This double album set is less than the sum of its parts. The
motivation behind the album is confusing: It leaves some strong stuff
off ("A Little it of Green" and "From a Jack to a King") in favor of a
number of obviously weaker recordings. In fact, the major complaint
might be that the two albums include too much material; that the
lesser material undermines the strength of the good stuff. And why
have certain tracks, such as "I'll Be There" and "If I'm a Fool" been
all but ignored over the years? A three record set would have allowed
room for everything Elvis recorded during these sessions, thereby
making historical sense out of the album. The packaging an interesting
but ugly attempt to make the fold open jacket resemble a newspaper
("The Memphis Record"), the liner notes by Peter Guralnick are
excellent. Plus the musicians are credited! ~ Neal Umphred
Coming hot off the heels of his breakthrough NBC special in 1968,
Presley returned to Memphis to record for the first time in 12 years
and laid down 20 tracks in the space of four days. He was hot, he was
inspired, and it's all here. ~ Cub Koda

A classic. An impromptu studio session at Sun with a very young Jerry
Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. ~ Hank Davis
For years available only as a poor-fidelity bootleg, this is Elvis
jamming in the Sun studios with Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and
others on a set of primarily gospel and hillbilly material. Loose as a
goose, with a true jam-session spirit to it, it offers a fascinating
glimpse of one of the few times Presley let his true musical soul come
up for air with somebody (Sam Phillips) there to record it. ~ Cub Koda

For some reason, this album was selling briskly on release, heading
for the most respectable sales an Elvis album had had in years.
Then... This is not one his best, combining a few recently recorded
tracks (October, back in his home studios), with leftovers from the
February sessions, and a couple of live tracks, one of which had
previously been released on the already deleted RECORDED LIVE ON STAGE
IN MEMPHIS. The first 250,000 copies were pressed on blue vinyl. All
subsequent pressings were due to be on black. When the news of Elvis"
passing reached RCA, they switched back to blue. The few copies of
AFL1-2428 on black vinyl are worth $200. ~ Neal Umphred

After years of making abysmal movies, Presley appeared before a live
audience, scared to death. That he more than rose to the challenge is
evidenced here, a masterly performance highlighted by the jam-session
segment with DJ Fontana and Scotty Moore, where Presley plays electric
guitar and knocks out drop-dead versions of "Baby, What You Want Me to
Do" and "Tiger Man." ~ Cub Koda

NUMBER ONE HITS contains 18 #1 records from the charts of BILLBOARD,
who somehow didn't rank "Crying in the Chapel," "In the Ghetto,"
"Burning Love," and "Way Down" as chart-toppers, although other
national surveys did. In fact, according to RCA, every copy of "Way
Down" was sold out within days after Presley's death, not just here
but all over the planet, and somehow, amazingly, it didn't even make
the magazine's Top Ten! ~ Neal Umphred

ON STAGE - FEBRUARY 1970, is a bit more tame than ELVIS IN PERSON but
provides Elvis with a chance to cover a number of then contemporary
hits, which he carries with aplomb. Actually, two numbers, "Yesterday"
and "Runaway" were recorded for the previous album in August past, so
the title is only 80% accurate. As for the live albums that were to
follow... Well, you had to have been there. ~ Neal Umphred

Following the success of the first four record volume, the
powers-that-be opted for a second four LP box and collected
million-selling B-sides, EPs that most assuredly had topped the seven
digit figure but were routinely ignored by such collections, and
A-sides that had recently gone gold or, ahem, were close... And it
works! As a representation of Elvis, this package may be the superior
of the first. The big problem is the scatter-shot programming of the
tunes. Had this been laid out chronologically like the first, it would
have been a perfect companion to VOLUME 1 and made aesthetic and
historic sense! Still, material-wise, it is excellent. ~ Neal Umphred

This album continued the decline begun with SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY:
While there are several excellent, continually under-rated tracks
("Gonna Get Back Home Somehow," "Night Rider," "(Such An) Easy
Question" and, of course, "Suspicion"), this album sounds like a
collection of filler, the ballads especially tending towards the
lugubrious. A good if unexceptional album. ~ Neal Umphred

In July 1973 Elvis returned to Memphis, this time to the justly famed
source of Southern soul, Stax Studios. After a couple of days, several
of Stax's most famous musicians came in, including the marvelous
rhythm section of Donald "Duck" Dunn, bass, and Al Jackson, drums.
Apparently, the very idea of working with Elvis was intimidating and
the group couldn't overcome their awe (I know, this sounds a bit, er,
fantastic...) so that Elvis had to leave the building. In his absence,
rhythm tracks were laid down. He then returned to add his vocals, a
practice only used during the last few years of the soundtracks, when
he was too bored to show up and work. From all of this five songs were
attempted, one completed, and it's instantly forgettable. Elvis
returned in December to Stax and with a mix of his band and some
Nashville cats, recording eighteen tracks in a week. In between, he
had tried a session at his Palm Springs home that didn't work,
although three almost ponderously sincere ballads were completed. All
in all, RCA had thirty new Elvis songs, enough quality material for
two strong albums of twelve tracks each, which would have restored
Presley in the sight of critics and record reviewers and, hopefully,
the increasingly apathetic consumer. Unfortunately, the material was
issued as three cheesily packaged albums of a mere ten track each.
RAISED ON ROCK, GOOD TIMES and PROMISED LAND all have something to
offer: "I've Got a Thing About You, Baby" is RAISED ON ROCKS"
standout; "Loving Arms" is GOOD TIMES"; while the roaring "Promised
Land" kicks off the album of the same name. But the lesser material
dilutes the impact of the strong, the sound ranges from okay to
atrocious, thus producing more evidence of Presley's growing
mediocrity. ~ Neal Umphred

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
For some reason, this album was selling briskly on release, heading
for the most respectable sales an Elvis album had had in years.
