> NEW ORB ALBUM !!!!

    From MixMag Update, 27th February 1992 :

      " UNIDENTIFIED FLYING ORB

Stardate : 1992.  Time for a new Orb  album,  because the Starship
Orb is back in the  studio  to  record  a  follow-up to the 85,000
unit  shifting  "Adventures Beyond  The  Ultraworld"  and  "Aubrey
Mixes".  Provisionally titled "U.F.Orb",  it promises according to
Orb mainman Alex Patterson [sic] to be a concept album.

Musically, things  will  be  equally  deep,  and  we  are promised
"techno with a reggae  feel",  not  to  mention  "lots  of  little
things going on deep  in  the  mix,   strange  little  things that
you'll miss unless you listen really carefully."

Heavily Eastern influenced  in  other  words by Patterson's recent
sojourn in Goa, India's hippy beach hangout.  "Unidentified Flying
Orb" also featured Jah Wobble's bass on the track "Blue Room", the
results of Alex' collaboration with Marathon's Thomas Fehlman, and
is scheduled for summer release. "

Jah Wobble...Eastern influences....reggae feel...sounds pretty good to me!
I get worried when people use the term 'concept album' though........

Certainly it is demo, yes. The cassette dates from about March 1991.  I
haven't got a copy myself, but a friend has and he sent me a photocopy of
    the inlay (great eh?!).

> Select Magazine

This month's Select featured a free tape of Creation Records recordings.
One of the tracks was an edit of a solo production by Bill Drummond,
originally released in 1986 on the B-side of his "I'm The King Of Joy"
12".  Richard Rackham sent the accompanying article, and a transcription
of the lyrics.  The track is "The Manager's Speech (Edit)", the tape bears
the catalogue number C-RE 128.  Incidentally, there was also a photo of
Dr.Alex Paterson in the centre pages :).

" It is 1986 and Bill Drummond, former manager of Echo and the
Bunnymen,  The Teardrop Explodes  and Strawberry Switchblade
has just quit his  post  as  head  of  A&R  at  Korova.  The
label's last signing  is  Brilliant,  soon to be produced by
Stock, Aitken & Waterman, featuring Jimmy Cauty.

Drummond signs to  Creation  for  an  album  modestly titled
"Bill Drummond - The Man",  awash  with anarchic Country and
Western and infamous for  the  track  "Julian Cope Is Dead".
He releases a 12-inch Single "King of Joy" and Creation want
        a video and 'B-side'.

The muse visits Drummond.  He  elects  to  make a ten minute
promotional clip  of  himself  pushing  a  street  cleaner's
dustcart through a park,  a gold disc stuck on the front,  a
guitar in the bin,  "spontaneously pontificating"  upon  the
subject of pop stardom.  The  opening  selection  appears on
        the Select tape.

BILL DRUMMOND :  'I did it 'cos it was cheap and we needed a
B-Side.  It's a  sort  of  layman's  eye  view  of  the  pop
business.  The view of some  guy  you meet in the pub,  or a
cab driver,  and you make the mistake of telling him you are
in the music business and  he  starts  giving you his theory
about it - 'Fuckin Duran Duran,  eh ?....'.  It  was kind of
cynical but I really felt I  had  a future as an artist than
        someone behind the scenes.'

A year later  Drummond and Cauty  release their first single
as The JAMMS.  Shortly after they mutate into The KLF. "

    The Managers Speech (Edit)  :

< Recorded outside with birds  chirping and Country and >
< Western Music being played - suddenly the music stops >

It's always gotta be something new isn't there?  If it aint
the new Beatles,  it's  the  new  Rolling Stones,  new  Bob
Dylan, new Elvis Presley.  Yer Sex Pistols.  What about the
new Zodiac Mindwarp ?   We  haven't  even finished with the
last one yet.  Me - I'm the  new Bill Drummond.  My  record
company boss - he wanted me  to  make a video.  On the kind
of budget he was talking about, I don't think yer could get
to Heathrow let alone the  grand  visions I had of explicit
locations,  scantily clad girls.  No,  but  it does give me
the opportunity to talk to you  about something vastly more
important  than  my  personal  vanities.  I  wanted  to  do
something that was more grown  up  with  my life, yer know,
more important.  I want,  when  I  get sixty,  sixty-f.....
whenever it is when I retire, I want to be able to look and
say "I did some ... I helped", but what can I do?  I'd like
to put a stop to the destruction of the rainforests  -  but
foolhardy and more would it  be  for me,  Bill Drummond, to
single-handedly row up the  Amazon  and say 'Stop ! - Don't
cut down those trees'.  No  -  world peace - I joined CND -
they didn't ban the bomb.   And then there's that acid rain
isn't there - I could go out and buy an umbrella and that's
about all.  Now what do I know about? The only thing is pop
        music - pop music - that's all - that's it....  <fades out>

The UK 12" version is an edit of the full version that appears on the US
and Japanese issues.  The main difference is the omission of the US city
listing.  The UK CD however does feature the full version, and calls it
the 'Uncensored Version'.  I think there are other minor differences too.

