In which, backed by blaring horns, Elvis takes on New Orleans for the
soundtrack to his fourth film. The arrangements work great on the
uptempo numbers: "Hard Headed Woman" and "Trouble" are classics,
"Dixieland Rock" and "New Orleans" should be, "Crawfish" is unlike
anything Elvis would ever record again, and "King Creole" is probably
the best title tune for a movie Elvis ever got. Had a couple more
rockers been included, this could be more highly recommended. ~ Neal

The most convincing dramatic role in Presley's long (and frequently
undistinguished) film career, this 1958 black & white epic boasts one
of the best casts (Walter Matthau and Vic Morrow costar) and some of
the hottest tunes, rendered with a touch of New Orleans jazz. Tunes
include "Trouble," "Dixieland Rock," "New Orleans," and the title cut.

If you're only going to have one Elvis collection, this is the one to
get. It is without a doubt the finest release RCA has ever put
together. With this set, you get the master take of EVERY song Elvis
recorded between 1953-59, and the sound quality will bring tears to
your eyes. This amounts to a whopping 140 tracks, including 14
previously unissued cuts.
Both sides of the acetate Elvis recorded at Sun Studios in 1953 are
here. "My Happiness" was first issued two years ago, but "That's When
Your Heartaches Begin" appears for the first time and reveals the
difficulty Elvis had with slow songs. It breaks down abruptly when he
realizes how feeble his handling of the spoken bridge was. The 1954
take of "Tomorrow Night" includes an instrumental break that was
edited out of previously issued versions, and a previously unissued
alternate take of "Blue Moon" is also included. The most exciting find
on the set is the first release of a long-rumored pair of acetates
recorded by Elvis, Scotty Moore, and Bill Black in Lubbock, Texas in
1955. One is an early tongue-in-cheek version of "Shake, Rattle and
Roll" and the other is a fine blues number, "Fool, Fool, Fool."
There's even a version of "Reconsider Baby" that was somehow left off
the MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET album. A hard-edged alternate of "Lawdy
Miss Clawdy" easily outdistances the master and an alternate of the
later version of "Shake, Rattle and Roll" features a piano solo and
some off-color verses that were lopped off of the official release.
Live versions of "Tweedle Dee" and "Maybellene" from the Louisiana
Hayride are included as well as four cuts from Elvis' dismal 1956 Las
Vegas engagement. Along with the previously unissued cuts are Elvis
classics such as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender," "Hound Dog,"
"Don't Be Cruel," "Rip It Up," "Jailhouse Rock," "All Shook Up," and
"Mystery Train." This five-CD box set comes with a 92-page book with
biographical notes by Peter Guralnick. Stuffed with rare photos and
record sleeves, the book also includes a discography and the most
detailed session information I have ever seen. A set of 36 color
stamps are tossed in as a bonus. When I forget about the parasitic
nonsense of the world's obsession with Elvis and just listen to the
music, it confirms my love and admiration for the man and my undying
gratitude for the strength and validity of his achievement. Long live
rock 'n' roll! ~ Jim Whalen, Roundup Newsletter
Boxed five CD set that contains every studio recording Elvis made from
1954-58 in chronological order on the first four discs; the fifth is a
collection of outtakes and alternates. The sound is the best we have
heard on CD by Elvis with virtually every track taken from an original
tape of a first generation safety copy. Great booklet with more note
from Peter Guralnick. ABSOLUTELY the single finest package RCA of
America has ever released on Elvis Aaron Presley and indispensable to
any collection that pretends to deal with American music. ~ Neal
Umphred
The five CDs in this set contain 140 performances recorded by Presley
in the 50s, including 14 tracks released here for the first time.
Extensive documentation comes with the set, including a discography
and many rare photos, plus a 50s sessionography. Peter Guralnick wrote
the notes. ~ All-Music Guide
A casual Elvis fan wanting to assemble a decent overview of the King's
50s sides could probably sweat it down to the SUN SESSIONS CD and
Volume 1 of the TOP TEN HITS compilation. But for those of you who
take your 50s Presley seriously, THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL - THE
COMPLETE 50S' MASTERS is absolutely essential. For the hardcore Elvis
fan, the booklet and CD graphics for this five-disc set provide
incentive enough to justify its purchase. The liner notes by Presley
expert Peter Guralnick are passionate, contagious in their enthusiasm,
and filled with a real sense of history, time, and place. The
treasure-trove of unpublished photos, session information and Elvis
memorabilia accompanying the booklet text is no less inspiring. But
it's the music (140 tracks in all) that's the real meat and potatoes
of this set. Every studio track cut during the 50s -- the seminal Sun
sides, the early RCA hits, movie soundtracks, alternates, live
performances, rarities (including both sides of the long-lost acetate
he cut for his mother back in 1953) -- it's all here in one gorgeous
package. Soundwise, this box makes any of the previous issues of this
material pale by comparison, the proper (non-reverbed) inclusion of
the Sun masters being a particular treat. This is no mere rehash of
what's been around a dozen times before -- there's a lot of thought
and care behind this package, and no serious fan of American rock &
roll should consider a collection complete without it. ~ Cub Koda

In May of 1963, Elvis Presley took a break from making movies and
recording soundtracks to tape 15 songs to be used by RCA as filler. In
typical fashion, the songs were ladled out over the next three years
as B-sides and bonus songs on soundtracks. THE LOST ALBUM is not
nearly as lame as you'd expect. There are a number of good cuts here,
like the Doc Pomus/Mort Schuman composition, "Long Lonely Highway," as
well as some minor hits like "Devil in Disguise" and "Witchcraft."
Pick of the litter is a hard-rocking version of Chuck Berry's
"Memphis, Tennessee." Not really a "lost" album but a fairly
interesting collection nonetheless. ~ Jim Whalen, Roundup Newsletter
THE LOST ALBUM consists of tracks recorded in May 1963 and January
1964 in Nashville. The initial sessions provided RCA with enough
material to issue Elvis" fifth studio album of the 60s, a likely
successor to the preceding pair, SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY and POT LUCK.
That is, a rather modest collection of rockers, ballads and a lil' ol'
country. There are some strong numbers, especially the ones that ended
up on singles: "(You're The) Devil in Disguise," "Please Don't Drag
That String Around," and "Witchcraft." The January session produced
what many consider one of Elvis' finest moments as a ballad singer,
"It Hurts Me," which was, all too typically by then, relegated to the
B-side of an abysmal soundtrack song as a summer single. THE LOST
ALBUM collects them all in one place with fine sound and is a lot of
fun, if of little significance. ~ Neal Umphred

Purporting to be the soundtrack to Elvis's second film, this album
collects songs used in the film on one side with new material on the
other. The weakness of a couple of the movie tunes and the fact that
the new songs were leftovers from the sessions used to produce Elvis'
first gospel EP and latest single add up to his weakest album
offering, although any album with "Got a Lot O' Living to Do," is
alright. ~ Neal Umphred

Shot in 1957 in blazing Technicolor, Elvis Presley's second starring
