FIREWOOD COLLECTION BEGINS AT ILLINOIS STATE FORESTS

FIREWOOD COLLECTION BEGINS AT ILLINOIS STATE FORESTS

SPRINGFIELD, ILL., Oct. 19, 1995 -- Individuals may collect
firewood for their personal use from downed, dead trees at four
state forests, Conservation Director Brent Manning said today.

To collect firewood at Trail of Tears, Hidden Springs, Big
River and Sand Ridge state forests, individuals must purchase a
$10, one-day collection permit, which authorizes the collection of
a standard pick-up truckload of wood, or an amount measuring 8 feet
by 4 feet by 20 inches. The permits must be obtained for specific
dates from the office of the forest where the applicant intends to
gather firewood. Up to two permits can be issued to each collector
per year.

Firewood can be gathered only from areas designated by the
forest site superintendent and must come only from trees that are
dead and downed. The wood must be for the collector's personal use
and collectors must provide their own equipment to cut and haul
firewood.

Collection is available at Trail of Tears State Forest,
northwest of Jonesboro in Union County, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday
through Sunday, 618/833-4910; Hidden Springs State Forest,
southeast of Shelbyville in Shelby County, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,
Wednesday through Sunday, 217/644-3091; Sand Ridge State Forest,
near Forest City in Mason County, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday
through Sunday, 309/597-2212; and Big River State Forest, south of
Keithsburg in Henderson County, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday
through Sunday, 309/374-2496.

Firewood gathering is allowed through Jan. 31 at Hidden
Springs and Sand Ridge, and year-round at Big River and Trail of
Tears. Collectors are not allowed to pick up firewood on national
holidays or during the firearm and muzzleloader deer hunting
seasons. The firearm deer season this year is Nov. 17-19 and Nov.
30-Dec. 3, and the muzzleloader season is Dec. 8-10.
