INTRODUCTION
This document lists some of the available tools for converting between and
among various graphic formats. It is certainly not complete, and
additions are welcome. Many of the descriptions are based on direct
experience, while others are based on advertising literature or write-ups
in the press. Most of the full-featured conversion packages also provide
on-screen viewing. (Hijaak is a notable exception)
Also shown are selected popular packages that can use graphics, with the
formats accepted as input (IMPORT) and those that each package can generate
as output (EXPORT).
Conversion programs for both vector-based and bit-mapped (raster) graphics
utilities are included here. However, many of the listed programs only
handle the rasterized version of formats that provide both raster graphics
and vector (scalable) graphics (such as Word Perfect's .WPG format). In
addition, the more advanced features available with some formats (such as
full .TIF and .EPS) may not be acceptable to some of these programs.
Some of the packages (particularly the older ones) may not support the
GIF89 standard -- no distinction is made in this listing.
Another class of programs that can be thought of as conversion programs are
those that trace bitmaps to create editable vector images. These include
Adobe Illustrator, Corel Trace, Arts & Letters Editor, and others.

Miscellaneous
There is an assortment of single-purpose conversion programs that have
been available on many bulletin boards for quite a while. Their names
usually reflect their purpose, and have often been changed (for example,
CLP2GMI, the original name, is often found as PIC2GMI). Different
programs, performing the same functions, may appear on different boards
with the same name.
Some of these are:
CLP2GMI
Converts PC-Paint Plus Clip files (.PIC) to GEM .IMG format and
reverses the image. The PC-Paint clip file must have the .PIC file
extension or the utility will not work.

In general, any imported image can be exported into any bitmap format, only
vector graphics (imported or created) can be exported in vector formats. The
built-in tracing capability or CorelTrace (q.v.) can create a vector version
of bitmapped images.
