What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version FINAL (8/27/04): The very last version of this FAQ. Version 1.2 (12/27/01): Made a spelling correction, as well as correcting the value of the Big/Medium/Small Pearl treasures. Version 1.15 (11/29/01): I made a spelling correction, as well as added a small bit of information, as noted in the Credits section. Version 1.1 (11/28/01): I redid part of the walkthrough to include the two "secret" rooms as part of your path, just for the sake of completion the first time through! Also, I added some little things, such as the list of how much each treasure is worth, as well as a couple more secrets for that appropriate section of the guide. Version 1.05 (11/26/01): Added some bits of information here and there, thanks to "me frog" and T.J. Docherty! Version 1.0 (11/24/01): The walkthrough has been completed, making this guide complete! I still have some tidbits here and there to add, so they'll be included with future updates. Version 0.7 (11/23/01): At this point, the walkthrough covers all the way up to the beginning of Area 4! Also, several things here and there were added as well. Version 0.1 (11/20/01): The first version of this FAQ. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= One of the first launch titles for the Nintendo Gamecube is Luigi's Mansion, and it's the first adventure game that actually STARS Luigi! The plot is predictable though; Luigi has to rescue his brother Mario, who is trapped within a mansion that is infested with ghosts! Armed with a vacuum and a flashlight, along with the help of the wacky scientist Professor E. Gadd, you must infiltrate the place of ghosts and free Mario! Although the game is a little bit short, it's still worth playing, especially for those looking for a decent launch title besides Star Wars, among others, to play! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Story -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= One day, Luigi received an unexpected message: You've won a huge mansion! Naturally, he got very excited and called his brother, Mario. "Mario? It's me, Luigi. I won myself a big mansion! Meet me there and we'll celebrate, what do you say?" Luigi tried to follow the map to his new mansion, but the night was dark, and he became hopelessly lost in an eerie forest along the way. Finally, he came upon a gloomy mansion on the edge of the woods. According to the map, this mansion seemed to be the only one Luigi was looking for. As soon as Luigi set foot in the mansion, he started to feel nervous. Mario, who should have arrived first, was nowhere to be seen. Not only that, but there were ghosts in the mansion! Suddenly, a ghost lunged at Luigi! "Mario! Help meee!" That's when a strange old man with a vacuum cleaner on his back appeared out of nowhere! This strange fellow managed to rescue Luigi from the ghosts, then the two of them escaped... It just so happened that the old man, Professor Elvin Gadd, who lived near the house, was researching his favorite subject, ghosts. Luigi told Professor E. Gadd that his brother Mario was missing, so the Professor decided to give Luigi two inventions that would help him search for his brother. Luigi's not exactly known for his bravery. Can he get rid of all the prank- loving ghosts and find Mario? ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Control Stick: Move Luigi, move cursor in menu screens Start: Pause game A: Talk to people, check out items, open doors, confirm selection on menu screens B: Turn off flashlight (hold to keep it off), cancel selection on menu screens C Stick: Change the direction that Luigi shines the flashlight or uses the vacuum in R: Suck up things using the vacuum L: Expel current element from vacuum to attack enemies X: Pull out GameBoy Horror, use to find/check out ghosts Y: View map of mansion Z: View item list ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Capturing Ghosts ---------------- The main aspect of this game is to capture the ghosts within the mansion. It is a rather simple, yet complicated method for beginners, in order to capture them. When a ghost appears, shine the flashlight at it to temporarily stun it. At that point, its heart will become visible, along with its HP count. Now, quickly press and hold R to start sucking it in, depleting its HP as well. Use the C Stick to change the direction Luigi is facing while moving around, to successfully capture the ghost. Pull back on the Control Stick while using the vacuum to keep pulling it in. Use in conjunction with the C Stick to capture ghosts! Boos and the Boo Radar ---------------------- In Area 2 of this game, you'll end up freeing 50 Boos and they'll scatter to different rooms of the mansion. Your goal (although not essential to beating the game) is to find and capture all 50 of them again. Anyway, Boos inhabit rooms that are already lit up (cleared of other ghosts). You'll also be given use of a Boo Radar, which is a light above the GameBoy Horror screen while playing. If you're in a room with no Boo, the light is blue. If there's a Boo, it's yellow. The light will flash quicker when you're close to its location, then turn red when you're right on it. At that point, check out the object in question and a Boo may pop out (keep in mind that the radar detects all round objects and a bomb or Boo ball will come out instead of the actual ghost). Quickly suck it in and make the capture. If you're not quick enough, it'll escape the room and be waiting elsewhere for a short period of time. Check any and every room for Boos later on if you're looking for a high rank at the end! Elements -------- As you may notice, there are certain ghosts that do not have actual hearts. Those ghosts cannot be sucked in the conventional method using the vacuum. You must use an elemental attack to cause damage and eventually defeat it. The color of the ghost's insides determines what elemental ability it possesses (fire, water, or ice). After you collect the appropriate Element Medal, you can suck in that type of element to gain its ability. Say you have the Fire Element Medal; go to a fire and suck it in to make a fiery ghost come out. Suck that in to gain its fire element ability. A meter will then appear at the bottom of the screen showing how much of the element you have left to use. The more you use it, the more the meter is depleted. When you run out, you'll have to find and suck in the elemental ghost like described above if you want to continue using it. Scoring ------- Throughout the course of the game, you will obviously come across coins, paper money, and other items. They are usually hidden just about anywhere; use your vacuum or press A to check out that area to reveal them. You can then suck them in to add them to your overall score. After you beat the area boss, all the stuff you've collected will be added up and you'll be given a total according to what you had. As far as I know, it's not important to collect those items and obtain a high score, so that won't really be emphasized in the walkthrough below. But if you want to go for a high score, explore everywhere and find all you can! Here's a quick