Quick Take of Last Action Hero
==============================
This Quick Take was written by Jerry Duffy. (duffy@mik.uky.edu)
Last Action Hero, built by Data East, is certainly a license of some higher
authority.
Last Action Hero is abbreviated "LAH".
=====
Goals
=====
The major goals in LAH are to collect Dynamite Features, (modes) start M-Ball
for Jackpots and Super Jackpots, and begin World Premier. The modes include
such things as Saving little Danny from certain death, find out where Benedict
is hiding, Escape from The Roof, take part in the Ripper's Downtown Blow-Out and
start Super Crane. Hitting the movie screen when M-Ball is ready will start
a 3, 4 or 5 ball many-ball play. Collect the Double Jackpot to start a hectic
6-Ball feature to light and collect Super and Double Super Jackpots.
======
Layout
======
The playfield has two normal size flippers, a set of drop targets along the
left side of the machine, a ramp with an entrance in the back left of the
machine, and three scoops. It has a left and right captive ball, a kickback
in the upper part of the playfield (The Ripper), and a set of triangular
pop bumpers in the upper center of the playfield. The main gimmick of LAH
is a crane set back in the upper left corner which, at certain times will
collect balls and lock them in the 'tar pit' above the Crane Targets.
Unfortunately, the crane is broken the majority of time on most machines,
although this not adversely effect gameplay. The ball is put into play
via an autoplunger in the shape of a pistol. Above the pistol, in a very
hard to reach place, is the Smart Missile button. You get one Smart Missile
per game, and when hit, it will award all currently lit features on the
playfield.
Dynamite Features are a series of modes that are collected at the Movie scoop.
All the modes have intros on what targets to hit or what goal needs to be
accomplished in the dot matrix display. Super Crane is a 6-Ball mode, which
gives a novice a chance to play 6-Ball without having to do good in M-Ball
or collect LAST ACTION HERO from the Dynamite Features. Other Dynamite
Features include a frenzy mode, various "shoot this target X number of times
for X number of millions", and an Add-A-Ball mode, which can be fun to play.
Spelling LAST ACTION HERO on the Dynamite Features starts a 6-Ball mode
that is similiar to other 6-Ball features (Lost in the Zone, System Failure),
except that LAST ACTION HERO will continue as long as you are skillful
enough to score the necessary target hits. A must to go for.
LAH has a nice set of rules, which makes SOMETHING worth shooting for
at all times. There are several different ways to score big, and its
quite reasonable to go for all of them. (Most notably LAST ACTION HERO and
M-Ball.)
Somewhat of a design flaw, LAH has a bad habit of draining quickly down the
right outlane right after a ball is plunged. Fortunatly, the software will
replunge the ball until you get a ball fairly in play.

Sound & Music
=============
Tunes and sound effects are done by Brian Schmidt, who did an excellent job
(as always.) The game is best experienced LOUD with as little surrounding
noise as possible. The music to intro M-Ball is probably my favorite.
