> The KLF : "MU" Japanese CD : full description

This sounds like a *lovely* item !!  From Lazlo :

The KLF: MU                                         [18 Dec 1991]

         CD: 1991 JP (DJ:/EMI TOCP-6916: Y1,800)

The disc includes a 28-page booklet that contains the following:

Tracklist and WHITE ROOM-format credits for all five tracks,
"History Rewritten: The KLF Biography -- Autumn 1991" (Eng/Japanese),
Seven-page "MU" essay by Nobby Style (in Japanese),
         Japanese discography (CD:WHITE ROOM, CD5:"3am", CD3s:"WTIL?" and
             "Justified"),
Complete lyrics (English/Japanese) for all five tracks.

Jimmy lighting cigar in front of "THE <GU>KLF" billboard
Bill/Jimmy in royal attire, Bill w/sceptre, Jimmy with orb (hee
                  hee)
             "Why Sheep?"
Bill in mirrorshades & stormtrooperesque garb behind skull &

Bill/Bimmy in horned white robes with bantam rooster

The jewel box has a blue tray and the disc has the usual T-stack (in
yellow) and follows the usual lettering format, etc.

Lazlo asks for a translation of the "MU" essay from the Japanese in the
booklet : can anyone help out ?

> The Black Room - darker than ever

There have been numerous rumours now that "The Black Room" has been put
on hold *again*, so that Extreme Noise Terror can add their contribtion
to the album.  It was noised that The KLF wanted to do more work with
ENT, but from this rumour it sounds as if they are going to virtually
totally re-record an already almost-complete album.....Lazlo sent the
     following snippet :

       " Al Crawford writes:

         > In case you didn't know, it looks like that KLF vs Extreme Noise
         > Terror wasn't a one off. According to TLn the KLF plan to record
         > an album with them, to be released in March, possibly under the
         > JAMMs banner. "

This ties in with the reference in the recent NME feature to "The Black
Room" with ENT, and the fact that the album is *supposed* to be released
in March (but Hey! Who said The KLF were consistent/reliable?).

> Note from Derek Tiffany (@urich.edu) : the Depeche Mode list

" I got this off the Depeche Mode list and thought you might be
interested. I liked the part about the German parachuter.  :-)

     >  My station played one of those radio shows, called 'On The
     >  Edge' the other night. A CD should exist somewhere for the
     >  completists who must have all.
     >
     >  The show included DM,  the Orb,  and Real People.  'On The
     >  Edge'  never has news,  but basic facts and general  chit-
     >  chat.  What they played:
     >
     >
     >  DM:
     >       Just can't get enough
     >       BTW/Route 66 mega-mix
     >       Death's Door (part; not all)
     >       See You
     >       Master and Servant (Lot of talking while intro was playing)
     >       Personal jesus
     >
     >  Orb:
     >       Little Fluffy Clouds
     >       Star 6 7 8 & 9
     >       Perpetual Dawn
     >
     >  Real People:
     >
     >       (Don't know; I turned if off!)
     >
     >  The Orb part was really interesting.  Alex was saying that
     >  some German dude parachutes to "Little Fluffy Clouds".
     >  Guess he wears a walkman  or  something  as he jumps.  And
     >  Thrash is only 19!  (Alex is 32).

> The KLF in debt : Rough Trade

From the NME, dated 29th February, 1992 :

THE KLF, whose "America-What Time Is Love?" 45 is out this week,
are rumoured to be  $500, 000  in  the red following last year's
      collapse of Rough Trade Distribution.

The sum was cited  last  week  as  part  of a $3 million account
frozen  by  official  administrators  KPMG,  who  took  over the
running of the company nine months  ago.  The KLF,  who are owed
for sales of "What Time Is Love", "3 AM Eternal", "Last Train To
Transcentral" [sic]  and  "The White Room"  are  embroiled  in a
legal battle to secure the money owed to them.