list of how much each treasure is worth: Gold Coin: 5000 G Paper Bill: 20,000 G Gold Bar: 100,000 G Blue Ruby: 500,000 G Green Ruby: 800,000 G Red Ruby: 1,000,000 G Silver Emerald: 2,000,000 G Pink Emerald: 5,000 G Gold Emerald: 20,000,000 G Big Pearl: 1,000,000 G Medium Pearl: 100,000 G Small Pearl: 50,000 G Ranking ------- After you complete the game, you will be given a ranking from A to H. That ranking is based upon how much treasure you've accumulated throughout the course of the game. It may also have to do with how fast you completed the game, and how many Portrait Ghosts and Boos you captured, but I'm not totally sure of that. Anyway, you'll have to search EVERYWHERE and get EVERYTHING in order to have the nicest mansion at the end of the game. That includes finding both secret treasure rooms, catching all the golden mice, etc. Here's a quick list of the requirements for obtaining each rank: Rank A: Finish game with over 100,000,000 G Rank B: Finish game with 70,000,001-100,000,000 G Rank C: Finish game with 60,000,001-70,000,000 G Rank D: Finish game with 50,000,001-60,000,000 G Rank E: Finish game with 40,000,001-50,000,000 G Rank F: Finish game with 20,000,001-40,000,000 G Rank G: Finish game with 5,000,001-20,000,000 G Rank H: Finish game with under 5,000,000 G ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 6. Walkthrough -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ============ Introduction ============ This game opens with Luigi wandering throughout the gloomy forest. He reaches the mansion and proceeds to enter it. Inside, get accustomed to moving around, then head upstairs and try to open the large door straight ahead. You'll then hear a ghost giggling, so head back downstairs to see a ghost drop a Key nearby. Pick up the Key and go upstairs to the door you couldn't open before, and you'll unlock it and enter that room. There, you'll encounter a ghost for the first time, only to be saved by a wacky professor known as Professor E. Gadd. You'll then be taken to his laboratory where you'll be safe for now. ============= E. Gadd's Lab ============= Here, you'll hear about Luigi winning that mansion he never entered the contest for, and that another man with a red hat came by earlier, but never returned! After that, you'll be able to set your controls and enter the training room. Here, you will receive the Poltergust 3000 vacuum that you'll be using for the entire game. You'll then enter some training to get used to using the vacuum and flashlight to capture ghosts. After the training, you'll be asked if you want to visit the Gallery (you don't have to, so just say no). Then, choose to go back to the Mansion. ======= Mansion ======= Foyer (1F) ---------- When you enter this main room of the mansion, go and talk to Toad, who's standing nearby. Hear his story and choose to help him, then save your game (talk to Toad in the future to save, too). Then, head upstairs and collect the coins on the floor and dressers, then enter the middle room, which is the Parlor. Parlor (2F) ----------- In this room, use the vacuum and collect the hidden coins in the cabinets. Blow out the candles on the counter in the middle of the room, and the paintings will come to life and ghosts will attack one at a time. Defeat the ghosts to turn on the light and make a chest appear. Open it to get a Key. Then, open the northeast door and enter the next room. Anteroom (2F) ------------- Here, defeat some more ghosts as they appear, then empty the cabinets of the money inside. Then, continue west into the Wardrobe Room. Wardrobe Room (2F) ------------------ In this room, defeat the ghosts that are already in the room. Open the cabinets, particularly the ones in both corners, to expose more ghosts. Beat them to light the room, then you'll notice a Key has appeared on a high ledge. Aim the vacuum high and suck it in to retrieve the Key. Now, go west and through the door onto the balcony. Balcony (2F) ------------ Here, talk to Toad to light up this area, then save your game if you like. Then, go back a few rooms to the Foyer (the first room of the mansion). Foyer (2F) ---------- When you get back here, go west and towards the door. You'll be contacted by E. Gadd with some useful information for the next areas of the game. After that, unlock the door and enter a hallway. Hallway (2F) ------------ There, follow the coin path to collect some cash, then enter the first door to the right to reach the Study. Study (2F) ---------- In this room, you'll notice a Portrait Ghost (a ghost that disappears when you look at it; use the GameBoy Horror to get a hint on capturing it) is sitting in the rocking chair nearby. Avoid the books being thrown at you mysteriously by the bookcase, then get next to the rocking chair with your back towards it. When the ghost appears, wait until the ghost stops to yawn. At that point, quickly turn around and shine the light on it, then use the vacuum to suck it in, capturing Neville. Open the chest that appears to get a Key, then exit this room. Hallway (2F) ------------ Back in the hallway, go west to the end, then unlock the door and enter that room. Master Bedroom (2F) ------------------- Here, you'll find another Portrait Ghost. Check the cabinets to get coins, bills, and even a gold bar. Then, go to the right window and use the vacuum to pull the curtain back. When the ghost stops and notices the breeze, shine the light and use the vacuum to capture Lydia. Now, open the chest to get a Key, then exit this room. Hallway (2F) ------------ In the halls again, you'll notice a baby crying from inside a room nearby. Go east and enter the first door to the south, using your Key. Nursery (2F) ------------ Here, you'll notice another Portrait Ghost of a baby in the crib, known as Chauncey. Search it via the GameBoy Horror to get information on what you have to do. Then, use the vacuum on the rocking horse nearby to get it rocking. Keep doing that until the baby comes out and wants to play with you. It'll want to fight, so suck in the ball nearby with your vacuum, then shoot it at the baby. That will only make the baby mad, and you'll be shrunk down quite a bit. You'll then fight the now-giant baby as a boss, so read the Bosses section for help on winning! After the battle, open the large chest in this lit room to get the Key! You will then be contacted by E. Gadd again and brought back to the Lab. ============= E. Gadd's Lab ============= Back here again, you'll witness the process of turning captured ghosts back into paintings. After that, your score will be added up and you can save your game, which I recommend. Then, choose to go back to the Mansion. ======= Mansion ======= Foyer (1F) ---------- Back inside the mansion, go straight ahead and the door that's covered with thorns will clear up, allowing you to access it. Unlock the door with the Key you got for defeating Chauncey, then enter that room. Hallway (1F) ------------ Here, head east until you reach the intersection, then follow the hallway north to the end. Go west and north towards the thorn-covered door, then enter the second door to the west, which is the Bathroom. Bathroom (1F) ------------- In