³ A Review of Jean Michel Jarre's Latest Album By S.Smedley (18/11/1991) ³

ÔÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ;
As the end of September 1991 came around so did Jean Michel Jarre with
another new album. This is a compilation of his greatest hits over the 15
years that Jarre has been playing to audiences. There are a few new tracks
on the album and quite a few classics.
We start off with Oxygene IV of which we all know and love. We carry on
through Equinoxe V. Then Magnetic Fields II, but this time round it has been
re-mixed to a more 'up-beat' form. Equinoxe IV has also had this treatment.
Ethnicolor I has also been included on the album but has been reduced in
time quite a lot. From eleven minutes to just under four minutes. Also having
the Ethnicolour track is a surprise as Zoolookologie or Zoolook would probably
gone pretty well on this album. Also placed on the album is the track of
Equinoxe, Band in the rain. Even though it is under one and a half minutes it
is a nice 'go between' for London Kid and Orient Express. Orient Express has
also received the re-mixing. What has been added is an electronic string
section and also the drum beat is heavier. Calypso I and III are also included.
Also Calpyso I has been shortened but it's shorting has led the way for
Calpyso III to just slide in place for the listener. With the best tracks
from Rendezvous and Revolutions. The next track entitled Moon Machine was
made in 1986 with Zoolook for the Lyon concert, but was never released. But
now it is available on this album. The next two tracks are the new tracks.
They are called "ELDORADO" and "GLOBE TROTTER".
Eldorado has a consistent bass line with synthesizers creeping in. Then added
to that is a set of 'angellic' voices. It is pretty repetitive as Waiting for
Costeau was on the so-titled album. Globe Trotter has a Tangerine Dream feel
to it. It is also best left to the listener as to with they like it!
Basically the album is very good. A must for Jarre fanatics! But the only
thing that has spoiled the album for myself is the re-mixing of Orient Express
and Magnetic Fields II. But we all have different tastes. Inside the CD cover
there is a complete list of released material from the 'Master' himself. The
only one not listed is 'Music for Supermarkets', but that was under private
release.
