Ultravox Discography
--------------------

This discography purports to list the releases, personnel etc of the group
Ultravox from its inception until its demise. At the moment it has a number
of gaps. Any help in filling these will be much appreciated. Areas
particularly in need of attention are :-

1) Missing formats
2) Track times
3) Foreign (i.e. non UK) releases. At the moment all catalogue numbers are
   UK unless otherwise indicated.
4) Trivia (ie what the hell has happened to Chris Cross since the split?)

We'd like, if possible, to restrict the discography to material that has at
some time been freely available. So while this includes all the normal
releases and various limited edition bits'n'pieces it doesn't include promo
items and DJ-only remixes (eg Razormaid "White China" set).

All mail regarding corrections, additions etc should be sent to :-

awrc=uvox@dcs.ed.ac.uk

Note the `awrc=uvox' username - this'll allow me to get to mail related to
the discography more quickly or at least ensure it doesn't get mixed up
with my day to day mail. Alternatively, send mail with just the word
Ultravox as the subject line. If you've somehow come across this
discography in a printed form and don't have access to electronic mail,
drop me a line at...

Section I - Tiger Lily

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Foxx, real name Dennis Leigh, was born in Chorley, Lancashire,
England. In 1973 he formed Tiger Lily after placing advertisements
in the UK music press. The band personnel were as
follows :-

John Foxx (b. Dennis Leigh) - vocals.
Chris Cross (b. Christopher Allen) - bass.
Warren Cann - drums.
Steve Shears - guitar.
Billy Currie - viola and keyboards.

They released only one single, a cover of "Ain't Misbehavin'" which was
used as the theme music for a porn movie of the same name.

In 1976 after a number of name changes (The Zips, The Innocents, London
Soundtrack, Fire Of London) they signed to Island records as Ultravox!
(their exclamation mark, not mine) .The first material to see vinyl was
"The Wild, The Beautiful And The Damned" which appeared on an Island
sampler. Anyone got details of that sampler?

Section III - Ultravox Mk II

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the departure of John Foxx to pursue a solo career in 1979 and
exhausted by a tour of the US, the group faltered on the verge of
disbanding. Robin Simon also left (he later toured with Magazine and
worked with Foxx), leaving just three members. Billy Currie, through his
work with the studio synth-disco group Visage had become acquainted with
James `Midge' Ure, ex-Slik and Rich Kids vocalist. Despite some
reservations on the part of the existing members of the band, Ure became
the new vocalist.

It's not known if a video was produced for this single.

the chart for a full 72 weeks and peaked at number 3.

After the success of the previous single, "Passing Strangers" was something
of a flop. It entered the UK singles chart on 18th October 1980 but
remained on it for only 4 weeks, peaking at number 57.

The video for this single is an excellent example of early 80s new
romantic video style. It features the group (clad in European grey)
menacing (or at least appearing to menace) a couple, he clad in a suit
and made up in true new romantic style, she made up and pale. They run
around a deserted factory and an urban wasteland and eventually sink up
to their necks in quicksand. Whatever.

The most successful Ultravox single of them all, "Vienna" entered the UK
singles chart on 17th January 1981 and remained there for 14 weeks. It
peaked at number 2, being kept from the number 1 slot by Joe Dolce's
"Shaddap You Face". Yep, it was kept off the top by a novelty record by
a one-hit wonder who has never been heard of since. The track "Herr X" on
the 12" is a German language version of Mr X from the album.

The video remains one of Ultravox's best, and attempts to portray the
grandeur and decadence of 1930s Vienna. Largely shot in Vienna, it's
got lots of mist-filled streets, a masqued ball and fits the song
perfectly. It must've cost a small fortune to make and remains to this
day one of the best music videos I've ever seen.

Another posthumous release from Island, this time in an attempt to cash

charts on 28th March 1981 and remained there for 4 weeks, peaking at
number 33.

It's not known if Island's raiding of the archives extended to putting
together some sort of video for this.

This is an Ultravox Mk I release but is placed in this section to maintain
chronological consistency.

Rather an odd video that exemplifies some of the weird videos that were
around at the beginning of the 80s. Highlights include Ure running down
a corridor with latex walls through which arms are trying to grab him,
Ure drowning in a car filled with water and several swimmers half buried
on a beach. At least this one seems to have a theme - insanity. Some nice
video technique too.

Entered the UK album chart on 19th September 1981. In a 23 week run on the
chart it reached a peak position of number 4.

There exist two different covers for this album - one is a simple,
two-dimensional geometric representation of a `face' in two colours (maroon
and gold?), the other (later) cover is a painting of the aforementioned
`face' set in a 3 dimensional geometric landscape. The later cover is far
more common than the earlier which may only have been used on the initial
pressings of the LP and cassette. Anyone know the full details? Later LPs
(in the UK at least) and the compact disc feature the second cover.

The video is one that I personally find a little dull. Various people
(Cann as reporter, for example) see a blinding white light (a revelation?)
and wander off, eventually meeting together. Also features women in
flowing robes waving their arms about. Anyone care to try and explain it
in more detail?

"Hymn" entered the UK singles chart on 27th November 1982. It remained on
the chart for 11 weeks and peaked at number 11.

The video for "Hymn" was particularly clever and showed Cann (the film
fan), Currie (the political activist), Cross (the office junior) and Ure
(the struggling musician) being given their hearts desire after signing
their souls away to a mysterious figure with glowing eyes. So Cann becomes
a film star, Currie becomes a major political figure, Cross becomes head of
a major company and Ure becomes a pop star. Then the satanic figure comes
to collect his side of the bargain... The moral? Never trust anyone with
glowing eyes.