Lacking the finances to  take  the  case  to the High Court,  it
seems likely that they will  be forced to accept an out of court
settlement,  hundred  of  thousands  of  pounds  less  than  the
      original figure.

Despite The KLF's  insolvency,  Bill Drummond  has vowed to sign
former charge  IAN McCOLLOCH,  currently on the east west label.
Drummond is  concerned  about  the  singer's  career;  his  last
single, a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Lover, Lover, Lover", failed
      to chart.

> America:What Time Is Love? promotional variations

An *awful* lot of *very* obscure promotional formats for this latest
UK release have come to light.  Just about all of this information was
'exhumed explored and exploited' by Charles Breen, to whom full credit

> Beats and Pieces

Brett Lindo-Terhaar (@ufl.edu) mentions that in one of the record
collecting magazines he gets I saw an Orb promotional yo-yo offered
    for sale.......

Christian (@uu.se) says that some extracts from 'The Rites Of Mu'
were broadcast on a Swedish youth TV programme........

Lazlo (@unm.edu) says that there is now a double-pack CD offered in
the US, featuring "The White Room" album and the "Justified & Ancient"
CD5 (both the usual US versions . . . same pressings, same booklets even)
in a single slimline double-disc jewel box, catalogue number 07822-18707-2
    on Arista Records US..........

Derek Tiffany (@urich.edu) mentions that the U.S. version of the Orb's
"Peel Sessions" has breaks between the songs........

Bennett McElwee (@uow.edu.au) sends in some Orb remix details :

"   Big Audio Dynamite II -- "The Globe" (US Columbia 44K 74180)

                               3.50  Single Edit
                               4.05  Single Remix Edit
                               7.42  12" Mix
                               5.43  Dub Version
                               9.22  By The Orb
                               4.54  Instrumental

Track 5 remixed by You Know Who.  Pretty Orbish--Mick Jones'
vocals even seem a bit out of place at times...!  Apart from
this it would probably fit right in on "Adventures...".......  "

So will The KLF be Number One in the UK ?  Unlikely....U2 released 'One'
    this week  :(  .........

The Orb are supporting Primal Scream at one of their UK tour dates as the
    guest DJ.........

The UK's Top Of The Pops played the video of "America:What Time Is Love"
this week, preceeded by a short clip of Bill and Jimmy standing behind a
white marker post on Mount Fuji in Japan.  They apologised for not being
in the TOTP studio, 'so here's the video', said Bill.  Jimmy was peeping
out from behind the post, and then hiding his face again......ahem......

Richard Rackham points out that the System 7 "Freedom Fighters" normal
5"CD single replaces Mia(Fisherman Mix) on the special-pack CDS with
"Freedom Fighters Freedom Void Mix).  The backing vocals are by Monday
    Michiru, not Zoe.

> America:What Time Is Love lyrics : full US version

As previously mentioned, the UK version is actually an edit of the
full 'America:What Time Is Love?', so here are the lyrics, by Richard
Rackham, with corrections and additions by Lazlo Nibble.

( Spoken intro  by  Scott Piering,  of Appearing Promotions  and )
( Management, vocals in [] are operatic, {} are Wanda D samples, )
( <> indicates uncertainty about the lyric, // are Glenn Hughes' )
( 'Voice Of Rock' chants,  other vocal samples are double quoted )

"In the year of our Lord Nine-ninety two, the Justified Ancients
of Mu Mu set sail in their long boats on a voyage to rediscover
the lost continent.  After many months on perilous stormy seas,
their search was fruitless.  Just when all seemed lost, they
        discovered ...... America!"

        [America!!]

"The music you are about to experience is a celebration of the one
thousandth anniversary of their founding of this great nation"

        [ continuing America!!s ]

The lyrical prophet, just can't stop it,
The way I drop it and change the topic.
Get hyped to the tongue of a native
        <It's so creative> - KLF made it.

