Sportsman of the year

holds the title of Illinois Sportsman of the Year, winning the
state's outdoorsman decathlon staged at the Aurora Sportsmen's Club
and at Silver Springs State Park Sept. 26©28 as part of National
Hunting and Fishing Days festivities.
Á ÁVik's victory ©© by a margin of just 70 points out a possible
10,000 ©© netted him awards including a $1,500 first©place prize,
the Director's Cup trophy and a lifetime Illinois Sportsman's
License for hunting and fishing.
Á ÁRunner©up was Lloyd Shaffer of Lawrenceville, who received a
$500 prize. Finishing third, fourth and fifth for prizes of $250,
$150 and $100 respectively were Chuck Roberts of Yorkville, Brad
Evans of Jacksonville and Stephen Scott of Forsyth.
Á ÁOther winners of individual events were Paul Fiedler of
Riverton, Mike Umbdenstock of Evansville, Gary Cooper of South
Jacksonville, Brian Kieninger of Godfrey, Stanley Brown of
Lawrenceville, Stan Hubbard of Bristol and Ron Boeser of Mattoon.
Winners of each individual event received $50 prizes.
Á ÁThirty©six contestants competed in knowledge of trapping and
natural resources law, tree identification, wildlife
identification, fly casting, rod and reel casting, archery, skeet,
muzzleloader and pistol shooting. The ten top scorers after the
first nine areas of competition participated in a timed trapªsetting final event.
Á ÁPrevious winners are Gene Evans of South Jacksonville (1996),
Mike Evans of Jacksonville (1995), J.L. Hargis of Ellis Grove
(1994), Pete Ochs of Springfield (1993), Steve Wunderle of
Carterville (1992) and Terry Wunderle of Mason City (1991).
Contest rules prevent past state winners from competing in other