"Shock. Horror. Ultravox in porno video scandal!" Well, not exactly, but
I'd wager this video was never shown on Top Of The Pops. Soft focus shots
of a nude woman being washed, plus a dance sequence with two female dancers
(one dressed as a man) and breasts popping out of clothing all over the
place. Arty rather than sleazy though.

The video had a Chinese theme and alternated between shots of the group
in a set hung with Chinese revolutionary art and a story about forbidden
love in revolutionary China in which the two young lovers solve their
quandary by leaping off a cliff together.

Concert sound production by John Hudson. All tracks recorded live at
Hammersmith Odeon, December 1982.

Entered the UK album chart on the 22nd October 1983. It reached a peak
position of number 9 and remained on the chart for 15 weeks.

_Monument_ was a live album/video of the December 1982 concert at the
Hammersmith Odeon. Despite the credits above (taken from the sleeve notes),
"Monument" appears to be the studio version used as the B-side of the
"Hymn" single. It doesn't feature in the concert itself but is used as
backing music during an introduction on the video that describes the design
of the stage sets and the recording of _Quartet_.

The video itself isn't outstanding. Aside from its shortness, it spoils the
concert feel by interspersing shots from the videos for most songs with the
live footage. The one highspot surrounds the extended version of "The
Voice", with the Warren Cann drum solo from "The Song (We Go)" spliced onto
the end and the rest of the band each playing a single electronic drum pad.

Entered the UK singles chart on 11th February 1984. Remained on the chart
for 6 weeks and peaked at number 27.

The video was the debut of the new Ultravox "Scottish fishermen" look,
with Ure sporting designer stubble and a woolly hat, Cann sporting designer
stubble and Chris Cross looking like something the cat dragged in. The
video features the group leaping about and playing their instruments
amongst some standing stones, interspersed with brief glimpses of their
older videos. How did they plug everything in?

week at number 74 in the week beginning 4th August 1984.

The video centres around an accident at a nuclear power plant. Security
guard Warren Cann and scientist Chris Cross are sitting around dozing
when alarms etc go off. Ordinary bloke Ure is driving home when he hears
the news and fights to get home to family in the ensuing chaos (in which
priest Currie is doing his bit to help out). Ure gets home, tucks in the
kiddies and gets physical with Mrs Ure until they are blown to bits by
the nuclear explosion.

The video continued the Scottish theme begun with "One Small Day". The band
head off to a wee Scottish island and proceed to get off with the local
ladies. Time comes for them to leave and many tears are shed etc but Ure
changes his mind and stays behind with his bonnie highland lassie. Awwww,
isn't that nice?

Entered the UK singles chart on the 20th October 1984. Peaked at number 12
in a chart run lasting 9 weeks.

The video for "Love's Great Adventure" is one of the best they ever did.
Ure waiting for girlfriend (is this the same person as Ure's wife in the
"Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" video?) starts daydreaming. The ensuing
daydream features a pause for Ure to get his breath back, Warren Cann as
another explorer, Currie as a priest and Cross as some sort of jungle wild
man. An entertaining video in which Ure gets the girl and everyone lives
happily ever after. An adventure film condensed into three minutes.

"White China (Live)" recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in June, 1984.

Section IV - Ultravox Mk III

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Internal pressures within the group led to the departure of Warren Cann.
Exactly what these pressures were isn't too clear (I've yet to see an
interview say exactly what the problem was) but it seems to be the case
that Cann didn't like the direction the group was taking (more or less
turning into Midge Ure's backing band) and there were also differences
over the musical direction of the band. After the departure of Cann, no
regular drummer was found although Mark Brzezicki (of Big Country) more or
less filled this role on _U-Vox_.

Section V - Ultravox Mk IV

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a world tour in 1986/7 and an appearance at Live Aid, Ultravox went
into limbo. Although the band never officially disbanded, it became clear
as time went by that they were not going to reform. Billy Currie put
together a new group called U-Vox consisting of himself, early Ultravox
guitarist Robin Simon and a vocalist (name unknown) but was forced by fan
pressure to stop using the name, and the group changed its name to
Humania before disbanding.

However, in 1992, Currie acquired the rights to the name Ultravox and put
together a new Ultravox, consisting of himself and vocalist/guitarist
Tony Fenelle. At the time of writing one single has been released and an
album is in the pipeline.

Section VI - Related Side Projects

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This section is intended to cover projects that qualify neither for the
main discography or for the solo supplements. This more or less restricts
it to releases involving two or more members of the group. Strictly
speaking Visage should fall into this category but, due to the number of
Visage releases, there is a separate Visage section.

Section VIII - Visage

Although Visage should really have their own discography, I've decided to
include those releases that involved Midge Ure and Billy Currie - the first
two albums, all associated singles and the compilation album.

Visage arose from the wreckage of the late 70s `supergroup' The Rich Kids.
This group, which both Ure and Egan had been members of, disbanded leaving
Ure with several hours of unused studio time. This he donated to Steve
Strange, who was looking to record some `futuristic disco' for his Blitz
club. The studio group they put together became Visage and the track
recorded in that session was a cover of Zager and Evans' In The Year 2525.

Again, lots of gaps, help filling them would be appreciated.

Personnel at various times included :-

Steve Strange
Midge Ure
Billy Currie
Dave Formula
Rusty Egan
Barry Adamson
S. Barnacle
John McGeoch
