- League news:

**
The National Hockey League officially canceled four games for each team
from its 84-game regular season schedule as the collective bargaining
impasse between owners and players reached its 24th day Monday, October
24. The NHL said each team would lose two home games and two road games.
No decision will be announced as to which games are canceled until a start
date for the season is determined.

Draft:
The 1995 draft will be held in Winnipeg.  The 1996 draft will be held in
St. Louis.

The NHL adopted a lottery for its annual entry draft, beginning with the
1995 draft.
A complicated system ensures that the team with the fewest points ends
up with a 30 percent chance of getting the first overall pick and is
guaranteed of picking no lower than second.  Whatever team is drawn can
move up by no more than four positions in the draft. Therefore, only the
five worst teams have a chance at picking first. If one of the second-,
third-, fourth- or fifth-worst teams win the draw to pick first, the last-
place team will pick second.
If the sixth-worst team is drawn first, it moves up four places and
picks second. The first pick would then go to the worst team.  Likewise,
if the 10th-worst team is drawn first, it would pick sixth. The first
pick, again, would go to the worst team.
Under the weighted-draw system for non-playoff teams only, the team with
the fewest points has a 30 percent chance of being drawn; the team with
the second-fewest has a 21 percent chance; and the team with the third-
fewest points has a 15.1 percent chance.  The team with the fourth-fewest
points has a 10.9 percent chance; the team with the fifth-fewest points
has an 8 percent chance; the team with the sixth-fewest points has a 5.9
percent chance; and the team with the seventh-fewest points has a 4.2
percent chance.  The team with the eighth-fewest points has a 2.8 percent
chance; the team with the ninth-fewest points has a 1.6 percent chance;
and the team with 10th-fewest points has a 0.5 percent chance.
Only one team will be drawn and placed in the appropriate spot.
Everybody else picks in reverse order of the team's finish.

League Leadership:
Gary Bettman is commissioner of the National Hockey League.
Former Hartford Whalers President and General Manager Brian Burke is the
league's executive vice president and director of hockey operations.

Rule changes:

Rule 20D: A stick measurement can be called for in overtime.  However, a
stick measurement can't be asked for after the winning goal has been
scored.

Rule 42B: A player leaves the penalty box prematurely receives an
automatic three-game suspension.

Rule 45D: With respect to checks from behind, a player doesn't have to be
checked into the boards or into the goal itself.  Any severe check from
behind as the rule reads ("Any player who cross-checks or pushes a player
from behind, when the player is unable to defend himself") will result in
a major and a game misconduct.

Rule 54A: If a player removes his sweater before getting into a fight, the
instigator penalty will be imposed. (Any player deemed to be the
instigator of fisticuffs shall be assessed a game misconduct.)

Rule 87: The video goal judge can be consulted on issues regarding the
game clock (such as how much time remained when the referee stopped play.)

Playoffs: The 2-3-2 format that was instituted last year was revised so
that in first-, second-, or third-round series involving Central and
Pacific Division teams, the team with the better record will have the
choice of using a 2-3-2 or 2-2-1-1-1 format.  In addition, the team with
the better record opens at home, whichever format it chooses to use.  The
Stanley Cup Finals will remain a 2-2-1-1-1 format.

Ice resurfacing: The use of two Zambonis will be required for resurfacing
between periods.  This will result in improved ice surfaces, the NHL
governors said.

Olympics:
The International Ice Hockey Federation announced agreement with the NHL
on an arrangement aimed at closer ties. The two groups put together a
package of accords that will pave the way for regulated player transfers,
more Olympic participation for NHL players, the creation of a European
Super League and expanded international competitions. Schedules will be
coordinated to allow NHL players to take part in the Olympics and in the
World Championships.

NHLPA:
Mike Gartner of the New York Rangers is the president of the National
Hockey League Players' Association.

Miscellaneous:
The Hockey Hall of Fame added Yves Fortier, Bob Goodenow, Bill Hay, J.
Bruce Pope, Harry Sinden, Steve Solomon and Murray Costello to the board
of directors.

The 1996 All-Star Game will be held in Boston.