this room, defeat the 2 white ghosts that try to grab you; keep your distance to avoid being grabbed. If you are caught by one, move the Control Stick back and forth quickly to break free. After you beat them, the lights will turn on and E. Gadd will contact you regarding those ghosts you just fought. Use the vacuum to pull down the Key on the high shelf, then exit here. Hallway (1F) ------------ Now, head back south and east, then south again while defeating the ghosts along the way. Unlock the door to the east with the Key you just found, and enter the Ball Room. Ball Room (1F) -------------- Inside this room, you'll encounter some masked ghosts dancing together. You must first pull of the masks using the vacuum, then shine the light and suck in the unmasked ghost. Use that method to clear all 6 of the masked ghosts. After you do that, a couple of Portrait Ghosts will appear and start dancing around invisibly. You must be close in order to see them (you'll know where they are by the location of the yellowish dust). Get close, then vacuum them in to capture the Dancing Couple. When the lights come on, open the chest to get a Key, then enter the northeast room. Storage Room (1F) ----------------- In this room, defeat the various ghosts that appear. When the light turns on, walk directly south from the mirror to the south wall. Use the GameBoy Horror to find the switch on the south wall you can't see, then press it to move the west wall, revealing the other half of the room. There, you'll find a poster on the north wall. Pull it off with the vacuum to reveal another switch; push it and the floor will open up, releasing LOTS of Boos! After doing that, E. Gadd will call and tell you to come by the lab. ============= E. Gadd's Lab ============= Here, you'll be briefed on finding the Boos, as well as using the GameBoy Horror to find where they're hiding. After you're done here, go back to the mansion. ======= Mansion ======= Foyer (1F) ---------- At this point, you must go on a hunt for some of those Boos that escaped in order to progress in the game. Start off by going upstairs and entering all the rooms you can get into on the 2F (Parlor, Anteroom, Wardrobe Room, Study, Master Bedroom, and Nursery). Each of those rooms contains a Boo, so check out the area when the Boo Radar turns red. When the Boo appears, quickly face it and start sucking it in to capture. After you collect 5, E. Gadd will contact you again and suggest that you go down to the Washroom. Collect all 6 Boos that're in the aforementioned rooms, then get back to the 1F Foyer. There, save your game with Toad and enter the Hallway to the north. Hallway (1F) ------------ Here, follow the hall east, north, and west as if you're heading to the Bathroom from before. This time, enter the first door to the left (the one before the Bathroom). Washroom (1F) ------------- In this room, talk to the Toad crying in the corner. Then, check out the toilet to get a Key. Now, exit this room. Hallway (1F) ------------ Back out here, go east and south all the way through the halls. At the end, go east and unlock the door to the south to enter the Fortune-teller's Room. Fortune-teller's Room (1F) -------------------------- Here, talk to the fortune teller known as Madame Clairvoya, and she'll tell you to bring her someone's lost items to see the future. After that, go east and through the door into the next room. Mirror Room (1F) ---------------- In this room with a mirror spanning the entire north wall, use the mirror's reflection to find and defeat the ghosts that seem to be invisible to you. After you kill them all, open the chest to get the Fire Element Medal. E. Gadd will contact you again, telling you how to use it. Approach the flame torch to the east and vacuum up the fire enemy to get the Fire element. Now, shoot flames at the 2 colored candle stands in both corners of the room to light them and open the west door. Then, go back west to the previous room. Fortune-teller's Room (1F) -------------------------- Here again, light all 4 candle stands (one in each corner) to make a Key appear. Vacuum up the Key from the high ledge it sits upon, then go north and out to the hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Here, head all the way west to the very end, then unlock the door and enter the following room. Laundry Room (1F) ----------------- In this rather tough room, defeat the ghosts that appear and try to grab you. Then, open the chest that appears to get LOTS of money! Next, check out the washing machine to get Mario's Hat! Now, leave this room and head back down the hall to the Fortune-teller's Room. Fortune-teller's Room (1F) -------------------------- Back here, shine the flashlight on the crystal ball until Madama Clairvoya appears. Talk to her and she'll give you a little bit of information regarding Mario. After she's done, exit this room. Hallway (1F) ------------ Now, head west and north to the end of the hall. You'll see an invisible being carrying an unlit candle back and forth through the halls here. Shoot fire to light the candles up, and the butler will materialize and run away. Follow him through the halls into the Laundry Room, then south to the Butler's Room. Butler's Room (1F) ------------------ In this room, the butler will finally stop and sit down. Suck in the smaller ghosts wandering around, then flash and suck in the butler to capture it. Open the chest that appears to get a Key. Before you continue, use the GameBoy Horror and look towards the northeast corner of the room; you'll find a small mousehole in the wall. Search it to activate it, then walk into the swirling wind to get sucked into the Hidden Room. Hidden Room (1F) ---------------- In this flashy, treasure-filled room, open all the chests you find. Defeat the ice-based ghosts that pop out of some chests by using the fire element, provided you still have it. After all ghosts are beaten, open the chest that appears for even more treasure. When you're done, check the west wall and search the mousehole to activate it again, then warp back to the Butler's Room. Butler's Room (1F) ------------------ From here, just exit this room and continue through the Laundry Room to reach the Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Back here, go east and north and west at the end. Unlock the door to the north you pass by and enter the Conservatory. Conservatory (1F) ----------------- Here, you'll find a room full of musical instruments to play. Check out each one, and they'll play the Super Mario Brothers theme (how fitting that is)! After you get all the instruments besides the piano going, a ghost by the name of Melody will appear at the piano. She'll play a piece, then ask you a question regarding it. Choose the correct answer, and she'll send musical sheets to attack you. Suck them in, then shine the light on Melody and proceed to capture her as well. After that, open the chest to get a Key, then exit this room. Hallway (1F) ------------ Now, head east and south through the halls, then unlock the door to the west and enter the Dining Room. Dining Room (1F) ---------------- In this room, start by sucking in a fire enemy