  Some people have been unable to reconcile the world

as science appears to show it to be, and their narrow

interpretation of some translations of the Bible.

In order to deal with their conflict, some of these

people have created a pseudo-science called

"Scientific Creationism" (this name is called an oxymoron

like "jumbo shrimp" or "military intelligence").

  Most of "Scientific Creationism" is an attempt to falsify

the central ideas of geology, biology, and astronomy. One

of the vast collection of creationist files on the Internet

is 17EVOL.txt - 17 EVIDENCES AGAINST EVOLUTION by Kevin

Martin. It is good in that lists many of the goofy blunders

of creationism in one document. I will respond to each of the

17 "Evidences" in a separate uploaded file. I will do this to

 a) shorten the length and b) it takes a while to gather the data.

   1. MOON DUST

    Meteoritic dust falls on the earth continuously, adding up to

thousands, if not millions, of tons of dust per year.  Realizing

this, and knowing that the moon also had meteoritic dust piling

up for what they thought was millions of years, N.A.S.A. scien-

tists were worried that the first lunar ship that landed would

sink into the many feet of dust which should have accumulated.

However, only about one-eight of an inch of dust was found, indi-

cating a young moon.

    Meteoritic material contributes nickel to the oceans.  Taking

the amount of nickel in the oceans and the supply from meteoritic

dust yields an age figure for the earth of just several  thousand

years, not the millions (or billions) expressed by evolutionists.

This, and the lack of meteoritic dust piles on the earth, lend to

the belief in a young earth.

>   A) Moon dust mistake:                                            <

>      Before the first spacecraft orbited the Earth in the          <

>   1950's, scientists had to use indirect ways to measure the       <

>   rate that spacedust falls to Earth. They went to mountaintops,   <

>   collected air samples, and measured the amount of what LOOKED    <

>   like space dust. Using the amount they measured, 35 years ago    <

>   SOME scientists thought a deep layer of dust would be on         <

>   the Moon. (This shows how hopelessly outdated most creationist   <

>    arguments are.)                                                 <

>      As it turned out, these mountaintop samples were completely   <

>   overloaded with material spewed from steel mills,                <

>   volcanoes, etc. They were totally useless. Once satellites       <

>   started gathering real samples from space, it showed that about  <

>   a foot of material would pile up in 4 billion years or so. What  <

>     Stuff doesn't gently drift down onto the moon like             <

>   snowflakes. Because there is no air on the Moon, particles       <

>   ranging from microscopic to miles across slam into the Moon at   <

>   speeds over 75,000 miles per hour! Drill samples brought back    <

>   by astronauts show the first 50 feet or so down from the Moon's  <

>   surface is a pulverized mixture of shattered Moon and space      <

>   rock called REGOLITH. It has the general texture of crunchy      <

>   snow mixed with boulders of various sizes. Careful analysis      <

>   of this material showed it contained about the equal of one      <

>   foot of space material.  Bingo!                                  <

>     Just because footprints on the Moon are only an inch or so     <

>   deep DOES NOT mean the dust is an inch deep. When you walk on    <

>   the beach you leave shallow footprints even if the sand is       <

>   B) Nickel in ocean mistake:                                      <

>     Mr Martin claims the Earth is young because the ocean holds    <

>   only a few thousand years supply of nickel from meteor dust.     <

>   This is because chemical and physical processes REMOVE the       <

>   nickel from the water (for example: solubility, precipitation,   <

>   etc). Consider this: vast amounts of aluminum  wash into the     <

>   oceans from the eroding dry land. Measurements show that a       <

>   hundred years of erosion would supply ALL the aluminum in the    <

>   world's oceans. Using Mr Martin's logic, the Earth is a          <

>   HUNDRED YEARS OLD!  Of course, various processes remove the      <

>   aluminum, making it (and nickel) useless for dating.             <

>   3) Piles of meteor dust on Earth's surface:                      <

>      Because only about a foot of meteor material has fallen in    <

>   is constantly recycling, one WOULD NOT find piles of space dust. <