The Canadian Hockey League has set up a BBS. Jim Price, the CHL Director
of Information, has had it going since about February 1993.
In addition to up-to-date stats on the CHL throughout the season, NHL
Draft lists, etc.  The CHLBBS also has a conference set up for the
Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.
The CAHA conference contains information of National Championships, its
Hockey Resource Centre items, coaching, refereeing, registration figures,
National Junior Team lists, up-to-date news releases, almost everything
you would want to know on Canadian amateur hockey.
The number for the CHLBBS line is (416) 299-6839, and voice support at
(416) 298-3523.  It is in DOS format using PROCOMM, so your settings are 8
data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity and echo off.

The Canadian Hockey League BBS, which as been operating for the past
year as a pay-per-use service for media, National Hockey League personnel
and other hockey organizations, has introduced FREE public access for
hockey fans.
Our free service includes standings and scores from the three major
junior leagues in the CHL as well as NHL information, numerous other
hockey and sports related files, message areas etc.
You can sign up for our free service (plus examine the other benefits of
a full membership) on-line by dialing (416) 299-6839.

11. USENET Hockey Pool

The USENET Hockey Pool is in its 7th year of operation.  Last season,
there were 261 teams from literally all over the world: every Canadian
province, about 30 of the 50 U.S. states, and nine other countries in
Europe and Asia.
The pool operates like a stock market.  You start off with 1000 points
to "buy" the players of your team.  You can sell and buy players during
the season based upon their current point performance.  Transactions are
made by sending email messages, and standings are posted to
rec.sport.hockey on a weekly basis.
This year's pool will begin in early September, with an entry deadline
of October 5.  Send email to Andrew Scott (andrew@idacom.hp.com) for more
information.

13. Answers to some frequently asked questions:

Q: Why are the Montreal Canadiens called the Habs?
A: According to the magazine "Les Canadiens" (Number 2 of the 92-93
season), the following is the origin of the nickname "Habitants/Habs":
"Partial credit for this nickname actually goes to an American.
Reporter Tex Rickard had picked up on a rumour (a false one, of course)
someone had told him about the 'H' on the Canadiens' uniform. It seems
that someone mentioned that it stood for "habitant", a French word that in
those days was used to denote the farmers of Quebec.
"'This guy told Tex that the French-speaking players on the team came
from the country, and since they were "farmers", they were therefore
"habitants!"' recalls Camille Desroches. 'Habs' is simply a short form of
the word."
"That was back in the mid-twenties. The Canadiens had just won the
1923-24 Stanley Cup, and two teams from New York were just joining the NHL
(the Americans in 25 and the Rangers in 26). To understand Rickard's
thinking, it helps to remember that this was also a period of intense
development in a number of more remote regions of Quebec..."

Q: Why is the Montreal Canadiens logo a large C with an H within it?
**
A: When Club de Hockey Canadien was founded for the 1909/10 season, the
uniform consisted of a navy blue sweater with white narrow bands at the
shoulders connected to a band across the chest. The center of the chest
band had a white "C" on it. The pants were white and the stockings were
red.
When the team was sold the following year, it was renamed Club Athletique
Canadien. The sweater is now red with a green Maple Leaf in the center
bearing a gothic "C" in its center. The uniform was changed once again for
the 1911/12 season. The Maple Leaf on the sweater remained, but the
sweater now had blue, white, and red stripes. The "C" was replaced with
"CAC".
The Canadiens uniform was redesigned for the 1914/15 season. It had a
similar design to today's road uniform. The center crest had a "CA"
instead of the famous "CH".
The team reverted back to Club de Hockey Canadien for the 1916/17 season.
The crest was now a big "C" and inside a smaller "H", to represent "Club
de Hockey Canadien".
Other minor alterations have taken place over time, but the traditional
"CHC" has remained.

Q: What is the most informative hockey publication?
A: The Hockey News is preferred by most North American hockey fans. It is
a weekly journal with up-to-date info.
Phone: 800-268-7793 (Canada and US)
Phone/fax: +44 483 776 141 (UK and rest of Europe)

Q: How does a 5-minute power-play count in the penalty killing stats in
the NHL?
A: If X goals are scored, then the team gets credit for X goals in X+1
chances.

Q: How is +/- computed in the NHL?
A: First, +/- only applies to skaters. Except for a power-play goal, when
a goal is scored, each skater on the ice for the scoring team is given a
+, and each skater on the ice for the other team is given a -. Short-
handed goals do count for +/-.

 Q: What is the five-hole?
A: The space between a goalie's pads. There are five major scoring zones:
(1) upper left corner of goal, (2) upper right, (3) lower left, (4) lower
right, and (5) five-hole.