from the torch in the corner to get the fire element. Then, shoot fire to light the candles on the table in the center of the room; you'll then make the large ghost eating there visible. Now, stand in front of the table and start sucking in the ghost's food with the vacuum. When the blue ghosts come to bring more food, quickly flash and suck them in to eliminate that problem. Then, continue sucking in food until there's none left. After that, the large ghost will start attacking by shooting fireballs at you. Avoid those, then when he stops for a bit, flash the light and start sucking him in. When you capture him (Mr. Luggs), open the chest that appears to get LOTS of treasure, including a gem! Then, head west to the next room. Kitchen (1F) ------------ In this room, suck in the clattering kitchenware when they start flying towards you. Then, open the refrigerator and a watery ghost will pop out to attack. Since this one has a watery heart, you cannot vacuum it in; instead, shoot fire at it to cause damage and defeat it. After you do that, open the chest to get the Water Element Medal. E. Gadd will then brief you on its usage as usual. Now, notice the water pouring out of the faucet by the sink; suck in the water to make a watery ghost appear. Suck that ghost in to get the Water Element. Use it to put out the fire at the west end of the room, then head outside to the Boneyard. Boneyard (1F) ------------- Here, you'll notice a Portrait Ghost of a dog by the dog house. Use the water faucet to the east to get the water element, then go by the house and fill the bowl with water. When the ghostly skeleton emerges from the dirt pile nearby, shine the light on it and suck it in with your vacuum while avoiding the dog following you around. After you beat that skeleton, a bone will be dropped in the middle of this area. When the dog goes to check it out, shine the light and suck it in, capturing Spooky the dog! Now, use the GameBoy Horror and search the inside of the dog house. Walk near it afterwards and you'll be sucked in, then dropped in the Graveyard at the other side of the wall. Graveyard (1F) -------------- In this area, check out the tombstones to get some hearts if you need them. When 3 skeleton ghosts come out, defeat them one at a time. After you beat them all, your attention will be drawn to the glowing headstone. Go and check it out to reveal the boss ghost of this area. You'll then be brought to the boss arena and battle will commence. Read the Bosses section for help on defeating this ghostly boss known as Bogmire. After you win and return to the graveyard, open the chest and take the Key. When E. Gadd contacts you again, you'll be brought back to the lab. ============= E. Gadd's Lab ============= Back here, E. Gadd will turn the Portrait Ghosts you've captured into actual paintings once again (you should have 9 total at this point). After you get your total score, save your game. Then, head back to the mansion. ======= Mansion ======= Foyer (1F) ---------- Back inside the mansion, head straight ahead and through the door to the hallway area. Hallway (1F) ------------ Here, go east and north through the hall, then west and north to the very end. Then, approach the north door and the thorns will disappear. Use the Key you got from the battle with Bogmire and enter the Courtyard. Courtyard (1F) -------------- Out here, head east and suck in the ghosts you pass along the way. When you reach a birdhouse, use the vacuum and suck at it to pull a letter out, then pick it up to get Mario's Letter! Then, check out the shack nearby and you'll find a Toad crying inside (the door will swing open and you'll get hurt a little though). He'll tell you of something bad in the well, so go west and climb into the well. Bottom of the Well (BF) ----------------------- Here, go east as far as you can go. Luigi will stick his head into the next room where he'll find Mario's being held captive! After that, go back to the ladder and suck in the white ghost hanging there. Take the Key it leaves behind, then climb back out of here. Courtyard (1F) -------------- Now, head back east to the Toad in the shack. Talk to him and he'll reveal more information about 5 items dropped by Mario. Tell the Toad that you'll find them all, then save your game. After that, go east to the door and unlock it, then enter the Rec Room. Rec Room (1F) ------------- Here, you'll find another Portrait Ghost lifting weights. You'll notice 3 punching bags surrounding him as well. Punch one and it'll hit him, but move out of the way or it'll hit you on the way back! Do that twice and he'll start chasing you with a flurry of punches. Lure him towards the punching bags, then hit him with one again to knock him out on the floor. Now, suck him in to capture him (Biff Atlas). Open the chest that appears to get even more treasure! Then, get on the treadmill against the west wall and run on it until a Key pops out. Take it, then go through the south door into the Hallway. Staircase (1F) -------------- Here, just unlock the west door leading to the Hallway with your Key; that way you won't have to go all the way through the Courtyard again to arrive in this room. Then, go east and up the stairs to a door blocked by fire. Shoot water at it to put out the flames (if you don't have the Water element with you, go get it in the Courtyard fountain and come back here). Then, go through the north door into the Tea Room. Tea Room (2F) ------------- Here, suck in the golden ghost mouse that runs by to get a jackpot of treasure to appear! Then, defeat the 2 ghosts to make a chest appear on the table. To reach it, you must make use of the reverse-gravity pads on the floor and ceiling. Step on the pad in the east corner to get sent up to the ceiling, then walk to the one west of the chandelier to be dropped to the floor again. You'll land on the table; open the chest and take the Ice Element Medal. E. Gadd will then contact you as usual with information regarding it. After that, vacuum the misty bucket on the other table, then suck in the icy ghost that comes out to get the Ice Element. Now, exit this room. Staircase (2F) -------------- Back here, go west and through that door into the Hallway. Hallway (2F) ------------ Here, head all the way west and north through the hall to the very end. Then, go through the northmost door to the west and enter the Bathroom. Bathroom (2F) ------------- In this room, you'll see someone behind the curtain taking a shower, or so it seems. Pull back the curtain with your vacuum, then shoot the ghost with the Ice Element until you expose its heart. Then, proceed to shine the light and suck it in until you capture Miss Petunia. Open the chest that appears to get a Key for the room downstairs. Now, exit this room. Hallway (2F) ------------ Back here, head all the way east through the hall and continue through the door at the end to reach the Staircase. Staircase (2F) -------------- Here, go east and down the stairs, then through the west door into yet another Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Head all the way west down the hall here until you pass a door to the south. Unlock it and enter