Balaclava pattern

 Balaclava pattern

From: (TTrimbath)

I just measured a balaclava I made last year using my husbands as a

starting point.  By the way, his was too baggy on top for me so I

made it tighter in the head area.  This description includes that

modification.  Also, I made this from single sided fleece, and I think

a heavier weight fleece will need to be a bit bigger.

To make a pattern for an adult balaclava, start by making a 9.5 inch

circle on a piece of paper.  Mark it's center point.  Draw a line thru

the center straight up and down.   This is just a reference line so I

can describe some other lines. We'll call it "the vertical line".  The

top of the circle is the top of the head.  Draw a line, 4 inches from

the vertical line, and parallel to it, from the bottom part of the

circle down.  This is the back of the neck.  This line should extend

down 11.5 inches from the center of the circle.  Draw a line

perpendicular to the vertical line here.  That is the bottom of the

balaclava.  Draw another parallel line 6 inches from the vertical

line, on the other side of the circle. This is the front of the neck. It

won't intersect the circle.  That's OK.  For the face hole, draw a

horizontal line thru the center of the circle, and measure 1 inch up.

This is the top of the face hole.  Just mark it for now.   Measure 2.5

inches towards the center of the circle  from that point, and 1.5

inches down.  that is the side of the face hole.  Now measure down

2.25 inches from the side point, and intersect with the front of neck

line.  That  is the bottom of the face hole.  Now connect those three

face holes with a "C" shaped curve.  It will slant downward on the

bottom side.

To make the balaclava, put the front of the neck line on the fold of

the fabric.  Then add seam allowances to the other edges and cut.  To

finish the face hole, I serged the edge adding in thin elastic banding

so it would return to the shape after it got stretched out.
