Doctor Who: The Enemy of the World
THE ENEMY OF THE WORLD. Written of David Whittaker. 6 episodes.
23rd December 1967 - 27th January 1968.
COMPANIONS:- Jamie and Victoria.
The TARDIS lands in Australia and the travellers are attacked by a
hovercraft. They are rescued by a helicopter flown by a girl called Astrid,
whose boss, Giles Kent, explains that the Doctor is the double of the
would-be dictator, Salamander.
Salamander is using his invention, the Sun Store, to cause natural
disasters all over the world, de-stablising the Controllers of the world's
national zones. He hopes to cause enough unrest to be able to replace them
with his own men, thus controlling the world.
Jamie and Victoria are captured when they infiltrate Salamander's group
and the Doctor has to impersonate Salamander to rescue them. He penetrates
the HQ and finds that Kent is about to try taking Salamander's powerbase
from him.
Salamander in turn, impersonates the Doctor and tries to steal the
TARDIS but is ejected into space due to the isomorphic nature of the
controls.
This story is notable for the excellent double performance of Patrick
Troughton as the Doctor (of course) and the General Francoish dictator.