the Billiards Room. Billiards Room (1F) ------------------- In this room, you'll find a Portrait Ghost moving around a pool table, then shooting pool balls off the table. Suck one in with your vacuum, then shoot it out at the ghost to get his attention. Do that 3 times and he'll become visible and vulnerable. Shine the light and suck him in to capture him (Slim Bankshot). Open the chest that appears and a LOT of treasure will come out. Collect it all, then go east into the Projection Room. Projection Room (1F) -------------------- In this room, check out the projector and it'll turn on, lighting up the wall. Several ghosts will then appear, one at a time; however, they're TOTALLY invisible this time around! You'll have to rely on the shadows to find the ghosts. Shine and suck in all the ghosts to turn the room light on and make a chest appear. Open the chest to get Mario's Glove. Now, exit this room and the Billiards Room as well to reach the Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Back here, head east and south through the halls, then go east and through the door to the south to enter the Fortune-teller's Room. Fortune-teller's Room (1F) -------------------------- Here, shine the light on the crystal ball until Madame Clairvoya appears. Talk to her twice, showing her the 2 new items you found that belong to Mario. She'll give you some more information about his whereabouts. After she's done, enter the room to the east and get the Fire Element. Exit that room and continue north to the Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Now, head north all the way down the hall to the end. Then, go east and through the door to the Staircase. Staircase (1F) -------------- Go up the stairs here to the 2F, then go through the west door to the Hallway. Hallway (2F) ------------ Here, go west to the point where the hall goes south. Take it south and enter the first door to the right to enter the Astral Hall. Astral Hall (2F) ---------------- In this room, light up all the candles surrounding the middle area with your fire ability. Then, step into the middle of the room and ghosts will appear. Defeat them all, then go east into the Observatory. Observatory (2F) ---------------- Check out the telescope in this room and you'll notice something by the moon. When you return to the room, it'll look a bit different. Go east to the new ledge and suck in a falling star with your vacuum, then shoot it out at the moon. It'll explode, and a bright path leading to the remaining half of the moon will appear. Follow that path to the end, then take Mario's Star! Now, go back and exit this room, and continue out of the Astral Hall as well. Hallway (2F) ------------ Back in the hall, go north and west to the end, then enter the door to the east to reach Nana's Room. Nana's Room (2F) ---------------- In this room, you'll notice a Portrait Ghost of an old woman is sitting in the rocking chair. Check out the 3 balls of yarn on the table next to her, and you'll knock them down. Suck one in and shoot it out at her while avoiding her movements and attacks. Shoot her 3 times, once with each ball, and her heart will be revealed. Then, shine the light and suck her in for the capture of Nana. Open the chest that appears to get a Key, then exit this room. Hallway (2F) ------------ Now, head south and all the way east and through the door to the Staircase. Staircase (2F) -------------- Head down the stairs here and continue west to the Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Now, make your way west and south, then west and through the large door to the Foyer. Foyer (1F) ---------- Here, go up the stairs and head west through the door to the Hallway. Hallway (2F) ------------ In this area, go west until you pass the first door to the south. Unlock that door and enter the Twins' Room. The Twins' Room (2F) -------------------- In this room, you'll notice 2 airplanes on the ceiling near the bed to the east. Use your vacuum and spin them around several times. After that, the Twins will appear and talk to you. Choose to play hide and seek with them, then leave the room and come back in. You'll see 4 boxes in the room this time, and the Twins are hiding in 2 of them, leaving you to guess which ones. A quick way to find out which boxes they're hiding in is to vacuum each box. If it moves slightly, someone's inside, so open that box. When you find both of them, they'll get into a car and a plane and move around the room attacking you. Pull each one from their vehicles with your vacuum, then proceed to suck them in, one at a time. After you finish capturing the Twins, open the chest to get Mario's Shoe! Then, exit this room and make your way back downstairs and into the Fortune-teller's Room (you should be able to find your way there by now). Fortune-teller's Room (1F) -------------------------- Here, get Madame Clairvoya to appear by shining light on the crystal ball. Talk to her several times, each time with a different item of Mario's. After you get all of her information, she'll ask you take her and turn her back into a painting. So, shine the light and capture her, then open the chest that appears to get a Key. Now, exit this room. Hallway (1F) ------------ Here, head north all the way through the hall, then east to the Staircase. Staircase (1F) -------------- In here, simply go upstairs and through the west door to the Hallway. Hallway (2F) ------------ Follow the hall west and south, then all the way east. Go up the stairs to the 3F, then unlock the south door and enter the Safari Room. Safari Room (3F) ---------------- Here in this dark room, use the vacuum to shake around the deer heads on the north wall. When the water-based ghost appears, use ice to defeat it (if you don't have that element, you can find it via the bucket in the Tea Room). Continue to defeat the regular ghosts, as well as the water-based ones, until the room lights up and a chest appears. Open the chest to get a Key, then go west into the Hallway. Hallway (3F) ------------ Here, go all the way north to the end, then unlock the door and you'll reach the Balcony (note that you'll need to have captured 20 Boos in order to proceed, so if you haven't already done so, go back and collect some more first). Balcony (3F) ------------ Out here, you'll notice a circle of Boos to the west. Approach the circle and they'll be taunting you, then they'll surround you and transform into their real form, which is a giant Boo! You'll then enter battle, so read the Bosses section for help on beating this boss, called Boolossus. After you win, you'll notice that 15 Boos were added to your total count, so the ones you fought in that battle count towards the 50! Now, open the chest nearby and take the Key inside. E. Gadd will contact you, then you'll head over to the lab. ============= E. Gadd's Lab ============= Here, you'll turn the Portrait Ghosts you've captured into paintings again. You'll then get your score and the option to save, so save now. After that, head back to the mansion as usual. ======= Mansion ======= Foyer (1F) ---------- Back here again, go through the door straight ahead into the Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Head