    >  Also, I have a question about  JAMS 26T,  the "Burn The Bastards"
    >  12"  (I know,  ancient history,  but  it  recently showed up at a
    >  local record store...), specifically:  are the A-side songs "Burn

The first track, "Burn The Bastards", is just about the same as the
version on "Shag Times".  It actually doesn't go through the whole
chimes of Big Ben and party outro, but stops after "Kick out the old
welcome the n..".  The last word, "new" is cut off, and it immediately
leads into the four "Mu Mu" chants opening "Burn The Beat (II)" on
"Shag Times", and the UK 12" KLF 002T.  However, this version, "Burn
The Beat (I)" is different from (II) from here on.  It is a slightly
more peculiar dance remix, that The KLF didn't really like.  Although
labelled differently, I am pretty sure it corresponds to one of the
tracks on the TVT 12" - "Burn The Beat(Mu Mu Mix)", judging by the
   track timings.

Nice sig.....personally, I liked the edit of "It's Grim Up North", just
for the sheer nerve of putting 1.5 minutes of a hymn, "Jerusalem" into
the national charts, where you *really* wouldn't expect to find one
  normally.

> How To Make A List Co-ordinator Jealous, part one.

The multi-talented Charles Breen and ever-present Ian Hastie recently had
the good fortune (!) to meet Cressida, who is Jimmy Cauty's wife, and one
of the people who works (occasionally!) in the KLF office.  They of course
asked lots of questions on behalf of the list  (it *was* for me, wasn't it
Charles?!), and found out a few bits and pieces :

On the "Uptight" single sleeve by Disco 2000, Cressida's eyes were
actually tinted turquoise ... because she wanted them to be.

She claims the 3 copies of KLF004M, the "What Time Is Love" Monster
Attack mix are "At home....".  Furthermore, Cress seemed at one point
to think there were not 3 but 6 KLF 004 M's.  They were done up as test
presses, but Bill and Jimi didn't like it so they didn't release it.

The multi-coloured vinyl 7" of "America:What Time Is Love" she hasn't
heard of and MAY be a Euro import....she isnt sure.

She had NO news on Black room, since Bill and Jimmy "havent a clue
what they are doing either".....    :(

The original studio copy of "The White Room", has been taped and sold
by some unscrupulous technician from somewhere, they AREN'T happy about
     this.

They are waiting for Bill to write Info Sheet #14.

> How To Make A List Co-ordinator Jealous, parts two, three and four.

Charles got a present from Cress <sigh>.  Here are his notes :

CHOC ICE 2   12"PD  JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT(Stand by the JAMs)//
                       AMERICA: WHAT TIME IS LOVE?

   Runout A side is CHOCICE-2-A1 (Townhouse)//KLF USA 004 X A' (Damont).
Probably 35 pressed, or maybe as many as 70, for promotional use.
What an absolutely STUNNING picture disc this is...... It must surely
surpass the Marillion PicDisc, "Market Sq Heroes" in terms of good looks.
The A-side is a still from the "Justified & Ancient" video, with Maxine
on top of the stone structure, surrounded by four women with white robes
on and blonde hair.  Beneath her are four MuMu's dancing.  Below them
Bill and Jimmy stand with their guitars and their maroon robes with the
horns on.  And below them are the MuMu's playing the bongos etc.
The picture on the B-side is just the picture used on the UK versions
of the "America:WTIL?" single.  The record has a 2mm deep black edge.
Absolutely superb.....Pride of my KLF collection.  It comes in a 12"
   clear plastic sleeve.

   <sigh again>.

> The KLF/Orb Archive

I have now had Dave Datta add in all the KLF Info Sheets, with index, to
   the ftp archive at  cs.uwp.edu (131.210.1.4), in /pub/music/lists/klf .
They are almost direct transcriptions of the actual sheets, with minor
editing sometimes being performed.  Hopefully sometime pretty soon I shall
do a commentary on them, explaining how things later developed and expanding
on the information given in the sheets.

The ftp site is mirrored on the Monochrome Bulletin Board, in the KLF
   Archive there.  Abs(olute) key-path is  [ESC] [g] [z] [s] [t] [k] .

> Final note

This will be the last mailout for some time : I get a break for a month
over Easter, and I intend to make full use of it !   You can still send
me mail, hopefully my site won't have a major outage again.  I shall try
and attend to the mail if I get the opportunity over the vacation, but
please be patient if you don't appear to be getting a reply !

This seems a good time to mention that last week we reached and passed
100 active recipients of the mailouts :-)  .

Thanks once again to everyone who has contributed anything this term to
the mailouts, or who has otherwise been in contact with me.

The KLF/Orb mailing list will be back in May, 1992 !