We came a long time ago,
Nine Nine Two - which you did not know.
So if you think that the going gets tough,
        Just remember :

/What Time is Love/  ("Mu Mu")
/What Time is Love/  ("Mu Mu")
/What Time is Love/  ("Mu Mu")

        /I wanna see you sweat/  {I wanna see you sweat}
        /I wanna see you sweat/  {I wanna see you sweat}

        [America]  {I wanna see you sweat}
        [America]

Take the chance to advance and participate,
Or devastate - the rhymes are great.
We had to pass the Pyramid Blaster,
The JAMs are here to put you into rapture.
To make you, shake you, break you, take you,
Right on the path of what they call the Mu Mu.
KLF - Can you get enough ?  Bring the break :

/What Time is Love?/  ("Ooooh Ooooh")
/What Time is Love?/  ("Ooooh Ooooh")
/What Time is Love?/  ("Ooooh Ooooh")
/What Time is Love?/  ("Ooooh Ooooh")

        /I wanna see you sweat/  {I wanna see you sweat}
        /I wanna see you sweat/  {I wanna see you sweat}

/Be young, be free, the American way/
/Be young, be free, the American way/

        [America]
        [America]
        [America]
        [America]

        Ohhhhhh Get Higher
        Ohhhhhh Get Higher

/Be young, be free, the American way/
/Be young, be free, and <rich>/

        "Boston, Philly, Seattle, 'Frisco,
        <Dayton>, Toledo, Detroit, Maine,
        Phoenix, Vegas, <Reno>, Portland,
        Salt Lake, <Tulsa>, Denver, Jackson,
        Dallas, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia,
        St Louis, Memphis, <Salem>, Raleigh,
        L.A., Houston, Brooklyn, New York,
        <Akron>, <Miami>, Chicago, <Compton>,
        We Love You"

        The final chapter, <Compose-thetic>, poetic,
When I've done, this calls for anaesthetic.
Make way for a positive thing,
A theme, a dream and a man might sing.

We came a long time ago,
Nine Nine Two which you did not know.
So if you think that the going gets tough,
        Just remember :

/What Time is Love?/  ("Oooooh Oooooh")
/What Time is Love?/  ("Oooooh Oooooh")

        /I wanna see you sweat/  {I wanna see you sweat}
        /I wanna see you sweat/  {I wanna see you sweat}

        [America]  ("Mu Mu")
        [America]  ("Mu Mu")
        [America]
        [America]  ("Mu Mu")

/What Time is Love?/  ("Mu Mu")
/What Time is Love?/  ("Mu Mu")

        /What Time is Love?/

        /Aaaah! Yeahhhh yeah!/

/Be young, be free, the American way/
/Be young, be free, the American way/

        [America]  ("Mu Mu")
        [America]  ("Mu Mu")

        /Ahhhhhhhhh - Yeahhhh yeah!/
        /Ahhhhhhhhh - Yeahhhh yeah!/

        [America]  ("Mu Mu")
        [America]  ("Mu Mu")

"I'd like to thank the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, furthermore
known as the JAMs. Also known as the K.L.F."

"Good Night America - We Love You...."

"Thank You, United States of America!
All right, Y'all be good tonight!"

"Were those guys for real?  I mean, whats with all this
Justified Ancients of Mu Mu shit ?"

Here's a piece of completely irrelevant trivia that was in a letter a
friend sent to me after obtaining the US CD of America.  It refers to
one of the featured vocalists on the track, the 'Voice Of Rock' Glenn
Hughes.  He has worked with Deep Purple, Trapeze, and put out a solo
album, which at the time was the longest recording to be put onto CD,
at over 70 minutes, and remained so for a couple of years :) .

> Finally.....

Can anyone confirm (UK people probably) if there was a cover version of
"Doctorin' The Tardis" by James Last (who??!!!) on his album "Dance,
    Dance, Dance", released November 1988 on UK Polydor, JLTV(C) 1, 837 453-2
please?  According to a catalogue I was using a few months back, there
    is.......!