east and north all the way through the hall, then east and through the door leading to the Staircase. Staircase (1F) -------------- As usual here, go up the stairs and through the west door to the Hallway. Hallway (2F) ------------ Here, go west and south, then all the way east and up the stairs. Then, go through the south door into the Safari Room. Safari Room (3F) ---------------- In this room, just continue through the west door into the Hallway. Hallway (3F) ------------ Here, go all the way north to the end, then enter the door to reach the Balcony. Balcony (3F) ------------ Up here, go all the way west through this area. When you come to the thorn- covered door, it'll clear up since you have the Key. After that happens, lightning will strike the mansion, shutting off all the lights! That means all the ghosts will return to all rooms of the darkened mansion! E. Gadd will then contact you as well. After that, go all the way east again while defeating the ghosts along the way. Then, go back into the Hallway. Hallway (3F) ------------ From here, go all the way south and enter the last door to the right to reach the Safari Room. Safari Room (3F) ---------------- Here, just continue north and through the door to the Staircase. Staircase (3F) -------------- Just go east and down the stairs here to reach the 2F Hallway. Hallway (2F) ------------ Out here, head all the way west and north through the halls. At the end, head east and through the door to the Staircase, then go downstairs to the 1F hall. Hallway (1F) ------------ Here, head west and all the way south to the end of the hallway. Then, go west and through the large door to the south to reach the Foyer. Foyer (1F) ---------- In this room, go up the stairs and through the north door to the Parlor. From there, make your way through the next 2 rooms to reach the Wardrobe Room. Wardrobe Room (2F) ------------------ In this room, you'll notice a Portrait Ghost standing in front of the mirror. Keep your back to him until he reveals his heart for a few moments. At that point, turn around and shine the light on him, then proceed to capture him. After you catch him (Uncle Grimmly), open the chest that appears to get a Key. Now, go back through the previous few rooms to the Foyer again. Foyer (2F) ---------- Back here, go downstairs and through the north door to the 1F Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ In this area, go all the way east and through the door to another Staircase. Staircase (1F) -------------- Here, head downstairs to the BF, then unlock the north door and enter the next room. Breaker Room (BF) ----------------- In this room, vacuum up the ghost mice if you want, then check out the generator against the north wall. Pull the switch to turn on the power again in the mansion. Now, open the chest that appeared to get a Key, then exit the room and unlock the south door in the hall, and enter the Cellar. Cellar (BF) ----------- Here, go east and check out the barrel to reveal a ghost. Defeat it like you normally would, then you'll notice several dirt piles in your way. Vacuum up the 2 piles immediately to your south, then follow the path to several more piles. Vacuum all those up so you can reach the other barrel. Check out the barrel and defeat the second ghost to turn the lights on here again. Open the chest that appears to get a Key for a room in the 3F. Now, go back through the north door to exit this room. Now, make your way all the way upstairs to the 3F Balcony (where you fought Boolossus; it's pointless for me to give you directions walking through the halls just to get there, so follow the map if you need help). Balcony (3F) ------------ When you finally make your way here, go all the way west to the other door that was covered with thorns earlier. Unlock the door with the special Key you got from beating Boolossus, and enter the Hallway. Hallway (3F) ------------ Here, go all the way to the end of the hallway, then enter the last door to the east to reach the Telephone Room. Telephone Room (3F) ------------------- In this room, open all the large chests throughout the room. Some will shoot out treasure, and skeleton ghosts will pop out of 2 of them. Defeat those ghosts to turn on the room light, then open the chest to get lots more treasure! Now, unlock the north door and enter the Clockwork Room. Clockwork Room (3F) ------------------- Here, you'll find 3 ghostly toy soldiers standing next to each other in the room. There are also 3 clocks in this room; one in the upper-right corner, one in the upper-left corner, and one in the left side of the room. Check out each clock to make them all play music. If you get them all on at once, the 3 toy soldiers will come to life and attack. One at a time, use the vacuum to pull off the spinning handles on one's back, then continue to suck the soldier in. Avoid getting hit by the other soldiers when sucking in one, though. Repeat this until you have all 3 Clockwork Soldiers captured. After that, the door in the middle of the room will open, so enter the toy house and go up the elevator to reach the roof. Roof ---- Here, suck off the masks of the ghosts wandering around, then flash them with the light and suck them in. When the ice-based ghosts start to show up, use the vacuum on the fire to make the fire ghost come out; suck it in to get the Fire Element. Use that to defeat the icy ghosts. After you beat them all, a chest will appear. Go west and climb up the ladder against the left chimmney, then open the chest to get a Key. Climb back down and go back down the elevator to the Clockwork Room. Clockwork Room (3F) ------------------- Back here, go southeast and through the door to the Telephone Room, then continue west through there to reach the Hallway. Hallway (3F) ------------ Here, unlock the door directly across the hall and enter the Armory. Armory (3F) ----------- In this room, you'll notice several sets of armor set up around the room. Check out each one while standing to the side; that way you avoid the falling spiked ball it drops when you check it out. Defeat the ghosts that pop out of some armors, then check out the chests to reveal more ghosts. Beat them to turn on the lights, then open the chest that appears to get a Key. Now, go through the door to the north to reach the Ceramics Studio. Ceramics Studio (3F) -------------------- Here, start by getting the Ice Element from the frozen jar. Then, head to the middle of the room and a ghost will emerge from another jar. Accept its challenge, then the contest will begin. The ghost will appear in any of the 7 jars in the circle, and you must be quick to use the icy ability to freeze it each time. Do that 7 times to win. After that, you'll have the opportunity to capture the ghost, so shine the light and start sucking it in. Avoid the jars flying through the room, and capture Jarvis. Open the chest that appears to get LOADS of treasure! Then, go back a couple rooms to the Hallway again. Hallway (3F) ------------ Back here, head across the hall and enter the Telephone Room. From there, continue through here and the Clockwork Room until you reach the Roof