survey *was* posted on the Net). But
those people talked friends into filling out forms and that resulted
in the survey reaching about 58 people who were not Net Users, about
16 percent of the responses.
Clearly the overwhelming majority of X Philes are young.
Three-fourths of us are between 18 and 35. But another 20 percent -
one-fifth - were from people who were between 35 and 50. Only three
percent of responses were from people between the ages of 12 and 18;
35 percent were from people who were between 18 and 24; 40 percent
were from people between 25 and 34; 20 percent were between 35 and 50;
and only 1 percent (five responses) were from people over 50.
There's a clean 60-40 split between the sexes: males, 60
percent; females, 40 percent.
This is a well-educated group. The majority of respondents,
60 percent, have at least a bachelor's degree, and a third are either
graduate students or hold a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., J.D., M.D.,
etc.). The percentages are: 7 percent are high school students; 33
percent are college undergraduates; 27 percent have bachelor's
degrees; 14 percent are graduate students; and 19 percent hold
terminal degrees.
Out of the 364 responses, the majority were from the United
States. A sizeable minority, however, 16 percent, came from other
countries. There were 51 respondents from Canada, three from
Australia, three from England, one each from the Netherlands and from
Brazil. Of the U.S. respondents, one third were from the Northeast; 12
percent from the southeast; 15 percent from the central states; 18
percent from the southwest; and only 6 percent from the northwest.
(The regional divisions were supplied by FOX broadcasting. Northeast,
above Virginia; southeast, east of the Mississippi River; southwest,
below Oregon; northwest, west of the Rockies.)
About half of the respondents considered themselves "medium"
viewers of television. Since the terms "light," "medium," and "heavy"
were not defined, what this actually means in terms of viewing hours
is ambiguous. About a third see themselves as "light" viewers and 22
percent as "heavy" viewers.
The survey allowed X Philes to list up to three favorite
television shows they watch in addition to the X Files. That makes a
possible total of 1,092 responses if each person listed three (not
everyone did). Because people wrote in responses and did not check off
categories, this data was not coded and, therefore, is not in the
frequencies and percentages section at all. People wrote in the names
of about 140 different television shows. Star Trek, in its many
incarnations, was the most frequently listed show. Star Trek: The Next
Generation was listed 160 times; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, 70 times;
Star Trek (both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine as one entry),
10 times; Star Trek (the original show) 8 times; and Star Trek (all
versions as one entry), 6 times. In all, then, the words "Star Trek"
appeared 254 times. From this, however, you cannot conclude that 254
of the 364 respondents listed Star Trek (in some form) as a favorite
show). Some people listed some version of Star Trek as two or more of
their three answers. You can conclude that about one-fourth of all
possible response space was devoted to Star Trek.

<h3>CONCLUSIONS</h3>
The most obvious conclusion is that this survey drew a picture
of not only a typical X Phile, but a typical Net user. (Note: I have
no statistics at hand, but past studies have shown that the Internet
is changing, but still mostly used by men.) If we can extrapolate from
this survey to make conclusions about the entire group, then this
group is interesting because it has a greater amount of participation
by women than other groups. The women's participation can be an
indicator of how popular the show is with women. If a male-majority
environment can produce almost 40 percent participation by women, then
you might predict that, among the general public the split would be
closer to fifty-fifty.
The number of responses in many of the category breakdowns are
very close. No t tests were run to look for statistical significance,
but a good guess might be that, statistically, there would be no
differences in the numbers of people in the three middle age
categories, in educational levels between college undergraduate and
bachelor's degree, and, perhaps, in sex. Among the U.S. regions, it
appears that the only significant category might be the northeast.
Therefore a more accurate statistical picture could go
something like this: a male or female, between the age of 18 and 35,
who is either in college or has at least a bachelor's degree, who is
from the northeast and whose favorite show is Star Trek.
One final, obvious, conclusion is that the X Files has
successfully tapped into the Star Trek audience.
