When Howlin' Wolf was asked to name his favorite white blues singers,
Presley's name was one of the first to come up. This "Elvis sings the
blues" compilation, full of real treasures drawn from a half dozen
albums, goes a long way towards explaining why he felt that way. ~

Since Elvis's death in 1977, the market has been inundated with an
array of repackages, most of them artless, pointless and, a fan might
wish, profitless. Part of the 50th Anniversary celebration, RECONSIDER
BABY offered little that was new, but the concept -- Elvis as an R&B
singer -- was overdue. The selection is impossible to argue with, the
programming perfect, and the album makes its argument aptly. ~ Neal

This oft ignored album, recorded in March 1974 at Memphis' Midsouth
Coliseum, formerly the center of controversy when the proposed title,
the Elvis Presley Coliseum, was poopooed, is easily the strongest live
package of the 70s, the one worth having. Elvis is in exceptional
vocal form and, between all the stuff that showed up on every other
live album of the period, there is a great "Trying to Get to You" and
strong versions of "My Baby Left Me" and "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy,"

Within a year, the emotional involvement and the sense of joie de
vivre of both ELVIS IS BACK! and HIS HAND IN MINE was replaced by the
more stunted professionalism of SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY. Which, while
certainly not a compliment, is not meant as a total put-down. There
are some excellent moments on this LP ("I Want You with Me" would have
made a credible single) but, for the first time, it is the "rhythm
numbers" that pull down the overall excellence, not the ballads. In
the midst of restraint, he cut "Feel So Bad," a scorcher that reached
the upper reaches of the charts in 61 and heated up the first side of
GOLDEN RECORDS, VOLUME 3. ~ Neal Umphred

The second volume of ESSENTIAL ELVIS offers Elvis in binaural stereo
from the January 1957 sessions that produced several hits. (RCA Victor
generously filled the disc out with mono masters of the remaining
songs to give the consumer a complete version of the sessions.) This
is a lot of fun; the gaffes are numerous, obvious, and hilarious, and
for ears raised on multi-track recording, it must be amazing to hear
an entire record recorded live in the studio! ~ Neal Umphred
... the fact 16 of these outtakes, all from 1957, were recorded in
"binaural," an early form of stereo which original engineer Thorne
Nogar used to create a "safety" copy of the takes used, is
significant. Yet ... I can't see the musical point in this collection.
Most tracks differ only nominally from the released versions.... In

It only took Elvis and the Colonel (no, sorry, the order is wrong: the
Colonel and Elvis) twenty years to compile the greatest music the King
ever made onto one coherent package, and they did that only because
RCA of Great Britain had done it the year before and imported copies
were selling out all over the US. So, what does one say about sixteen
sides the equal of which one might have to search adjectives for? That
Elvis" Sun recordings stand as the Rosetta Stones of rock & roll and
modern country & western. Or, that along with perhaps KING OF THE
DELTA BLUES SINGERS, it is one of the handful of absolutely essential
-- and continually influential -- collections ever released? Or, does
one complain that no one took the time to find the original tapes,
using the tampered album (refer to FOR LP FANS ONLY and A DATE WITH
ELVIS above) masters instead? Oh, well, at the very least, it was

Even with its botched sound (RCA Victor's laudable but ultimately
incomplete computer assisted "digitally restored mono"), THE COMPLETE
SUN SESSIONS is an extraordinary collection. The tracks originally
released in the 50s take up the first two sides; the late material,
released on a hodgepodge of LPs over the years, the third side; and
the final side is a set of previously unreleased (legally) alternate
takes of the kid working his way through "I Love You Because" and "My
Baby's Gone." Historically essential; aesthetically transcendent;
technically flawed. ~ Neal Umphred
The place where rock & roll begins. "That's All Right," "Baby, Let's
Play House," "Mystery Train," "Milkcow Blues Boogie," and "Good
Rockin' Tonight," plus fascinating outtakes like "When It Rains, It

Returning to the more familiar haunts of Nashville in 1970, Elvis &
Co. recorded three dozen tracks, the best of which are on a par with
the Memphis recordings from the preceding year. From these two albums
emerged, both flawed, both excellent. THAT'S THE WAY IT IS, purporting
to be the soundtrack from the documentary of the same name, contains
eight of those sides, with Elvis at his most delicious ease. The live
recordings are negligible and sink the album's basic level EXCEPT for

programmed randomly, which certainly doesn't help tell the story of

Another budget album, this one collecting various gospel items from
sundry sources ("Let Us Pray" was the closer to what may be Elvis"
most outrageous piece of celluloid, 1969's CHANGE OF HABIT) and
orbiting them around the four tracks from 1957's PEACE IN THE VALLEY
EP (no longer a part of ELVIS" CHRISTMAS ALBUM, which had been deleted
and then resurrected as a budget Camden album with a slightly revamped
line-up). Not in the league of Elvis" regular catalog gospel albums