again. Roof ---- Here, head east and climb up the right chimmney, then drop down into the Sealed Room. Sealed Room (2F) ---------------- In this other hidden room, open all the treasure chests you find to reveal LOTS of hidden treasure, as well as some ghosts. Defeat all of the ghosts, then when the rooms lights up, open the chest that appears to get a Key. Now, use the vacuum and pull the cover off the north wall in the northeast corner of the room. Doing so will reveal a mirror. Search it with the GameBoy Horror to be warped back to the 1F Foyer. Foyer (1F) ---------- When you get back here, go straight through the door and into the Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ Here, go east and all the way north to the end. Then, go east and through the door to the Staircase. Staircase (1F) -------------- Simply go up the stairs here to the 2F, then go through the west door to reach the Hallway again. Hallway (2F) ------------ Now, go west and south through the hall to the very end. Then, unlock the door to the south with your Key and enter the Sitting Room. Sitting Room (2F) ----------------- In this room, get the fire element from the candle on the middle table. Then, light the 2 candles on the north wall, and ghosts will start to appear. Defeat all the normal ones, then get the water element in the southwest corner of the room and use it to defeat the fire-based ghosts. After you beat them all, the room will light up. Now, go through the east door into the Guest Room. Guest Room (2F) --------------- In this upside-down room, you'll notice a Portrait Ghost of a little girl sleeping on the bed. She'll warn you not to try waking her up. Use the water element (if you don't have it, get it from the previous room) and shoot it at her to get her to wake up. Do that 3 times and she'll wake up and reveal her heart; then is your chance to start sucking her in. Avoid the toy clowns that fly towards you, and continue capturing this girl. After you capture her (Sue Pea), a chest will appear on the ceiling. Exit the room and you'll hear some rumbling, so reenter the Guest Room to see it flipped upright again. Open the chest and collect all its treasure, then use the mirror to warp back to the Foyer. Foyer (1F) ---------- Back here, go through the doors straight ahead into the Hallway. Hallway (1F) ------------ From here, go all the way east and through the door to reach the Staircase. Staircase (1F) -------------- Here, go down the stairs into the BF, then go through the south door to reach the Cellar. Cellar (BF) ----------- In this room, make your way around to the other side of the room, vacuuming up the dirt piles in your way. Then, go through the west door to the Hallway. Hallway (BF) ------------ Here, go north to the end of the hall. There, unlock the west door and enter the Pipe Room. Pipe Room (BF) -------------- In this room, shine the light on and suck in the ghosts that try to grab you. Then, get the Ice Element if you don't have it already, and shoot the ice at the toxic water. When it freezes, walk across the frozen water and Luigi will turn the valve to shut off the nearby waterfall. Now, walk east to a chest you wouldn't be able to reach otherwise and get a Key. Then, go back around and across the frozen water, and exit this room. Hallway (BF) ------------ Now, go south and unlock the door to the west. Then, enter the Cold Storage. Cold Storage (BF) ----------------- Here in this extremely cold room, you'll see a frozen Portrait Ghost in the northwest corner of the room. Get the Fire Element from the small fire nearby, then light the 2 fireplaces next to the Portrait Ghost. Doing so will revive it, and it'll attack you. Avoid the wave of icicles it sends at you, as well as the icicles on the ceiling, then shoot fire at the frozen ghost. When it thaws for a moment, start sucking it up. If it escapes your grasp, repeat that process until you capture it (Sir Weston). Open the chest that appears to get a Key, then exit this room. Now, make your way through the previous rooms of the basement floor, and get up to the 1F. From there, continue through the halls all the way to the 3F. Once there, go through the Safari Room and reach the Hallway after that. Hallway (3F) ------------ When you get here, go north and unlock the door to the east. Then, enter the next room. The Artist's Studio (3F) ------------------------ When you enter this room, you'll notice a bunch of paintings and a ghost artist. He'll send his many paintings set up around the room to attack, one at a time. From each painting, 3 ghosts will emerge for you to fight. Defeat them and the next painting's ghosts will come out. Fight and suck them all in until you clear the room, then you'll be able to try and capture the artist. After you capture him (Vincent Van Gore), take the Key that comes out of the final painting, then leave this room. Now, head all the way back downstairs to the BF. Then, get to the Hallway down there. Hallway (BF) ------------ When you get to the hallway, go all the way north to the door at the end. Then, go through the door and continue down the hall. Keep going until you reach the thorn-covered door at the very end. Approach it and the thorns will disappear; unlock it with the Key you got from the paintings upstairs, and enter the Secret Altar (if you don't have 40 Boos captured at this point, you won't be able to proceed, so now's a good time to go and find some more before continuing). Secret Altar (BF) ----------------- Here, go straight ahead and you'll find Mario trapped in the painting, and King Boo staring at it. Go towards them and King Boo will speak for a moment, then warp the room so the Mario painting becomes one of Bowser. It'll then vanish into the painting and suck you into the arena atop the mansion. You'll then enter battle against Bowser, so read the Bosses section for help here! After you win, congratulations on completing this game! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 7. Bosses -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Chauncey Found: Nursery (2F) HP: 100 Strategy: This is the first boss battle you'll face in this game, and it's also the easiest. The baby starts off by rattling his rattle, while rocking horses move across the background. When you cross in front of the rocking horse, it'll be shot straight ahead towards your area, so get out of the way! After a couple rounds of that, several balls will bounce around. When one stops, suck it in and spit it out at the baby to reveal its heart. Now's your chance to use the vacuum and start depleting its HP! After a while, it'll break out of the suction. The baby will then move around your area, bouncing on the ground, but you can avoid that easily. The battle pattern from before will continue once again, so continue the above strategy until you win here! Bogmire Found: Graveyard (1F) HP: 100 Strategy: The second boss battle of the game is obviously a bit harder than the first one. There are several ghosts here with black shadows underneath them, and then there's a purplish-colored one with no shadow. That one is the actual boss ghost you must attack. Use the vacuum and suck in the