Yet another gospel session. ~ Hank Davis
Between 1966 and 1968, Elvis recorded just enough studio material to
fill one complete secular album and HOW GREAT THOU ART, a far more
polite (and slightly surreal) reading of traditional religious
material than the previous outing, a half-dozen years earlier. The
performances throughout are superb, the sound impeccable; this
actually beat SGT. PEPPER as the Best Engineered Album of 1967 in the
Grammys! This album is also much closer to mainstream gospel and may
not be so immediately accessible to the unconverted; don't let that
steer you away from an otherwise great record. ~ Neal Umphred
The material that Elvis also recorded (with new executive producer
Felton Jarvis, who seemed to spur Elvis on) included several
interesting singles. "Big Boss Man," "Guitar Man," and "U.S. Male" now
stand as experiments in a raunchy country & blues sound. The same
sessions that produced the gospel material also had Elvis turning in
his funkiest outing in ages with "Down in the Alley" and a positively
radiant reading of Bob Dylan's then unreleased "Tomorrow Is a Long
Time." Both of these, along with a gorgeous new ballad, "I'll Remember
You," close out he otherwise nearly nauseating SPINOUT album as "bonus

When Elvis and the Colonel decided it was time to start appearing live
again, they assembled a crackerjack band (featuring guitarist James
Burton) and took on Vegas full bore. Easily the King's best live
album, the highlights on IN PERSON (AT THE INTERNATIONAL HOTEL, LAS
VEGAS, NV) include "Johnny B. Goode," the "My Babe/Mystery
