Paris 1572. It is the eve of the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre, when the
Catholic Queen Mother, Catherine de Medici, planned the slaughter of all
French Protestants. The Doctor goes to visit Charles Preslin and Steven
meets a group of Hugenots from the Protestant Admiral de Coligny's house-
hold. He rescues a servant girl, Anne Chaplet, who has overheard plans for
the massacre.
The Catholic Abbot of Amboise visits the house and he is the double of
the Doctor. Steven follows him and overhears the plan to kill the Admiral.
The attempt fails and the Abbot is condemned to death.
The Doctor returns and he and Steven escape Paris as the massacre begins.
Steven is angry that the Doctor did nothing to prevent the massacre and the
Doctor reminds him that, callous as it may seem, he cannot intervene to
change established history.
Stopping in the 20th century, the pair are joined in the final episode
by Dodo Chaplet.