shadow of another ghost, then shoot that shadow ball at the boss. The darkness will prevent it from moving for several moments, so move in and start sucking it in with your vacuum. You most likely won't get it all in one shot, since you'll bump into the other ghosts as you suck in the boss. If the boss does get free, continue the same method as above and you'll eventually beat it! Boolossus Found: Balcony (3F) HP: N/A Strategy: Although it may seem scary and difficult, this giant Boo is not much of a problem for you, either. In its main form, it bounces around the area trying to crush you, so get behind it and suck it in with your vacuum. While holding onto it, walk into one of the pointed ice statues to pop the Boo, turning it back into 15 small Boos. Get the Ice Element from one of those statues, then start freezing the Boos one at a time, then sucking them when frozen with your vacuum. After a while they'll group together and become the giant Boo again, so repeat the same process once again. Keep in mind that the more small Boos you eliminate, the quicker the remaining ones, as well as the big one, get, so be careful! Keep repeating the same battle plan as above until you win this fight. King Boo/Bowser Found: Secret Altar (BF) HP: 500 Strategy: This is the final battle of the entire game, and it's a rather fitting one as well. Bowser will move around the area and shoot fire at you, or try sucking you into his mouth and spitting you out to cause lots of damage. He'll also throw 3 spiked balls at you. Try to vacuum one by walking towards it and holding R, then when you have it, wait until Bowser turns to face you. He'll get ready to attack, so when he bends down just before he shoots fire or sucks you in, shoot the spiked ball at him. His head will pop off and float around shooting ice at you, while King Boo will come and just float around. Now's your chance to start sucking away King Boo's HP. After a while, King Boo will go back inside Bowser and the battle will continue as before. After you get King Boo down to under 200 HP, when Bowser's head gets put back on, it's put on backwards. Bowser will then run back and forth to try and hit you, then he'll adjust his head so it faces the right way, then the same battle pattern as before will commence. Use this same strategy and you'll beat Bowser and King Boo, thus completing the game! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 8. Items -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Fire Element Medal: With this, approach a fire area and vacuum it to make a fiery ghost appear; suck it in to gain the ability to shoot fire from your vacuum. Ice Element Medal: With this, approach an icy area and vacuum it to make an icy ghost appear; suck it in to gain the ability to shoot an icy mist from your vacuum. Key: Use these to open locked doors throughout the Mansion. Which key opens which door is shown on the map (press Y). Small Mushroom: A funky looking mushroom that temporarily shrinks you down to mini-size. You cannot use your vacuum while small, but it does wear off after several seconds. Water Element Medal: With this, approach an watery area and vacuum it to make a watery ghost appear; suck it in to gain the ability to shoot water from your vacuum. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 9. Golden Mice Locations -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= In the mansion, you most obviously have noticed the ghostly mice wandering around in the halls and certain rooms. There are also golden-colored mice, which appear only in certain areas, and they reward you with a HUGE jackpot if you suck them in! There are 10 golden mice total; 5 are always found in the specified rooms, and the other 5 can appear in the specified rooms, but it's totally random when they actually appear. In the rooms where the mice do not randomly appear, there is a piece of cheese, which you can find using the GameBoy Horror. If you search the cheese, the golden mouse will come out of hiding, so give chase! For all of them, they only show up if the specified room is dark, so keep that in mind as well. Here's a list of where all 10 golden mice are located, and if they appear randomly or not: Non-Random (Cheese Triggered) Mice ---------------------------------- 1. Study 2. Fortune-teller's Room 3. Dining Room 4. Safari Room 5. Tea Room Randomly Appearing Mice ----------------------- 1. Hallway (2x) 2. Tea Room 3. Kitchen 4. Sealed Room ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 10. Secrets/Tips and Tricks -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Access Hidden Mansion --------------------- After you complete the game once, you'll be able to access your saved file again. This time, E. Gadd will give you the option to go to a Hidden Mansion instead of the regular one you just completed. The only differences are that ghosts are tougher, and the items/Keys are located in different rooms. It's still fun to try, though! Avoiding Trap Doors ------------------- As you may know, there are many doors that you can go through in order to access different areas of the mansion. However, some are "traps" and will swing open, crushing you against the wall and making you lose health/coins! To avoid such doors, simply take a look at the map (press Y). Alternatively, you can just aim your vacuum at any door and hold R. If the door shakes, it's a real door; if it doesn't shake, it's fake. That way, you can see which doors actually lead to something, and which ones you should avoid. You can also burn down trap doors if you have the Fire Element; that way you don't confuse them with the real ones later on! Finding Secret Treasure ----------------------- There are many different things you can do in this interactive mansion to find treasure. You can water potted plants, aiming the vacuum upward and shaking the light fixtures, checking objects in the rooms, etc. There are so many things you can do that I can't really list them all right here, but there is much to be found in this game! Hidden Warps ------------ In several rooms, you may notice that there is a mirror there. If you search a mirror with the GameBoy Horror, you'll be warped back to the 1F Foyer. Note that this does not work with the mirrors in the Mirror Room, though. Secret Treasure Rooms --------------------- In the mansion, there are 2 hidden rooms packed with treasure that you can find. Here's their locations: 1. In the Butler's Room, use the GameBoy Horror to find a small mousehole in the wall. Press A and search it to enter a hidden room. 2. On the roof, climb up the east chimmney and drop down into the hidden room. Watering the Boneyard Plant --------------------------- Out in the Boneyard, you'll notice the dirt patch here. Water it with the Water Element (before fighting/defeating Bogmire) until you hear the chime. Come back again to water it a second time before defeating Boolossus, and it'll grow some more. After that, come back before completing the game and water it once more. The plant will grow fully and give you a TON of treasure, including a gold emerald worth 20,000,000 G! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 11.