Q: What is the meaning of throwing an octopus on the ice?
A: This tradition began in Detroit in the 1950's when two best-of-seven
series were required to win the Stanley Cup.

Q: Who was the first woman to play in an NHL game?
A: Manon Rheaume, a 20-year-old goaltender, became the first woman ever
to play in an NHL game on September 23, 1992 when she started in net for
the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning in an exhibition against the St. Louis
Blues. Rheaume played the first period before 8,223 at the 10,400-seat
Expo Hall on the Florida State Fairgrounds and allowed two goals on nine
shots. She left with the score tied 2-2, although the Lightning ultimately
lost the game, 6-4.

Q: Who is the commissioner of the NHL?
A: Gary Bettman, vice president and general counsel of the National
Basketball Association, was named commissioner of the National Hockey
League, Friday, December 11, 1992. Bettman joined the NBA in 1981 as
assistant general counsel. He became the league's chief legal officer in
September of 1984. A New York resident, Bettman graduated from Cornell
University in 1974 and from New York University School of Law in 1977.

Q: How many professional hockey leagues are there in North America?
**
A: Seven: National, American, International, East Coast, Central,
Colonial and Sunshine Hockey Leagues.

Q: Where can I get an NHL rule book?
 A: Write to:
    NHL Publishing
    194 Dovercourt Road
    Toronto, Ontario
    M6J 3C8
    CANADA

Q: What does the "A" on a player's jersey stand for?
A: The "A" on a player's jersey signifies that he is an "alternate"
captain.  A player wearing a "C" is, of course, the captain.

Q: What is the origin of the term "hat trick?"
A: Hat trick - Three successive performances of a feat by the same
individual in a contest.  The oldest use is probably in cricket, where a
hat trick is the dismissal by the bowler of 3 batsmen with 3 consecutive
balls, for which the bowler apparently received a bonus of a new hat.  The
term is widely used in hockey and soccer to indicate the scoring of 3
goals by one individual in a single game.  Originally the hat trick was
the scoring of 3 consecutive unanswered goals (commonly referred to as a
"natural" hat trick), but they need not be consecutive or unanswered to
qualify as a hat trick today.  The term has also been used of a jockey's
riding a winner in 3 consecutive races or winners in an annual race for 3
consecutive years.  A notable exception to the 3 successive performances
which characterize a hat trick in other sports is its occasional use in
baseball to mean that a player has hit for the cycle - a single, double,
triple, and home run in one game. Source:  Webster's Sports Dictionary.
G. & C. Merriam Company (Springfield, MA):  1976.

Q: When did the NHL begin using a five-minute overtime period?
A: According to the NHL Guide & Record Book, the five-minute overtime
period started in the '83-'84 season.

Q: What's the story concerning Jim Schoenfeld, Don Koharski and "Have
another doughnut!"?
A: In the Wales Conference finals in 1988, the coach of the New Jersey
Devils was very upset with the calls of referee Koharski. At the end of
the game, the two met in the runway to the dressing room. Besides the
arguing, Schoenfeld was accused of bumping Koharski (he may have tripped
by catching his skate off of the runway carpet). More words followed, with
Koharski claiming that Schoenfeld pushed him and Schoenfeld calling him
"You fat pig! Go have another Doughnut!" etc. The result was a one game
suspension of Schoenfeld by the league. NJ management challenged the
suspension by going outside the league and getting a court injunction
rendering the suspension invalid (remember this is playoff time). The
referees for the next game decided not to call the game, and after an hour
delay, New Jersey's off-ice officials dressed and the game was played. NJ
beat Boston in that game. Schoenfeld served the suspension the next game
since the game was in NJ. Boston ended up winning the series 4-3.

11. USENET Hockey Pool

The USENET Hockey Pool is in its 7th year of operation.  Last season,
there were 261 teams from literally all over the world: every Canadian
province, about 30 of the 50 U.S. states, and nine other countries in
Europe and Asia.
The pool operates like a stock market.  You start off with 1000 points
to "buy" the players of your team.  You can sell and buy players during

Q: What is the most informative hockey publication?

For skating discussions, go to the newsgroup rec.skate.

Some sites get another hockey group, called clari.sports.hockey. c.s.h
consists of the AP articles that are related to hockey, including game
results, summaries, scores, standings, etc.  Much of the information in
the NHL team news section comes from this newsgroup.
